STEPPING UP TO THE CHALLENGE OF LEADERSHIP ON RACE Anthony C. Thompson* I. INTRODUCTION First and foremost, I want to thank you for inviting me to deliver this keynote address. I applaud your choice to participate in a conference on difference and leadership because these are critical issues that deserve our best thinking and our collective attention. I have watched with great interest as organizations from global businesses, to law schools, to court systems have begun embracing the concept of diversity and inclusion. Setting diversity and inclusion as operating goals in our institutions is long overdue and an important step toward addressing chronic equity issues in our society. But as I celebrate the attention and intention around such efforts, I also have a worry. I am concerned that, as we work toward the inclusion part of the effort, we are rushing a little too fast past the diversity component. As a country, we have been quite anxious to define diversity as “diversity of thought,” “diversity of experience,” and, yes, even “gender diversity” as a way of avoiding the difficulty and discomfort of examining racial diversity. But we, as lawyers and leaders, need to learn to get comfortable in that discomfort. This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract This article explains how people synchronize their thoughts through empathetic relationships and points out the elementary neuronal mechanisms orchestrating this process. The many dimensions of empathy are discussed, as is the manner by which empathy affects health and disorders. A case study of teaching children empathy, with positive results, is presented. Mirror neurons, the recently discovered mechanism underlying empathy, are characterized, followed by a theory of brain-to-brain coupling. This neuro-tuning, seen as a kind of synchronization (SYNC) between brains and between individuals, takes various forms, including frequency aspects of language use and the understanding that develops regardless of the difference in spoken tongues. Going beyond individual- to-individual empathy and SYNC, the article explores the phenomenon of syn- chronization in groups and points out how synchronization increases group cooperation and performance. The PPC was officially created November 7, 2003 and is thriving intellectually and financially. It is the leading center in the world for research, education, application and the dissemination of Positive Psychology. It is widely recognized in both the scholarly and public press. The PPC is financially self-sustaining and contributes substantial overhead to Penn. The mission of the PPC is to promote empirical research, education, training, applications, and the dissemination of Positive Psychology. Positive Psychology is the scientific study of the strengths that enable individuals and communities to thrive. This field is founded on the belief that people want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves, and to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play. PPC Report FY17- 1 SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENTS New Books: • In Homo Prospectus , Drs. Seligman, Railton, Baumeister, and Sripada argue that it is anticipating and evaluating future possibilities for the guidance of thought and action that is the cornerstone of human success. Though sapiens defines human beings as “wise”, what humans do especially well is to prospect the future. We are homo prospectus. Hooker, Ph.D. ***************************** Learning Goals: 1. Identify main categories of social and emotional processing and primary neural regions supporting each process. 2. Identify main methodological challenges of research on the neural basis of social behavior in psychopathology and strategies for addressing these challenges. 3. Identify how research in the three social processes discussed in detail – social learning, self-regulation, and theory of mind – inform our understanding of psychopathology. Summary Points: 1. Several psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and autism, are characterized by social functioning deficits, but there are few interventions that effectively address social problems. 2. Treatment development is hindered by research challenges that limit knowledge about the neural systems that support social behavior, how those neural systems and associated social behaviors are compromised in psychopathology, and how the social environment influences neural function, social behavior, and symptoms of psychopathology. 3. These research challenges can be addressed by tailoring experimental design to optimize sensitivity of both neural and social measures as well as reduce confounds associated with psychopathology. 4. Investigations on the neural mechanisms of social learning, self-regulation, and Theory of Mind provide examples of methodological approaches that can inform our understanding of psychopathology. 5. High-levels of neuroticism, which is a vulnerability for anxiety disorders, is related to hypersensitivity of the amygdala during social fear learning. 6. Contact: Amy Walker at 215-746-5084 or [email protected] NEW LEADERS LAUNCH POSITIVE NEUROSCIENCE Award-winning researchers to explore human flourishing from neural networks to social networks Aug. 2, 2010 PHILADELPHIA -- The Positive Psychology Center of the University of Pennsylvania and the John Templeton Foundation (www.templeton.org) have announced the recipients of the Templeton Positive Neuroscience Awards. The project will grant $2.9 million in award funding to 15 new research projects at the intersection of Neuroscience and Positive Psychology. The winning projects will help us understand how the brain enables human flourishing. They explore a range of topics, from the biological bases of altruism to the effects of positive interventions on the brain. The Positive Neuroscience Project (www.posneuroscience.org) was established in 2008 by Professor Martin E.P. Seligman, Director of the Penn Positive Psychology Center, with a $5.8 million grant from the John Templeton Foundation. In 2009, the project announced the Templeton Positive Neuroscience Awards competition to bring the tools of neuroscience to bear on advances in Positive Psychology. Seligman founded the quickly-growing field of Positive Psychology in 1998 based on the simple yet radical notion that what is good in life is as worthy of scientific study as what is disabling in life. “Research has shown that positive emotions and interventions can bolster health, achievement, and resilience, and can buffer against depression and anxiety,” said Seligman. “And while considerable research in neuroscience has focused on disease, dysfunction, and the harmful effects of stress and trauma, very little is known about the neural mechanisms of human flourishing. -

Research indicates that com- passion-training programs have broad health benefts, but how and why compassion- training programs are efective is still relatively unknown. This paper describes the theoretical underpinnings of a specifc compassion-training program, CBCT® (Cog- nitively-Based Compassion Training), and proposes an integrative model that draws on existing health behavior constructs to identify CBCT’s core components and hypothesizes their directionality and interaction. The model includes two primary categories of skill development: (1) intrapersonal skills leading to greater resiliency, and (2) interpersonal skills leading to greater compassion. It is hypothesized that these two pathways are mutually reinforcing and both contribute to greater wellbe- ing. This model provides a foundation for theory-driven research on the underlying mechanisms in CBCT training. An understanding of CBCT’s mechanisms is a criti- cal step towards optimizing and personalizing the intervention to meet the needs of specifc populations. Are these processes localized in specific regions, or are they distributed across the brain? Is there even a social brain? And how does any of this inform psychological theory? The course will examine research that attempts to answer these questions, 9using the tools of cognitive neuroscience to understand social functioning. This course will aim to offer you a comprehensive understanding of the methods of social neuroscience, as well as direct exposure to contemporary topics and controversies in this literature. At the end of this course, it’s my hope that you will be a conscious, savvy consumer of social neuroscience research, that you will hone your scientific writing skills, and that you will have a deeper appreciation of the connections between mind, brain, and behavior. Attendance, participation, and professionalism Attendance is required. While I will not explicitly monitor your daily attendance, missing class will definitely put you at a disadvantage for several reasons. First, on most class days, I will ask a general participation question via iClicker, to make sure we’re all on the same page. These responses will go towards your participation grade. Second, the majority of classes will feature active discussion and problem solving.
