Shaantakara Meaning of the Shloka Lord Vishnu Who Is Ever Peaceful Shaantakara Meaning of the shloka Lord Vishnu who is ever peaceful, who lies on the Great Serpent bed, from whose navel springs the lotus of the creative power who is the controller of Gods, whose form is the entire universe, who is all-pervading as the sky, of the hue of the clouds, of fascinating beauty, the Lord of Lakshmi, The Lotus Eyed, He who dwells in the heart of the yogis and who can be approached and perceived through meditation. He who is the destroyer of fear of samsar, we bow down to the Master of the universe. Shantaakaram ‘Shantam’ means equanimity , unruffledness. The countenance of the Lord depicts inner calm, happiness, balance, inner grace and mercy, the consciousness of strength and sovereignity - the very pictureof peaceful calm. ( All the deities exhibit their Bhava on their face and in their stance.) Bhujagashayanam The lord is the very embodiment of peaceful calm , though reclining on a thousand hooded snake. The snake is the symbol of the objective world, with its poisonous fangs. Being in the world but not of it, not bound by it – that is the secret. Immanent in the universe , yrt transcending it. The ocean on which He reclines is symbolic of the Bhavasagar. ( SSS V/p 224 ) Padmanabham This refers to the lotus arising out of the navel of the Lord. Brahma is depicted as seated on the lotus. Brahma stands for creation. The lotus stalk represents the umbilical cord. Just as the child draws sustenance from the mother through the umbilical cord, the creation draws sustenance from the Lord, who is the Viswadharam or the basis of the universe. Gaganasadrisham The Lord is like the sky, sarva vyapi, pervades everything. He is at all times, everywhere, besides His children. He is in the most distant star as well as in the blade of grass. He is the core of everything, as butter in every drop of milk. A person who realises this becomes fearless. Therefore the Lord is called Bhavabhayaharam. Despair is sin against God. When He is in your heart, why do you lose hope? That is why The Lord says, “ When I am here, Why do you fear?” Be always joyful, optimistic and courageius – Baba Meghavarnam The dark colour of the Lord is the colour of the deep sea and the vast sky. It signifies the fathomless, unfathomable. His secret is beyond us, (SSS IV/p.168). However long you try, whosoever seeks to know by whatever means, you cannot grasp the mystery of My Majesty. Only intense study with Sri Sathya Sai Balvikas, Tamilnadu www.sssbalvikastn.org faith of the scriptures can help you catch a glimpse of my glory. ”Yogihridyanagamyam” Shubaangam His for is full of loveliness and charm which radiates auspiciousness everywhere. ( SSS V/p.329) Lakshmikaantham He is the source of wealth. He is the universal provider. Lakshmi means 1. The five elements that sustain life – Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. 2. The wealth of sound indriyas and good health 3. The wealth of virtues. The Lord is the Master of the five elements. He is the source of all virtues. He is the provider of sound body, mind and buddhi. Kamalanayanam The Lord is like the lotus, unaffected by the environment where He is. That is th reason why His eyes and His feet are compared to the lotus. ( SSS V/p.73) Sarvalokaikanatham Sustainer of the universe. Shaantakaram Bhujagasayanam The Paramathma is present in the minutest particle; Being in everything; that remains unaffected. Gaganasadhrisham That universal consciousness ( Vishnu) pervades everything in creation. Shubaangam He is purer than the whitest snow. Lakshmikantham Sarvalokaikanatham That universal consciousness illuminates and sustains the three worlds. Story related to the stotra Lord Vishnu is described as Shaantakaram, always peaceful and steady minded. Once sage kashyapa was celebrating a Yajna and all the sages had gathered to witness the same. Now there arose a doubt in their mind as to who was the highest of all divinities. Sage Narada replied that the Trinity – Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara were the highest of all but Lord Vishnu was the Sri Sathya Sai Balvikas, Tamilnadu www.sssbalvikastn.org Supreme. He was never didturbed by either praise or a blame. He was ever peaceful and in bliss. The sages asked Narada to prove it. Narada called sage Brighu aside , whispered something in his ear. Brighu was sent to verify Narada’s statement. He first went to Brahmaloka. He saw that Lord Brahma was busy in