21ST — 27TH FEBRUARY 2021 STRATA 3 STAGE TUE, FEBRUARY 23RD 2021 TOP SPONSORS OFFICIAL CAR theuaetour.com 23rd February 2021 THE STAGE REPORT Stage 3 – STRATA Stage – km 166 START: Strata Manufacturing – 131 riders are underway as the flag is dropped at 12:23. Trek-Segafredo’s Tiberi does not start. Gallopin and De Gendt make a move off the front from the outset. Three kilometres into the race, they are 18” up the road. The peloton grants them some leeway, and the gap increases quickly. At km 8, the breakers’ lead is 1’40”, rising to 3’50” at km 18. UAE Team Emirates move to the front of the bunch, setting a gentle pace. At km 25 of racing, the gap is up to 4’50”. Intermediate Sprint (Al Qattara – km 28.6) Gallopin claims the IS effortlessly ahead of De Gendt. Gaviria and Mørkøv come in third and fourth, respectively, 4’40” behind. At km 30 of racing, the leading duo are 4'30" ahead of the bunch; 35 kilometres into the race, the gap is further up to 5’35”. Average speed after one hour of racing: 42.800 km/h. Out in front, the breakaway riders continue to increase their lead, which reaches 5’55” after 45 km of racing. At km 60, the peloton is some 6’30” down on the escapees. Bahrain, BikeExchange, Bora-Hansgrohe and Ineos Grenadiers riders move to the front of the bunch, stepping up the pace despite riding in the headwind: at km 70, the gap is down to 5'28". Average speed after two hours: 40.500 km/h. The pace in the peloton remains brisk, and the gap drops to 3'50" at km 85. Ganna and Ineos try to force a split, shaving a chunk of seconds off the escapees’ lead. At the -75 km marker, the gap is down to 2’45”. As the pace relents, the gap stretches out once again: at km 110, the breakers hold a buffer of 4’25”; with 40 km to go: 4’. Average speed after three hours of racing: 43.100 km/h. Qhubeka-Assos, Bora-Hansgrohe and Deceuninck-QuickStep are active at the front of the peloton, and the speed begins to pick up once again. With 35 km to go, the gap is down to 3’45”; with 30 km to go: 3’30”. Movistar are also prominent at the head of the bunch. Time gap with 25 km to go: 3’15”; with 20 km to go: 2’40”. Intermediate Sprint (Green Mubazzarah – km 152.5) Gallopin claims the intermediate sprint ahead of De Gendt, with Mørkøv and Ganna taking third and fourth place, respectively, ahead of the peloton (gap: 1’28”). Gallopin attacks at the base of the climb. The peloton winds up the pace, shaving seconds off Gallopin (who is only 30” ahead), and reeling De Gendt in with less than 10 km to go. At 8 km out, the break is eventually over. UAE Team Emirates jump at the head of the bunch, with Polanc, Formolo and Majka in prominent position. Almeida, Kuss, Nibali, Yates and Powless also wind up the pace. Repeated surges along the climb trim the peloton down to a handful of riders. Yates, Pogacar and Kuss kick at the front with a just over 4 km to go. Yates then accelerates again. Pogacar follows him, whereas Kuss is left behind a little less than 3 km to go. With 2 km left, Yates and Pogacar have almost 30” on Kuss. Almeida, Vanhoucke and Powless are just on his wheel. At the flamme rouge, Yates and Pogacar are still fighting head to head. The chasing group is trailing at less than 40”. Pogacar kicks just a few bends before the finish, leaving Yates behind and storming to victory. FINISH (Jebel Hafeet – km 166) Pogacar claims the stage ahead of Yates (same time), Higuita, Buchmann, Vanhoucke, Almeida (48”), Stork, Powless (54”) and Harper (1’). Bouchard and the others have losses of over 1’.     Organizational Forms in Professional Cycling – Efficiency Issues of the UCI Pro Tour Luca Rebeggiani§ * Davide Tondani DISCUSSION PAPER NO. 345 First Version: August 2006 This Version: July 2007 ISSN: 0949–9962 ABSTRACT: This paper gives a first economic approach to pro cycling and analyses the changes induced by the newly introduced UCI Pro Tour on the racing teams’ behaviour. We develop an oligopolistic model starting from the well known Cournot framework to analyse if the actual setting of the UCI Pro Tour leads to a partially unmeant behaviour of the racing teams. In particular, we show that the blamed regional concentration of their race participation depends on a lack of incentives stemming from the licence assignation procedure. Our theo- retical results are supported by empirical data concerning the performance of the racing teams in 2005 and 2006. As a recommendation for future improvements, we derive from the model the need for a relegation system for racing teams. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Aufsatz stellt die erste ökonomische Analyse des professionellen Radsports dar. Er analysiert insbesondere die Anreizwirkungen der neuen UCI Pro Tour auf Teams und Fahrer. Ausgehend von dem bekannten Cournot-Ansatz entwickeln wir ein einfaches Oligopol-Modell, um zu untersuchen, ob die der- zeitige Pro Tour-Organisation zu einem unerwünschten Verhalten der Teilnehmer führt. Wir zeigen, dass insbe- sondere das Problem der geographischen Konzentration der Rennteilnahmen der Teams von den mangelnden Anreizen abhängt, die vom jetzigen Lizenzvergabesystem ausgehen. Unsere theoretischen Ergebnisse werden durch empirische Daten aus der Pro Tour 2005 und 2006 gestützt. Als Empfehlung für zukünftige Entwicklun- gen leiten wir aus dem Modell die Notwendigkeit einer Öffnung der Pro Tour ab, mit Auf- und Abstiegsmög- lichkeiten für Rennteams.

