ABSTRACT RICE, CARL ROSS. Diocletian’s “Great Persecutions”: Minority Religions and the Roman Tetrarchy. (Under the direction of Prof. S. Thomas Parker) In the year 303, the Roman Emperor Diocletian and the other members of the Tetrarchy launched a series of persecutions against Christians that is remembered as the most severe, widespread, and systematic persecution in the Church’s history. Around that time, the Tetrarchy also issued a rescript to the Pronconsul of Africa ordering similar persecutory actions against a religious group known as the Manichaeans. At first glance, the Tetrarchy’s actions appear to be the result of tensions between traditional classical paganism and religious groups that were not part of that system. However, when the status of Jewish populations in the Empire is examined, it becomes apparent that the Tetrarchy only persecuted Christians and Manichaeans. This thesis explores the relationship between the Tetrarchy and each of these three minority groups as it attempts to understand the Tetrarchy’s policies towards minority religions. In doing so, this thesis will discuss the relationship between the Roman state and minority religious groups in the era just before the Empire’s formal conversion to Christianity. It is only around certain moments in the various religions’ relationships with the state that the Tetrarchs order violence. The Conversion of Rome Intro: This lesson will cover the beginning of Christendom - when the church became united to the state and Christianity became a dominant cultural influence in the Roman Empire. Constantine -Reigned from 306-337. -He was a coemperor with Licinius between 311 and 324. -He was the illegitimate son of a Roman military leader (Constantius) and a Christian freedwoman named Helena. -Even before his conversion, Constantine thought that Christianity could be used to help save classical culture; Christianity had practical benefits even if it was untrue. -He founded one of the most important cities in history and named it after himself - “Constantinople.” In This Sign Conquer In 312 Constantine was overwhelmed at a Battle at the Milvian bridge over the Tiber River. He was fighting a rival to the imperial throne named Maxentius. He supposedly had a vision of a Christian symbol with the Latin phrase “In Hoc Signo Vinces” (“in this sign conquer”). He had his troops put a XP (chi-rho, the first two letters of the word “Christ” in Greek) on their shields and banners. He won this battle and took the victory as a sign of favor from the Christian God. However, some think that the real reason Constantine promoted Christianity was because it could unite his fracturing empire. In 313 he passed the Edict of Toleration which made Christianity a religio licita (legal religion). Christianity had gone from being illegal to being an official religion of the Roman Empire overnight. Churches were given their property back and subsidized by the state, clergy were exempted from public service, and Sunday was declared an official day of rest and worship (which was the same day that the cult of the “invincible sun” worshipped its god). -

At times certain gods would be opposed to others, and they would try to outdo each other. Plato's disciple, Aristotle , also disagreed that polytheistic deities existed, because he could not find enough empirical evidence for it. Once established there in a conspicuous position, the Olympians came to be identified with local deities and to be assigned as consorts to the local god or goddess. -

The Blood of the Martyrs: The Attitudes of Pagan Emperors and Crowds Towards Christians, From Nero to Julian Domenico Miletti Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in fulfillment of the requirements for the Master’s degree in Classical Studies Department of Classics and Religious Studies Faculty of Arts and Sciences University of Ottawa © Domenico Miletti, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This MA thesis will discuss the reception of common, non-scholarly polytheists (pagans) to the persecution of Christians from the early empire until the Great Persecution (303-313, 322-324). Though modern scholars have addressed this issue and asserted that there was a change in attitude, many have not developed this into anything more than a passing statement. When chronologically analyzing the Christian acts, passions, letters, and speeches recounting the deaths of martyrs deemed historically authentic, and accounting for the literary and biblical topoi, we can demonstrate that the position of non-Christians changed. The methodology of this thesis will chronologically assess the martyr acts, passions, speeches, and letters which are historically accurate after literary and biblical topoi are addressed. These sources are available in the appendix. Throughout this analysis, we will see two currents. The primary current will seek to discern the change in pagan reception of anti-Christian persecution, while the second current will draw attention to the Roman concept of religio and superstitio, both important in understanding civic religion which upheld the pax deorum and defined loyalty to the Roman order through material sacrifices and closely connected to one's citizenship. Religio commonly denoted proper ritual practices, while superstitio defined irregular forms of worship which may endanger the state. -

Andrews University Seminary Studies, Spring 1983, Vol. 21, No. 1, 3-25 Copyright 1983 by Andrews University Press ROME AND CHRISTIANITY UNTIL A.D. 62" SAMUELE BACCHIOCCHI Andrews University What was the attitude of the Roman State toward Christianity until A.D. 62, that is, up to approximately the first half of Nero's reign? It is generally assumed that the Roman emperors and administrators during this period largely ignored Christianity, treating it at best as one of the several Jewish sects. This essay challenges this prevailing view by reexamining significant biblical and secular data. The available sources suggest, in my view, an early Roman recognition of the basic difference between the politi- cally oriented Jewish messianic movements and the non-political nature of Christianity. This early recognition contributed to a basic policy of Roman tolerance toward Christianity during the period under consideration, with intolerance springing up only thereafter. 1. Tiberius and Christianity, A.D. 14-37 The Trial of Jesus The trial of Jesus, which occurred during Tiberius' reign, offers a logical starting point for our inquiry, since it represents the first major confrontation between the Roman authorities and the Founder of Christianity (Mark 14:1; Luke 23: 1-25; John 11:47-50; 18:38; 19:6; Acts 3:13-17).l The four Gospels are unanimous in attributing, not to the Roman, but to the Jewish authorities the initiative for the trial and condemnation of Jesus; and similarly, in *Shortened and adapted from a paper presented at the Midwest Regional Meeting, Society of Biblical Literature, Ann Arbor, Michigan, Feb.
