N. Golvers (°1950), PhD Classical Philology, Senior Researcher at the Katholieke Universiteit (KULeuven), and former lecturer of at the Katholieke Hogeschool Leuven (KHLeuven), studied since the mid-1980s Latin (Portuguese, etc.) texts on the Jesuit mission in , especially in the early Qing period, starting from F. Verbiest's astronomical work (1993: F. Verbiest and the Astronomia Europaea; 2003: F. Verbiest and the Chinese Heaven [2004 award of the Royal Academy of ); The Mathematical mss. of F. Verbiest from Constantinople (2009; with E. Nicolaidis). Another book (2001) concerns F. de Rougemont's Account Book (1674-6) on ‘daily life' in the Jiangnan Province (translated in Chinese). Many shorter contributions on other, mainly cultural aspects of the Jesuit mission of the padroado, and its French counterpart in the same period, with regard to history of science and book culture, and the communication networks between Europe and China, using mainly Latin, Portuguese, Italian, French, German and Dutch (-Flemish) sources. Recently he finished a comprehensive study on the Western books and libraries in the Jesuit mission of China between ca. 1650 – 1750 (Libraries of Western Learning for China. Vol. 1. Logistics of book acquisition and circulation, Leuven, 2012; Vol. 2. Formation of Jesuit Libraries, 2013) and vol. 3 (“On books and readers”), 2015. In this book historical research, some categories got particular attention: a. Portuguese book (Portuguese books and their readers in the Jesuit mission of China (17th-18th centuries), , Centro Cientifico e Cultural de , 2011, 309 pp.); b. the books collected by Johann Schreck Terrentius in his learned network during his ‘tour’ in Europe (1615-1618) and the origins of the Jesuit library of the Portuguese college in Peking; © medical books; (d) books on technology and . His current projects are: (a) a revised and copiously annotated edition of Ferdinand Verbiest’s correspondence, including 65 newly found letters; (b) a collection of 25 (partly old and revised, partly new) articles on: ‘Communication and circulation of knowledge between Europe and China, and 2 vice-versa, in the 17th and 18th century (‘routes of learning’; factors of inconvenience; the role of particular persons; circulation through books, correspondence; periodicals, & newspapers; illustrations; objects).
