Hester ii MALE BONDING: A QUEER ANALYSIS OF THE JAMES BOND CANON by Grant C. Hester This dissertation was prepared under the direction of the candidate's dissertation advisor, Dr. Jane Caputi, Center for Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Communication, and Multimedia and has been approved by the members of his supervisory committee. It was submitted to the faculty of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters and was accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Khaled Sobhan, Ph.D. Interim Dean, Graduate College iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Jane Caputi for guiding me through this process. She was truly there from this paper’s incubation as it was in her Sex, Violence, and Hollywood class where the idea that James Bond could be repressing his homosexuality first revealed itself to me. She encouraged the exploration and was an unbelievable sounding board every step to fruition. Stephen Charbonneau has also been an invaluable resource. Frankly, he changed the way I look at film. His door has always been open and he has given honest feedback and good advice. Oliver Buckton possesses a knowledge of James Bond that is unparalleled. I marvel at how he retains such information.

  • Consuming Audiences?: Production and Reception in Media Research
Consuming Audiences?: Production and Reception in Media Research By Ingunn Hagen and Janet Wasko (ed.) Cresskill, New Jersey: Hampton Press, 2000. ISBN: 1-572-73176-1, 330 pp., $26.50, (pbk) A review by Cynthia Baron, Bowling Green State University, US The anthology offers readers a condensed introduction to the work of several media and communication scholars whose sustained research has been published in many journals, collections, and individual volumes. Co-editor Janet Wasko's book-length studies include Movies and Money: Financing the American Film Industry (1982), Hollywood in the Information Age (1994), and Understanding Disney: The Manufacture of Fantasy (2001). Contributor Herbert I. Schiller's solo publications stretch from Mass Communications and American Empire (1969) to more recent books such as Information Inequality: the Deepening Social Crisis in America (1996). John Sinclair's studies of global television exist as a backdrop for his co-authored chapter on "Diasporic Identities: Chinese Communities and Their Media Use in Australia," just as Richard Maxwell's The Spectacle of Democracy: Spanish Television, Nationalism, and Political Tradition (1995) and Jesus Martin-Barbero's Communication, Culture and Hegemony--From the Media to Mediations (1987) inform their contributions to the edited collection. By presenting readers with original, thematically- related essays by scholars in different areas of communication research, Consuming Audiences? suggests points of contact between the work of the contributing scholars and potential connections between their work and research in other disciplines. In their introduction, Hagen and Wasko explain that the anthology originates in panels jointly sponsored by scholars in the Political Economy Section and the Network for Qualitative Audience Research at the 1994 and 1996 International Association for Mass Communication Research conferences.

  • Cast Bios Nicollette Sheridan
‘ALL YOURS’ CAST BIOS NICOLLETTE SHERIDAN (Cass) – Nicollette Sheridan has won a worldwide audience with her past television and film roles. The talented actress/producer/writer exploded on the small screen with her Golden Globe nominated role of Edie Britt, the hilarious and audacious bombshell of Wisteria Lane, on ABC’s hit Emmy award winning show “Desperate Housewives.” Sheridan was honored in her native England, receiving the 2006 Glamour Women of the Year Award for Best U.S. TV Actress, adding to her back-to-back 2005-2006 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Born and raised in England, Sheridan discovered a passion for ballet as a small child and studied furiously, broadening her love of the arts as a student at the Arts Educational School in London. In addition to theatre, she nurtured her talents as an avid equestrienne, a sculptress and is an outstanding athlete. Moving to Los Angeles and being courted to explore her talents was a natural progression. Sheridan became a household name portraying the intelligent, powerful and manipulative Paige Matheson on “Knots Landing.” This led to a myriad of other roles including those in “The People Next Door” with Faye Dunaway, “A Time To Heal” opposite Gary Cole, “Indictment: The McMartin Trial” with James Woods and “Dead Husbands” with John Ritter, along with a special guest appearance on the season finale of “Will & Grace.” Sheridan was first introduced to film audiences in Rob Reiner’s “The Sure Thing” opposite John Cusack, going on to appear in other film comedies such as “Noises Off” opposite Michael Caine, “Spy Hard” opposite Leslie Nielsen and “Beverly Hills Ninja” with Chris Farley and Chris Rock.
