THE BEST MOVIES 1996

By Robin Borjesson

1996 was a banner year for great movies. The following reviews some of the more popular releases. If you Can’t catch them on the big screen, try to find them at your favorite video store or ask your relatives to send them from abroad.

INDEPENDENCE DAY STARRIN G: WILL SMITH, BILL PULLMAN, JEFF GOLDBLUM.

This science fiction movie is about a “bunch” of aliens who intend to invade the earth over the fourth of July weekend. Fifteen huge ships settle atop ofthe major cities of the world, causing panic throughout. After the aliens destroy the major cities, the remaining humans try a counter attack which is unsuccessful. Everything seems seems hopeless until one of the main February 14, 1997 Page 27

characters (Jeff Goldblum) finds out a way to “turn off' the alien’s biggest secret. Next, we have a bang, bang “shoot ‘em” up scene á la Star Wars, and ofcourse, the humans are now vic- torious. This is a very good action flick and especially thrilling if you watch it on the big screen.

JINGLE ALL THE WAY ST ARRING: ARNOLD SCHWARTZNEGGER

This comic movie has Arnie playing the role of a Confused dad who is desperately trying to find the perfect toy for his son for Christmas. After wading through all of the shops in the area, he has to face the “terrible” truth: the toy that his son wants for Christmas is sold out. He now has to compete against another dad with the same problem. When trying to competively find the elusive toy, he exposes himself to great dangers such as being chased by angry rein- deers. This is a very funny movie with lots of laughs and scenes that cheer you up. So if you happen to be in a bad mood and in a mood to see a comic Christmas tale, I recommend this movie.

THE ROCK STARRING: SEAN CONNERY, NICHOLAS CAGE

Eighty-three of General Francis Hummel`s soldiers died during a secret military opera- tion. When he fails to secure benefits and recognition for the families of his dead soldiers, he decides to take control of Alcatraz Island. He does this with the aid of a few hand - picked, highly skilled marines. He then threatens to launch chemical Weapons on the San Fransisco Bay Area. The government then turns to chemical gas expert, Stanley Godspeed, and a long time convict whose claim to fame is that he’s the only man to have escaped from the Island prison. The convict has an intimate knowledge of Alcatraís subterranean, which might lead to the success of the governmenfis mission. This is a movie with lots of action and excitement — you never get bored. Sean Connery does an excellent job in playing the role of the English secret agent who has been kept in prison for a life time, by the American government without a trail, and Nicholas Cage is brilliantly cast as the happy- go -lucky chemical gas expert. I highly recommend this movie if you°re looking for an unrealistic experience.

SPY HARD STARRING:

Leslie is playing the role of a secret agent called WD - 40 in this outrageously funny of the spy world. He is assigned to ruin the evil plan of his arch enemy General Rancor - a tyrannical madman who lost two limbs in an explosion. Rancor is now armed and very dan- gerous, so WD - 40’s mission is to prevent him from destroying the world. WD - 40 must also rescue the daughter of his former partner, and, of course, do some uncover work with a sexy fellow agent. Guided by a spy chief who disguises himself as office furniture, WD - 40 plans to...(sorry the rest is Classified - find out more about the movie by watching it). This movie is so full of sick humor that you barely understand the plot, but if you want a good, but strange, laugh take it in.

BRAVEHEART STARRING (AND DIRECTING): MEL GIBSON

This is a sweeping story about Scotland”s brutal battle for independence in the l3th century. When William Wallace”s (Mel Gibson) wife is murdered by English troops, his quest for revenge quickly turns into an impassioned fight for his country”s freedom. The tales of Wallace”s bravery spread fast, and encourage every commoner to take arms against the English and escalate their crusade into a full scale war. Page 28 Middle School Scribbler

It is a very “bloody” and emotional movie which stays in your mind weeks after you see it. Oiie of Mel Gibsonls best movies yet.

OTHER POPULAR MOVIES WHICH I RECOMMEND FOR 1996:

*GOLDEN EYE *TWISTER *THE ARRIVAL *BLOWN AWAY *MISSION IMPOSSIBLE *DAY LIGHT *ERASER *THE CROW - CITY OF ANGELS *SPACE JAM *RANSOM *CHAIN REACTION *STAR TREK - FIRST CONTACT

There were a lot of albums were released iii the past year. some good. some bud. The Scribbler staff decided to eoiiipile a list and review' some ol tlie belter and and some ot the “iiot so griiitl” albums. Here they are:

which still seems to work for them. A fantastic album. A must to have.

Presidents of the United States of America-II What can you say about the PUSA? Wait, I think I found the Words for them. They are the worst band this world has ever seen. Their stupid ideas of originality like not having a full set of strings on their guitars, is a total put on. Basically, I think these guys are the biggest losers in the world. You don”t even have to hear them. Words of advice: Do not support these morons.

Pearl Jam-No Code No Code is Pearl J am”s fourth album and they are still a great band. Pearl Jam fans might be Surprised at how mellow this album is, but that is due to the influence of new Pearl Jam drummer, Jack Irons. Overall, the album is pretty good, with some high points with songs like “Mankind” and more low points than the last three albums have had. This album should be a priority on your CD list.

As you can see, there have been some definite high points (Pearl J am”s No Code), and some very obvious low points (Presidents of the United States of America's II). We at the scrib- bler think that this year in music has been pretty good. Look over your own collection of music from the year of nineteen hundred and ninety-six and see if you think the same. får Andrei Gillott and Fairuz Kamilan’s : International news Round up of 1996!

It's a fresh new year and there's only one semester to work through. This is a round up of the most significant things that have happened in the last semester of 1996.

*Because of the dreaded monsoon rains, the MSGA pool party at the beginning of the year was postponed three times.

*There was a slight change in this year's mini-course. The regular 7th grade and 8th grade places were switched around, the 7th grade going to Camp Corbett while the Sth grade went to Rishikesh.

*The Middle School students performed an excellent musical, "The Pirates of Penzance" written by Gilbert and Sullivan.

*Parties organised by the MSGA were enjoyed by the students.

*There was an interesting debate within the Sth grade US history classes in which Middle School students had the opportunity to Vote for the best US president based on the Sth grade speeches. Before the US elections the 8th grade class organised a debate in the theater. Students were divided into three groups representing the three presidential candi- dates and answered questions put to them.

`"“We had a few India Forums in the Theater when invited guests spoke to the Middle School students on various interesting topics like VVildlife in India and Mahatma Gandhi.

"There was a swim meet in Dhaka where the AES Swim Team won first place. W 'ay to go Falcons!!