his act of Creation. From afar, Brighu started condemning Lord Brahma. He said” Oh! Brahma, you don’t have the proper knowledge of Creation. Your Creation is full of defects and faults! Therefore all your efforts are in vain. Not a single thing in your creation is worth praising!” Lord Brahma was annoyed to hear these words. He got up from his seat and came forward to punish Brighu. But the sage ran away from Brahmaloka. Then Brighu went to Shivaloka. H saw Lord Shiva engaged in Thandava Nrithya. From a distance Brighu began to criticise Lord Shiva. He said “ Oh Lord! You are not looking after your department properly at all. Your task is to destruy the evil of the world. But the world today is full of evil. You are busy dancing the whole day and not performing the task allotted to you., why should we worship you then?” Lord Shiva was angry to hear this andHe was about to open His third eye to burn the sage, but the sage ran away from there. Then he went to Vaikuntha. He saw Lord Vishnu resting upon the sesha. He got very angry seering that Lord was not coming for His devotees but seemed to be engaged in self enjoyment. He went near Lord Vishnu and kicked hard upon his chest. Then Brighu was afraid of the consequences and was about to run away. But to his surprise he saw Lord Vishnu getting up from His seat and falling at his feet. The Lord said “ Oh sage! Please forgive me for not noticing you and ignoring you , thereby causing anger to rise in you. My iron-like chest may have injured your foot. Let me press it and comfort you.” What a great tolerance! What a peaceful state! Brighu was taken aback to hear these words and asjked the Lord to forgive him. Then the sage came back to the council of the sages at the yajna and narrated the whole story. Hearing it, all the sages beleived that Lord Vishnu alone was Shaantakaram and their doubt was cleared. Cohn Pennsylvania State University Villanova, PA, USA Associate Editor Clair Linzey Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics Oxford, UK In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the ethics of our treatment of animals. Philosophers have led the way, and now a range of other scholars have followed from historians to social scientists. From being a marginal issue, animals have become an emerging issue in ethics and in multidisciplinary inquiry. Tis series will explore the challenges that Animal Ethics poses, both conceptually and practically, to traditional understandings of human-animal relations. Specifcally, the Series will: • provide a range of key introductory and advanced texts that map out ethical positions on animals • publish pioneering work written by new, as well as accomplished, scholars; • produce texts from a variety of disciplines that are multidisciplinary in character or have multidisciplinary relevance. • Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba
Om Sri Sai Ram BHAGAVAT GITA VAHINI By Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba Greetings Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba is the Sanathana Sarathi, the timeless charioteer, who communicated the Geetha Sastra to Adithya and helped Manu and king Ikshwaku to know it; He was the charioteer of Arjuna during the great battle between good and evil fought out at Kurukshetra. When the rider, Arjuna, was overcome with grief at the prospect of the fight, Krishna instructed him in the science of recognising one's oneness with all, and removed the grief and the fear. He is the charioteer even now, for every one of us; let me greet you as a fellow-sufferer and a fellow-disciple. We have but to recognise Him and accept Him in that role, holding the reins of discrimination and flourishing the whip of detachment, to direct the horses of the senses along the path of Sathya, asphalted by Dharma and illumined by Prema towards the goal of Shanthi. Arjuna accepted Him in that role; let us do likewise. When worldly attachment hinders the path of duty, when ambition blinds the eyes of sympathy, when hate shuts out the call of love, let us listen to the Geetha. He teaches us from the chariot whereon He is installed. Then He showers His grace, His vision and His power, and we are made heroes fit to fight and win. This precious book is not a commentary or summary of the Geetha that was taught on the field of Kurukshetra. We need not learn any new language or read any old text to imbibe the lesson that the Lord is eager to teach us now, for victory in the battle we are now waging.

