Welcome from the President ELCOME TO THE 29TH ANNUAL Great Taste of the Midwest. At a time when we probably should be over- whelmed by the explosive growth of the craft beer industry, we are too busy trying to figure Wout how to make this event a better experience for all. To that end, we are excited that we have maintained the same foot- print as we’ve had in past years, but have added more brewer space, by moving our merch tents and adding a few new tents to a previously restricted staff only area of the park (inside the “loop road”). This allows us bring in some new brewers while continuing to bring back the brewers that you come to expect to see at the Great Taste of the Midwest. I would like to thank Great Taste Chairman, Mark Garthwaite and the multitude of volunteers that make this event happen. We are all very proud that this is the only event of this size that is run by a 100% volunteer effort. Their passion for beer is a large part of what makes a volunteer effort of this size a success. I would also like to thank all of the Brewers that come to the Great Taste of the Midwest. All of “our” passion for beer flows from their passion. As the event has grown and produced more return Brewers each year, we’ve come to think of the Brewers as family coming home every year on the second Saturday in August. Sadly, I have to acknowledge the passing of several MHTG members since the last Great Taste. -

Introduction Durga puja, or the worship of goddess Durga, is the single most important festival in Bengal’s rich and diverse religious calendar. It is not just that her temples are strewn all over this part of the world. In fact, goddess Kali, with whom she shares a complementary history, is easily more popular in this regard. But as a one-off festivity, Durga puja outstrips anything that happens in Bengali life in terms of pomp, glamour, and popularity. And with huge diasporic populations spread across the world, she is now also a squarely international phenomenon, with her puja being celebrated wherever there are even a score or so of Hindu Bengali families in one place. This is one Bengali festival that has people participating across religions and languages. Thakurpukur Kolkata 700008 West Bengal INDIA Contact no: - 91 33 2496 0051 October 2014 The major festival of Durga Puja is now over and by the time you read this, Diwali will also have come and gone. Diwali is celebrated in most of India, but here in West Bengal we celebrate Kali Puja. This is the night when Bengalis let off their fireworks, light candles and an evening that everyone at shuktara really enjoys. Because Diwali is usually the following day, they use this excuse and have two nights of fireworks! However this year, both festivals fall on the same day – but I expect they will keep some fireworks back anyway and celebrate for a couple of nights running. As with the Pujas, I usually hide away somewhere quietly! The Durga Puja festivities were enjoyed by everyone at shuktara. Some of the older boys went out on their own, some stayed at home and some of them went with Pappu to help carry Prity and our new girl Moni around the city. They always hire a big car for this occasion and stay out all night long. At the beginning of September, Pappu had received a phone call from Childline India Foundation about a little girl who they were unable to care for. -

“CHILDREN HAVE THEIR OWN WORLD OF BEING”: AN ETHNOGRAPHY OF CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES ON THE DAY OF SARASWATI PUJA SEMONTEE MITRA Apart from Diwali1 and Durga Puja,2 few Hindu religious festivals are organized and celebrated publicly in the United States. Saraswati Puja is one such festival. Saraswati Puja, also known as Vasant Panchami, is a Hindu festival celebrated in early February to mark the onset of spring. On this day, Hindus, especially Bengalis,3 worship the goddess Saraswati, the Vedic goddess of knowledge and wisdom, music, arts, and science. She is also the companion of Lord Brahma who, with her knowledge and wisdom, created the universe. Bengalis consider participation in this puja4 compulsory for students, scholars, and creative artists. Therefore, Indian American Bengali parents force their children to participate in this festival, whereas they might be lax on other religious occasions. As a participant-observer of this recent Indian festival in Central Pennsylvania, United States, I found that the cultural scene—the collective, communal celebration of Saraswati Puja—was not as simple as children of foreign-born parents following a transplanted tradition and gaining ethnic identity. On the contrary, I noticed that Indian American Bengali children typically indulged in activities such as games that are not traditionally part of the religious observance in India. Their interactions, both in and out of the social frame of a religious ritual, especially Saraswati Puja, reveal that in America the festive day has taken on the function -

