Στο τρένο έχει επιβιβαστεί και ο συγγραφέας Κώστας Ακρίβος που θα διαβάσει απόσπασμα από το βιβλίο του «Αρρένων και άλλων αποδημητικών». 6 Introduction The booklet you are holding in your hands was created in the framework of the Grundtvig learning partnership, “Once upon a time…in Europe” in which the Second Chance School of Volos participates. The aim of the programme is to establish a communication channel among the people of Europe through literature, in order to highlight the similarities and the differences among them in their way of thinking, their culture and their world view in general. With our partners that are adult education providers from 8 European countries (Spain, Portugal, Italy, Turkey, Croatia, Poland, Denmark, Iceland) we started a reading club and we read in turn a book suggested by each one of the participating countries that has been translated in the other languages. After reading a book, the participants discuss and exchange their ideas about the book, express their impressions and emotions artistically, watch the respective film, if one exists etc. This phase takes place both, in a virtual learning environment, and during the meetings of the groups in each country. More information about the books, the partners and the final products can be found at the following web address, http://users.sch.gr/Vigklas/2012_2014/index.html (work in progress). The texts in this booklet are about the mythology, the history, the culture, the people, all these elements that make up the image of the city we live in. It will be a useful companion for our literary tour in the city. During this tour, we will visit points of interest related in some way with the selected texts and we will try to acquaint our partners with our history, past and present. To this end, some of the writers of the texts will join us in this literary tour and read their texts themselves. So, we will start our tour from the railway station of the city that was constructed by the Italian engineer Evaristo de Chirico, father of the well-known surrealist painter Giorgio de Chirico. In the selected excerpt from Giorgio de Chirico’s book “Memories from my life”, young Giorgio remembers his games in the relatively new city of Volos (end of the 19th century) and narrates some metaphysical experiences that influenced and determined later his style of painting. A few meters away from the railway

TOURISM ACADEMY VOLOS THE COUNTRY OF CENTAURS PRESENTATION OF THE AREA ACCOMMODATION COSTS& THE REGION 2 Volos is one of the largest Greek cities and one of the major ports of the country. It is located in the center of Greece (320 km north of Athens and 219 km south of Thessaloniki) and built in the cove of Pagasitikos at the foot of Mount Pelion. It combines the charm of the sea with the mysterious beauty of the Centaurs Mountain. The beautiful city is connected with the famous Argonauts, one of the major epics of Greek mythological cycle. Mount Pelion was in Greek mythology the land of the Centaurs, mythological creatures with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a horse. The fairest of them, Chiron trained the sons of the gods and heroes in a cave below the summit of Pelion. Asclepius and Achilles, the hero of the Trojan War, were among his most famous students. The wealth of the region and its great history is reflected in every part of the city. There are a many mansions, public palaces, museums, industrial facilities of the 20th century and historical churches which make the visit in Volos really enjoyable. The visitor can wander around the beautiful seafront with picturesque shops, the famous “tsipouro” places, where you can enjoy traditional tsipouro (drink produced by grapes) and tasteful seafood. The pedestrian seaside avenue Argonauts and the passenger port in the western end, with stunning views to the open sea, is the most popular meeting point and promenade for residents and visitors of the city.

  • Central Greece Κεντρική Ελλάδα
© Lonely Planet Publications 229 C e n t r a l G r e e c e Κεντρική Ελλάδα It’s no coincidence that the rugged terrain of central Greece was the setting for heroic strug- gles among the gods and mortals. Journeys to this region provide glimpses of the essential character of the Greek people, along with plenty of outdoor adventures and unforgettable landscapes. The ruins at Delphi, where Alexander the Great sought the advice of the famous oracle of Delphi, remain one of Greece’s most inspiring archaeological sites and are also the starting point for hikes that follow ancient footpaths. The northern region of Thessaly is home to the monastery-topped pinnacles of Meteora, with buildings dating from the 14th century. The spectacular columns of rock are not only a mecca for Greek Orthodox pilgrims, but also home to world-class rock climbing, with over 100 sandstone peaks and towers to choose from. To the east lies the Pelion Peninsula, crisscrossed with old cobblestone donkey paths that link lush mountain hamlets with seaside coves and fishing villages. Sandy beaches rival the best of the Aegean islands, but without the crowds. According to Greek mythology, it was CENTRAL GREECE in nearby Volos that Jason and the Argonauts set sail in search of the Golden Fleece, in a boat made from timbers of the Pelion forests. Overlooking the Gulf of Corinth, the steep slopes of Mt Parnassos invite modern-day hik- ers to retrace ancient walking trails. River-rafting opportunities abound in the South Pindos ranges, and the high alpine meadows are perfect for breezy summer hikes.