  • “Lord Brahma” By: Kaasinath Balagurunath
“Lord Brahma” By: Kaasinath Balagurunath The Hindu religion has many marvellous gods with many wonderful abilities. For me however, Lord Brahma stands out of the rest. And if someone were to ask me what god I would like to emulate the most, I wouldn’t think for a moment, and say, “The god is Lord Brahma, because he is the god of creation, he is the only god with no weapons in the Hindu Religion and he usually wears red, and he gets to write the destiny of all of his own creations, and he has 4 heads and multiple arms”. The word “Brahma” derived from the Sanskrit word “Brahman” which means “The Creator”. Brahma is the Father of Truth. I like the fact that he is the creator because I have always been intrigued in creating my own “imaginary animals” with their own special attributes, and purposes that would one day be a part of life in an ecosystem. Additionally it would be a puzzle to create the correct balance of Creatures so that one species doesn’t dominate the rest (Except Humans). Also it would be gratifying to me that I was the creator of these wonderful animals all thought up by me. It would almost be like playing a game! As you can see, one significant reason why I like Lord Brahma is because he is the Creator. Besides the fact that he creates life, I like that he carries no weapons and that he wears red. I think that having no weapons is a sign of self-confidence.

The Aryans are the oldest race on earth and the most * advanced and the is their first ; Ramayana and grandest epic. The Eddas of Scandinavia, the Niebelungen Lied of Germany, the Iliad of Homer, the Enead of Virgil, the Inferno, the Purgatorio, and the Paradiso of Dante, the Paradise Lost of Milton, the Lusiad of Camcens, the Shah Nama of Firdausi are and no more the Epics ; Ramayana of Valmeeki is an Epic and much more. Professor MacDonell, the latest writer on Samskritha Literature, says : " The Epic contains the following verse foretelling its everlasting fame * As long as moynfain ranges stand And rivers flow upon the earth, So long will this Ramayana Survive upon the lips of men. This prophecy has been perhaps even more abundantly fulfilled than the well-known prediction of Horace. No pro- duct of Sanskrit Literature has enjoyed a greater popularity in India down to the present day than the Ramayana. Its story furnishes the subject of many other Sanskrit poems as well as plays and still delights, from the lips* of reciters, the hearts of the myriads of the Indian people, as at the 11 PREFACE great annual Rama-festival held at Benares.

SRI KRISHNAVENI MAHATMYAM - P.R. Kannan (Sri Krishnaveni Mahatmyam, a part of Skanda Purana, was available in a manuscript form in Telugu script with a scholar in Vijayawada. Through the efforts of Sri Sankaracharya Swamijis of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, who are camping at Vijayawada for Chaturmasyam now (July- Sep 2016), this manuscript came to light and was transcribed into Devanagari script by Dr.G.Sankaranarayanan of Sanskrit Department in Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi University in Enathur near Kanchipuram. This essay is a summary of Sri Krishnaveni Mahatmyam, obtained thus and is written as instructed by Sri Acharyas.) Once upon a time, sage Narada was talking with Rishis on the terrible conditions in Kaliyuga and referred to the submission of Brahmadeva to Bhagavan Vishnu on this subject: O Lord, the horrifying Kaliyuga is approaching; people will commit very grave sins; what is it that will save them? Vishnu replied: It is only Tirthas (sacred waters) that can save people in the dreadful conditions of Kaliyuga. Like in every Kalpa, you create sacred rivers like Ganga and other Tirthas; I shall manifest river Krishnaa from my own body. (Kalpa is one day in the life of Brahma). “People will get rid of all their sins and attain to lofty state by meditating on Krishnaa river, touching, drinking and bathing in its waters and singing its praise. I shall manifest as Krishnaveni river with two aims in view: to protect the world and to enable my devotees to attain Mukti (Liberation).” Vishnu added that the path of Yoga is too tough and that people will attain to high state by merely bathing, drinking etc.

