    journal of jesuit studies 4 (2017) 599-623 brill.com/jjs Jesuit Catechisms for Soldiers (Seventeenth– Nineteenth Centuries): Changes and Continuities Vincenzo Lavenia Università di Macerata, Italy [email protected] Abstract This paper proposes a literary journey through the manuals for soldiers written by Jesuits prior to the twentieth century. After briefly outlining the debut of these publications, at the hands of Antonio Possevino and of Thomas Sailly, who led the first permanent mission of military chaplains in Flanders, it will focus on three mo- ments: the second half of the seventeenth century, when the wars of religion wound down and we find the first manuals where, alongside the desire to impose discipline on armies, a patriotic rhetoric begins to be heard; the middle years of the eighteenth century, before the French Revolution, when, after the establishment of barracks and permanent chaplaincies, even texts aimed at the Christian soldier transposed the vocabulary of the Droit des gens in; finally, the nineteenth century, when the Society was restored and undertook the religious conversion of the soldiery against the perils of the modern world. In Belgium, the birth of a liberal Catholic regime supported a patriotically-toned missionary effort from Jesuit chaplains. Later, the mystique of the nation would affect the majority of texts aimed at combatants and their chaplains during the Great War. Catechists work for their students to learn different forms of prayer with the goal of inspiring the children to incorporate prayer into their daily lives. Additionally, catechists work with the students to help them memorize the more formal prayers of the Church. A list of prayers to be learned per grade level can be found below. Families are encouraged to help their children learn the specific prayers for their grade level, but also to review the other prayers on this list together as a family. I chose California so I could be close to my brothers and sisters and their families. Last year when Parveen left for Fiji in October for two months, I spent that time in Sacramento, California, and during that time I was successful in purchasing a three-bedroom single family home. On the morning of Saturday 1 May we left Chicago to travel by road on a 2100-mile journey to our destination in California. My son Rizwan drove the U-Haul truck with our belongings; Parveen and I accompanied him. Our motor vehicle was hitched to the back of the U-Haul truck. It seems that the prayers of Hazrat Ameer, Dr. Abdul Karim Saeed Pasha Sahib, and Jama‘at members worldwide worked. In Iowa we were within a mile of running out of fuel when we located a gas station, and again on the first day when we broke our journey at 9 p.m. between Omaha and Jackson City in Nebraska, we pulled into a Super Motel 8 where parking was available for large trucks. To our delight there was only one room available with two beds; Rizwan took one bed and Parveen and I shared the other.

He studied in Syria and Egypt specialising in Arabic language, hadith, sharfah, and psychology. He had many prominent teachers, among them Shaykh Raghib al-Tabbakh, Shaykh Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Zaraqa, Shaykh cIsa al-Bayanunl, Shaykh Ahmad al-Kurdl, and the renowned Ottoman Scholar Imam al-Kawthari. He taught usul al-fiqh, HanafI fiqh and Comparative fiqh at the University o f Damascus. He also taught at the King Saud University and Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University. He was buried in al-Baql’ cemetery in Madinah 1997. q^p FOREWORD Shaykh cAbd al-Fattah Abu Ghuddah (1917-1997), the author of the present work, was one of the leading scholars of the 20th cen­ tury, especially in the field of hadith and the sciences related to hadith. He was taught by over 200 scholars, drawn from the fields o f hadith, fiqh, and other Islamic disciplines. This thesis provides a detailed consideration of the ways in which the Pater Noster was taught to the laity in medieval England. It explores the central position of the prayer in the lay curriculum, the constitutions which played a fundamental role in its teaching, and the methods by which it was disseminated. Clerical expositions of the prayer and its tabular and diagrammatic representations are examined to consider the material available to assist the clergy in their pedagogical role. The ways in which material associated with the Pater Noster was modified and delivered to a lay audience provides an important component in the holistic approach of this thesis.
