That’s like going from Omaha to Oklahoma City. On average, railroads are four times more fuel efficient than trucks. Moving freight by rail instead of truck reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 75 percent. Cutting Highway One train can carry as much freight as several hundred trucks. It would have taken Gridlock approximately 29.9 million additional trucks to handle the 538.2 million tons of freight that originated, terminated, or passed through Nebraska by rail in 2009. JULY 2001 Railroad Safety Statistics-Annual Report 2000 FOREWORD The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has established an ultimate goal of “Zero Tolerance” for railroad-related accidents, injuries and fatalities. In pursuit of that goal, significant progress has been made, particularly over the past six years, in reducing the number of train collisions, derailments, highway-rail grade crossing incidents, and injuries to railroad workers. These results have been achieved because of a collaborative effort involving the FRA, railroad management, rail labor, equipment suppliers, and contractors, as well as other federal and state agencies whose mission involves ensuring railroad safety. Central to the success of this rail safety effort is the ability to understand the nature of rail-related accidents and to analyze trends in railroad safety. The FRA’s Railroad Safety Statistics – Annual Report 2000 is intended as a resource for the FRA’s safety partners. It is also intended as a general reference source for individuals and organizations with an interest in rail safety issues. Statistical data, tables and charts are provided to depict the nature and cause of many rail-related accidents and incidents that occurred in 2000 Furthermore, selected historical data is included to provide a baseline for understanding the railroad industry’s improving safety performance. It is hoped that the information provided in this publication will provide insight into the most significant safety issues facing the rail industry and, in turn, lead to continued rail safety improvements. -

Regional and Short Line Railroads in the United States Since the Staggers Act of 1980, the number of nonclass I freight railroads has grown by about 260%, and there are now 574 nonclass I freight hauling railroads in the United States. While nonclass I rail holding companies (companies owning multiple nonclass I freight railroads) existed prior to Staggers, the existence of such holding companies proliferated post-Staggers, particularly in the 1990s. Today 341 (59%) of the nonclass I freight railroads and 64.5% of the nonclass I mileage are owned/controlled by 81 holding companies. The buying and sell- ing activity in this market is very active. This article documents this growth and notes the participants in this dynamic industry. In addition, the changing ownership of individually owned nonclass I freight railroads is also documented and problems faced by nonclass I freight railroads are discussed. by W. The trains were operated from Booneville, Iowa, west to Council Bluffs on June 9th, 2007, returning on June 10th with east bound revenue. The trains operated on the scenic former Rock Island line operated by Iowa Interstate Railroad. This is the first such plan which addresses all types of transportation which are available to our citizens. This plan took over a year to create and many agencies, organizations, and individuals contributed to its development. Historically, transportation has been essential in the settling and developing of our state. A state as vast as ours relies heavily on a transportation network which is capable of sustaining our rural element as well as supporting our urban areas. This plan provides the direction for taking our transportation programs into the 21st Century. To achieve the goals identified in this plan, those same entities which helped create the plan must now cooperate in a continuing effort to achieve success. Such a commitment will be necessary if those transportation services necessary to sustain the 'Good Life' are to be realized.
