The Early Abolitionists of Lancaster County, In giving a history of the Abolition movement in Lancaster county,or else- where, the question seems first to arise, what is specially meant by the term "Abolitionist." The indiscrimin- ate manner in which it was used sixty years ago against every person who in any manner sympathized with the anti- slavery movement leaves me some- what in doubt as to what phase of the subject I am supposed to treat, In fact, I am reminded very much of a speech I heard made by Thaddeus Ste- vens when yet a small boy. It was in the Congressional campaign of 1858, when Mr. Stevens was a candidate for Congress from this district. The per- oration of his speech was substantially as follows. I quote from memory: "But in answer to all this I hear one reply, namely, Stevens is an Abolition- ist. The indiscriminate manner with which the term is used, I am frank to confess, leaves me somewhat in doubt as to what is meant by it. But the venom and spleen with which it is hurled at some of us would indicate, at least, that it is a term of reproach and used only against monsters and outlaws of society. If it is meant by an Abolitionist that I am one of those terrible, heinous-looking animals with cloven hoofs and horns, such as is de- scribed in. legend and fiction, and in Milton's "Paradise Lost," I am not very handsome, to be sure, but I don't think I am one of those. -

The first goal of the course is to make students aware of research on long-term factors in the development of the American economy that are overlooked in the contemporary focus of other courses—the rise of institutions, the appearance of markets for labor and capital, the growth and health of the population, the development of new technologies, the distribution of income and wealth, and the changing role of the government in the economy. The second goal is to familiarize students with the methods and materials of economic history. The course will require extensive input from the students, as the latter goal cannot be achieved without considerable hands-on experience. Great emphasis will be placed on students’ participation in discussions and students’ demonstration of the mastery of the tools of economic history in evaluating the materials presented in class and in completing a significant piece of original research using primary materials. PREREQUISITES: 410, 411, and 480. TEACHING METHOD: Two seminars per week. EVALUATION: Participation in discussions (20%), four short (6-8 page) papers (40%), and a final paper (40%). This era was significant to both Russia and the United States because each country experienced tremendous reforms including the abolitions of their unfree labor institutions. Generally, Northern Americans viewed serfdom as a milder form of forced labor and suspected that it would be eradicated soon. Abolitionists used rumors of Russian emancipation to advocate for the end of American slavery. -

In contrast to previous studies of the region’s growth that relied heavily on the performance of the export sector, the conjectural method enables us to take into account the impact of domestic sector, in particular the production of agricultural products for the domestic market. -

Agriculture and Slavery: a Context for Prince George's County, Maryland
Agriculture and Slavery: A Context for Prince George’s County, Maryland ounded in 1696, Prince George’s County has a rich history marked by distinct economic, social, and cultural developments through Ftime. From the arrival of the first European settlers until the era of suburbanization in the mid-twentieth century, nearly every aspect of life in Prince George’s County has been affected or influenced by three major themes: agriculture, labor, and wealth. An understanding of these factors, and their historical relationship to one another, is essential to an understanding of life in modern Prince George’s County. The first European settlers arrived in Prince George’s County sometime during the mid- to late-seventeenth century and for the next 300 years the county retained an agricultural nature. Historically, agriculture in the Chesapeake Bay region centered on one cash crop, tobacco. Prince George’s County proved no exception. Although by no means the only crop cultivated in the county, economically tobacco was the most significant. For most of the period discussed in this context slaves were the backbone of the agricultural labor force. Although a system of white indenture preceded the widespread use of slave labor, by the time of the founding of the county, planters had already begun the transition and quickly black slaves all but replaced white indentured servants. In many regards, the final theme, that of wealth, represented success in agriculture and the maintenance of a labor force. More specifically, the ability to accumulate wealth rested in the ability of a plantation’s slaves to produce tobacco. -

Henkin Professor Eric Schickler Fall 2010 Building an Antislavery House: Political Abolitionists and the U.S. Congress © 2010 By Corey Michael Brooks 1 Abstract Building an Antislavery House: Political Abolitionists and the U.S. Congress by Corey Michael Brooks Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Robin L. Einhorn, Chair This dissertation reintegrates abolitionism into the main currents of U.S. political history. Because of a bifurcation between studies of the American antislavery movement and political histories of the sectional conflict, modern scholars have drastically underestimated the significance of abolitionist political activism. Historians often characterize political abolitionists as naïve idealists or separatist moral purists, but I recast them as practical, effective politicians, who capitalized on rare openings in American political institutions to achieve outsized influence in the face of a robust two-party system. Third-party abolitionists shaped national debate far beyond their numbers and played central roles in the emergence of the Republican Party. Over the second half of the 1830s, political abolitionists devised the Slave Power concept, claiming that slaveholder control of the federal government endangered American democracy; this would later become the Republicans‘ most important appeal. Integrating this argument with an institutional analysis of the Second Party System, antislavery activists assailed the Whigs and Democrats—cross-sectional parties that incorporated antislavery voices while supporting proslavery policies—as beholden to the Slave Power. -