WHEN YOU CRAVE SOMETHING DIFFERENT By Adam Groves, The Bedlam Files 1. MS. 45 (1981) An easy pick, given that I consider Abel Ferrara’s MS. 45 the highlight of the rape-revenge grindhouse movie cycle, and that the film’s climax, involving a massacre at a Halloween party, is MS. 45’s undoubted highlight. 2. THE NIGHT THAT PANICKED AMERICA (1975) This one’s a bit of a cheat (as the night in question is actually October 30) but a worthwhile choice nonetheless, a reality-based horror story that effectively dramatizes Orson Welles’ 1936 WAR OF THE WORLDS radio broadcast and the widespread chaos that resulted. 3. THE AMERICAN SCREAM (2012) A most interesting documentary portrayal of the DIY Halloween haunted house craze, as seen through the attempts of several Massachusetts residents at scaring the Hell out of their neighbors. 4. GINGER SNAPS (2001) The finest werewolf movie of the 00s, and much it takes place on Halloween. 5. HELL HOUSE (2002) Another Halloween haunted house doco, this one focusing on a Christian run attraction designed to scare people straight. A film that’s both hilarious and appalling in equal measure. 6. THE OCTOBER GARDEN (1983) A ten minute short marked by skilled and precise horror filmmaking that, to add to the superlatives, was accomplished entirely without dialogue. 7. RIDING THE BULLET (2004) A puzzlingly underrated Stephen King adaptation that’s scary, thoughtful and even touching in its evocation of Halloween night, 1969, haunted by a very real ghost. 8. TERRIFIER (2011) I’m referring here to the twenty minute TERRIFIER short and not the misguided 2016 feature version, as in short film format the highly minimalistic narrative, consisting of a young woman being chased around by a clown faced manic on Halloween, works quite well. -

Basic Information on Shraddha Rituals Shraddha (Sanskrit) is a ceremony in honour and for the welfare of dead relatives, observed with great strictness at various fixed periods and on occasions of rejoicing as well as mourning by the surviving relatives. It is not a funeral ceremony, but an act of reverential homage to a deceased person performed by relatives, and is supposed to supply the dead with strengthening nutriment after the performance of the previous funeral ceremonies has endowed them with ethereal bodies. In Hinduism, the deceased relative is considered a preta (wandering ghost) until the first sraddha ceremony, when he attains a position among the spiritual pitris in their blissful abode. Shraddha Activities Shraddha rituals consist of following main activities – Vishwadeva Sthapana (ववेदेव थापना ) Pindadan ( प डदान ) Tarpan ( तपxण ) Feeding the Brahmin ( ामण भोज ) Pindadan is the offering of rice, cow’s milk, ghee, sugar and honey in form of Pinda (rounded heap of the offering) to ancestors. Pandadan should be done with whole-heartedness, devotion, sentiments and respect to the deceased soul to fulfil it. Tarpan is the offering of water mixed with black sesame (तल ), Barley ( ज ), Kusha grass ( कु शा ) and white flours. It is believed that ancestors are appeased by the process of Tarpan. Feeding the Brahmin is a must to complete the Shraddha ritual. Offering to the crows are also made before food is offered to the Brahmin. Pitru Paksha Period and Duration Pitru Paksha is the period of fifteen lunar days when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors, especially through food offerings. -

Brianna Mayhair Dakota Student Today, Halloween is seen has a fun holiday that allows people to dress up and become some- one else for a night and col- lect as much candy as possible, but how did it start? Around 2,000 years ago when the Celts were in what is present-day Ire- land, the United Kingdom, and northern France, they creat- ed Samhain. The ancient Celt- ic Festival of Samhain, which included people having bon- fires and dressing up to scare off ghosts and other evil spir- its. The spirits were thought to damage crops and cause trou- ble. Samhain is believed to have started Halloween. Around this time period, November 1 was the day that marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter, which was associated with death. They believed that the worlds of the living and the dead collided on the night of October 31, so they created Samhain. Celts believed that the spirits not only caused trouble and damaged crops, but also affected the priests as well. They believed that the spirits made it easier for the priests to predict the future. To please the Celtic deities and prevent Trevor Alveshere/Dakota Student the spread of trouble, the Celts Halloween has an extensive history.