The 3-layered planetary systems and the 14 worlds Artist impression of the three worlds - higher, middle and lower spheres of the universe Loka-traya - the 3 planetary systems "There are three planetary systems, namely the lower worlds, the intermediate worlds and the upper worlds. The human beings on earth are situated at the beginning of the intermediate worlds, but living beings like Brahmā and his contemporaries live in the upper worlds, of which the topmost is Satyaloka. In Satyaloka the inhabitants are fully cognizant of Vedic wisdom, and thus the mystic cloud of material energy is cleared." (SB 1.19.23) As stated in the Bhagavad-gītā, there are three divisions of material spheres in this universe, namely the ūrdhva-loka (topmost planets), madhya-loka (midway planets) and adho- loka (downward planets). Beyond the ūrdhva-loka planets, that is to say above the Brahmaloka, are the material coverings of the universes, and above that is the spiritual sky, which is unlimited in expansion, containing unlimited self-illuminated Vaikuṇṭha planets inhabited by God Himself along with His associates, who are all eternally liberated living entities. Ūrdhvaloka (ऊ鵍व셍लोक).—The “upper world” or ūrdhvaloka is above mount Meru. The celestial world, the realms of the gods or heavens, the svarga-lokas - heavenly planets. Madhya-loka – the middle planetary system, world of mortals, the realms of the humans, animals and plants. Adhaloka (अधलोक).—The adha-loka (Adholoka) is the lower world, the subterranean heavens, Bila-Swarga, the realms of beings other than humans, like Daityas, Dānavas and Nāgas etc. Ancient Greek – Mayan – Sumerian conception of the tree-tiered Universe The 3-layered planetary systems and the 14 worlds According to the purāṇas this universe is called loka-traya- the three lokas (Bhūrloka, Bhuvarloka and Svarloka), or three spheres (or worlds) consisting of 14 planetary systems.

    || Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya || 1) When the King of Chedi (Damaghosha) returned to his place, Sri Janardana got to know that Rugmini, who was Mahalakshmi herself, was getting ready for a Swayamvara. 2) Her elder brother Rugmini hated Sri Hari, the lord of Ramaa, and had stopped the marriage of Rugmini, who was dear to Sri Hari, with Sri Krishna. 3) When the Swayamvara was announced, Jarasandha, along with other warriors such as Salva, Paundraka, Shishupala and others left (for the Swayamvara). 4) Then, Sri Krishna quickly left for Kundinapura. Garuda too reached him as soon as he (Sri Krishna) remembered him. 5) Due to the wind speed from his wings, the Kings fell down on the ground. When Garuda’s strength itself is so much, what to say of Sri Hari’s strength? 6 to 10) “What shall we do now for our good?” – thought all the Kings. At that time Jarasandha said thus – “This Krishna, who keeps winning, is definitely Vishnu himself. Or else, how can he be pakshivahana (rider of Garuda)? All of us have lost to him alone every time in battle. Even though we have attacked him together, we have never won even once. His brother Balarama had almost killed me. When I was badly hurt, he left me after listening to an ashareeravani. What else to say of his (Sri Krishna’s) strength? Without himself getting hurt, he is rendering us almost like a blade of grass everytime. In such a grave scenario, what may be good for us to do?” 11) Speaking thus, Jarasandha lowered his lustre-less face.

It is a part of Hindu mythology. One cannot understand Hindu dharma unless one knows Rama and Seetha, Bharata, Lakshmana, Ravana, Vibheeshana and Anjaneya . It contains 24,000 verses which have been grouped into 600 Chapters and that again into seven Kandas or sections, viz., Bala, Ayodhya, Aranya, Kishkindha, Sundara, Yuddha and the Uttara Kandas. It contains genuine classical Sanskrit poetry. Rama's young sons, Kusa and Lava, were the first reciters to the world, who sang to music this reputed work. They came in the garb of ascetics from the hermitage of their teacher Valmiki, and sang the wonderful poem in the presence of their father Rama and other heroes of the story. kaavyam raamaayaNam KR^itsnam siitaayaaScaritam mahat, paulastya vadhamityEva, cakaara caritavrataha.
