Pre-Publication Draft The Early History of Medical Genetics in Canada Abstract: This article shows that the intellectual and specialist movements that supported the growth of medical genetics in Canada between 1947 and 1990 were emergent phenomena, created, split, and reattached to different groups of actors, and reconfigured numerous times over the course of four decades. In each instance, new kinds of working relationships appeared; sets of diverse actors in local university- hospital settings coalesced into a new collectivity; and, as a collectivity, actors defined and/or redefined occupational roles and work rules. In its beginnings, medical genetics appears to be the object of a serious institutional manoeuver: a movement in support of the creation of examining and teaching positions in human genetics in North American medical schools. With time, the institutionalization of ‘medical genetics’ took hold, spurred on by changes in the rate and direction of service delivery associated with genetic consultation and laboratory services in clinical settings. -

Without the work of these pioneering scientists, Watson and Crick may never have made their ground-breaking double helix model, published in 1953. The knowledge of how genetic material is stored and copied in this molecule gave rise to a new way of looking at and manipulating biological processes, called molecular biology. By studying the common garden pea plant, Mendel demonstrated the inheritance of “discrete units” and introduced the idea that the inheritance of these units from generation to generation follows particular patterns. It is the reason why offspring look like their parents. It also explains why cats always give birth to kittens and never puppies. The process of heredity occurs among all living organisms, including animals, plants, bacteria, protists and fungi. Genetic variation refers to the variation in a population or species. Genetics is the study of heredity and variation in living organisms. Two research approaches were historically important in helping investigators understand the biological basis of heredity. The first of these approaches, ‘transmission genetics’, involved crossing organisms and studying the offsprings' traits to develop hypotheses about the mechanisms of inheritance. The second approach involved using cytological techniques to study the machinery and processes of cellular reproduction. This approach laid a solid foundation for the more conceptual understanding of inheritance that developed as a result of transmission genetics. Ever since 1970s, with the advent of molecular tools and techniques, geneticists are able to intensively analyze genetic basis of trait variation in various organisms, including plants, animals and humans. -

Animal Traditions: Behavioural Inheritance in Evolution Eytan Avital and Eva Jablonka CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS Animal Traditions Behavioural Inheritance in Evolution Animal Traditions maintains that the assumption that the selection of genes supplies both a sufficient explanation of the evolution of behav- iour and a true description of its course is, despite its almost univer- sal acclaim, wrong. Eytan Avital and Eva Jablonka contend that evolutionary explanations must take into account the well-established fact that, in mammals and birds, the transfer of learnt information across generations is both ubiquitous and indispensable. The introduc- tion of the behavioural inheritance system into the Darwinian explanatory scheme enables the authors to offer new interpretations for common behaviours such as maternal behaviours, behavioural conflicts within families, adoption and helping. This approach offers a richer view of heredity and evolution, integrates developmental and evolutionary processes, suggests new lines for research and provides a constructive alternative to both the selfish gene and meme views of the world. It will make stimulating reading for all those interested in evolutionary biology, sociobiology, behavioural ecology and psychology. eytan avital is a lecturer in Zoology in the Department of Natural Sciences at David Yellin College of Education in Jerusalem. 1 Genome as a multipurpose structure built by evolution Michel Morange, Centre Cavaillès, République des savoirs USR 3608, Ecole normale supérieure, 29 rue d’Ulm, 75230 Paris Cedex05, France Email: [email protected] Abstract The publication in 2012 of the results of the ENCODE program generated an acrimonious debate about the role of junk DNA. This debate is a symptom of the difficulties of dovetailing functional and evolutionary descriptions of genomes. My argument is that extant genomes are the result of a progressive evolutionary construction. To the basic function – to give rise to RNA and proteins – have been successively added other functions – regulation by microRNA and epigenetic marks, for instance. This process of complexification was not a regular one, but the result of a complex evolutionary history, different for the different genomes. Better knowledge of the evolutionary history of genomes would help to understand these structures and their functions. Historians and philosophers of biology have amply discussed the difficulty, even the impossibility, of providing a precise definition of a gene (Beurton et al. 2000). The genome no longer appears as a collection of similar genes, but as a multitasking structure formed of different types of genetic elements (Gingeras 2006). Participants in these debates nonetheless often agree on one issue, that the genome is (and has to be) something well defined: a collection of genes, a 2 reservoir of junk DNA, or a structure filled with regulatory sequences. My point of view will be different: the genome is what evolution has progressively made of it. This vision has three important consequences.