Jumbo-Visma’s Van Emden does not start. After an intense stage yesterday, the peloton rolls along together at a steady pace. Fifteen, 20, and 35 kilometres into the race, the riders seem to be holding off their attacks. After one hour of racing, the average speed is 37.500 km/h. Groupama riders are in prominent position at the front of the bunch, but the pace is steady. The situation remains unchanged 40 and 45 km into the race: the peloton is still all together. Intermediate Sprint (Umm-al-Quwain – km 51.3) Dekker claims the first intermediate sprint ahead of Milan, Cattaneo and Gallopin. The peloton returns to a steady pace immediately afterwards. Seventy kilometres into the race, the peloton is still packed, although the speed has picked up a little. Average speed after two hours of racing: 39.400 km/h. Ineos, Deceuninck, Bora and UAE rotate at the front, but the peloton is not splitting. At the -100 km marker, all is calm. We are starting to see some action, as Bidard and Le Gac clip off at km 117, immediately opening up an advantage. At the first time recording, they are 25” ahead of the bunch; at km 119, the gap rises to 45”, and is further up to 1’05” at km 122.

    Spitzenbesetzung verspricht großartige Deutschland Tour In genau zehn Wochen, am 25. August, findet auf der Stralsunder Hafeninsel die Teampräsentation der Deutschland Tour statt. Zu den Mannschaften, die in diesem Jahr um den Gewinn der Deutschland Tour kämpfen, gehören die beiden deutschen WorldTeams BORA – hansgrohe und Team DSM. Auch Teams mit deutschen Fahrern, wie Alpecin – Fenix, Bahrain – Victorious und Israel Start-Up Nation, sowie internationale Spitzenmannschaften haben sich angekündigt. 22 Mannschaften mit jeweils sechs Fahrern starten vom 26. bis 29. August bei der Deutschland Tour. Die Rundfahrt führt über vier Etappen von der Hansestadt Stralsund nach Nürnberg. 727 Kilometer sind auf dem Weg von der Ostseeküste nach Franken zu absolvieren. Nach einem flachen, windanfälligen Teilstück in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern wird der Mittelteil der Rundfahrt in Thüringen welliger. Die Schlussetappe in Bayern hat wahren Finalstatus – nur 160 Kilometer lang, aber gespickt mit 13 Anstiegen. Die Deutschland Tour hat sich im Rennkalender der weltweit besten Teams und Fahrer etabliert. Gleich 13 Teams der diesjährigen Tour de France werden auch bei der Deutschland Tour starten. Zuletzt haben der Tour de France-Gewinner Geraint Thomas und Tour de France-Etappensieger, wie Julian Alaphilippe, der Rundfahrt ihren Stempel aufgedrückt. Mit dem Konzept einer Klassiker-Rundfahrt und dem Rennzeitpunkt Ende August ist die Deutschland Tour für Sprinter und angriffslustige Etappenjäger sehr attraktiv. Die Etappen sind so gestaltet, dass jeder Tag, wie ein Klassiker ausgefahren wird, die Fans wechselnde Sieger erleben und die Gesamtwertung bis zum Schlusstag offenbleibt. Gesucht ist der Nachfolger von Jasper Stuyven. Der Gewinner von Mailand-Sanremo hat sich 2019 mit nur 3 Sekunden Vorsprung das Rote Trikot des Gesamtsiegers gesichert.

The race, witnessing the participation of 25 teams and 175 riders, will take place on a track of 1.344 km in total. The press release of the race was held in Nevsehir Crowne Plaza with the participation of local and foreign press members and a large number of guests.
