'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir)
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Glasgow School of Art: RADAR 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir) David Sweeney During the Britpop era of the 1990s, the name of Mike Leigh was invoked regularly both by musicians and the journalists who wrote about them. To compare a band or a record to Mike Leigh was to use a form of cultural shorthand that established a shared aesthetic between musician and filmmaker. Often this aesthetic similarity went undiscussed beyond a vague acknowledgement that both parties were interested in 'real life' rather than the escapist fantasies usually associated with popular entertainment. This focus on 'real life' involved exposing the ugly truth of British existence concealed behind drawing room curtains and beneath prim good manners, its 'secrets and lies' as Leigh would later title one of his films. I know this because I was there. Here's how I remember it all: Jarvis Cocker and Abigail's Party To achieve this exposure, both Leigh and the Britpop bands he influenced used a form of 'real world' observation that some critics found intrusive to the extent of voyeurism, particularly when their gaze was directed, as it so often was, at the working class. Jarvis Cocker, lead singer and lyricist of the band Pulp -exemplars, along with Suede and Blur, of Leigh-esque Britpop - described the band's biggest hit, and one of the definitive Britpop songs, 'Common People', as dealing with "a certain voyeurism on the part of the middle classes, a certain romanticism of working class culture and a desire to slum it a bit". -
An Ideological Analysis of the Birth of Chinese Indie Music
REPHRASING MAINSTREAM AND ALTERNATIVES: AN IDEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE BIRTH OF CHINESE INDIE MUSIC Menghan Liu A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill Esther Clinton © 2012 MENGHAN LIU All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis project focuses on the birth and dissemination of Chinese indie music. Who produces indie? What is the ideology behind it? How can they realize their idealistic goals? Who participates in the indie community? What are the relationships among mainstream popular music, rock music and indie music? In this thesis, I study the production, circulation, and reception of Chinese indie music, with special attention paid to class, aesthetics, and the influence of the internet and globalization. Borrowing Stuart Hall’s theory of encoding/decoding, I propose that Chinese indie music production encodes ideologies into music. Pierre Bourdieu has noted that an individual’s preference, namely, tastes, corresponds to the individual’s profession, his/her highest educational degree, and his/her father’s profession. Whether indie audiences are able to decode the ideology correctly and how they decode it can be analyzed through Bourdieu’s taste and distinction theory, especially because Chinese indie music fans tend to come from a community of very distinctive, 20-to-30-year-old petite-bourgeois city dwellers. Overall, the thesis aims to illustrate how indie exists in between the incompatible poles of mainstream Chinese popular music and Chinese rock music, rephrasing mainstream and alternatives by mixing them in itself. -

Suede Tickets for 2011 London Residency on Sale Now at Getmein.Com Submitted By: Propellernet Friday, 28 January 2011
Suede Tickets for 2011 London Residency on Sale Now at GetMeIn.com Submitted by: Propellernet Friday, 28 January 2011 Fresh from their glorious December show at London’s The O2 Arena, Britpop pioneers Suede continue their comeback with a 3-night residency at the O2 Brixton Academy in London on 19th, 20th and 21st May, with tickets available for fans through Ticketmaster’s GET ME IN! ticket marketplace. Fronted by Brett Anderson with Richard Oakes, Simon Gilbert, Neil Codling and Matt Osman, Suede dedicate each night to one of their influential first 3 albums; 1993’s eponymous titled debut “Suede,” 1994’s majestic “Dog Man Star” and the chart-storming Britpop classic, “Coming Up.” Each night the band will play an album in its entirety, including single b-sides from each era. Suede arrived in 1992 when US Grunge bands dominated the airwaves. The band’s unmistakably British style quickly found new fans and with a little help from the NME, Suede were set for stardom. Their self-titled debut “Suede” was winning blend of classic British songwriting in the vein of The Smiths with influences of Marc Bolan/T Rex and Ziggy-era Bowie. The ambitious follow-up, “Dog Man Star” failed to match sales of the debut but has since been widely regarded as a pop masterpiece. Differences between the band and guitarist and founding member, Bernard Butler led to an acrimonious split. Many believed Butler’s departure would signal the end for Suede, but like Phoenix, Suede re-emerged with new members. Then 16-years old guitar prodigy, Richard Oakes and multi-instrumentalist, Neil Codling helped Suede achieve their biggest hit to date. -
