Located on the north side of 7th St., 1/2 block east of Main St. and adjacent to the main north-south rail line, the property is occupied by the Ottesen Feed Mill, composed of one mill/elevator building, two warehouse buildings, two silos and an adjacent parking area.     The Fort Lupton Historic Preservation Board 2009 CALENDAR 711 Denver Avenue The Birthing House In 1903, W.J. Winbourn built the house on Denver Avenue for landowner John Corcoran as a boarding house. John, who served as the town’s well digger, also was Fort Lupton’s lamplighter. Since Mr. Corcoran also had plumbing expertise, the house on Denver Avenue probably was the first—or one of the first—houses in Fort Lupton to have modern plumbing. Home births were the norm as hospitals were few and far between. During the 1930s and 40s, many townspeople as well as people from surrounding towns in the valley (Wiggins, Roggen, Keenesburg, Hudson and Platteville) were born at one of the two birthing houses in Fort Lupton. The birthing house on Denver Avenue was run by a nurse, Mrs. Schallenberger. Mrs. Schallenberger’s maiden name was Bessie May Corcoran. Under other marriages she was known as Mrs. Winbourn and Mrs. Schallenberger-Funk. The other birthing house in town was operated by nurse Roberta Fellers. The house reverted back to a boarding house in the 50s and 60s. In the 70s, the house was a family home and a sewing shop. The house which still stands today is once again being used as a boarding house. The short-lived trading posts on the South Platte are pictured in operation. The chief actors, now almost legendary, are seen with their ox- and mule-drawn wagons, hauling and packing trade goods to supply their posts and conducting trade with the roving Indians. Mr. Smith takes us over the Santa Fe Trail from the outfitting point of Independence, Missouri, to Bent's Fort on the Arkansas. Then we travel northward over the divide and down the South Platte to the adobe trading post of Fort Vasquez, near present Platteville. Leaving wagons behind, we journey on horseback and with pack-laden mules over the mountains, across North Park, down the Little Snake and to Fort Davy Crockett in the favorite trapper winter resort of wall-encircled Brown's Hole on Green River. Then to escape reprisals from wronged Indians we face midwinter on the continental divide, hole up in drifted snow, and finally emerge with spring at the fort on the South Platte. Then on a mackinaw boat, fashioned from timbers hand-sawed at Fort Vasquez, we place our load of buffalo robes and tongues and commence our voyage down the shallow Platte. Stone at Pueblo, July 4, 18762 The object of the proclamation of the President of the United States in requesting the preparation of a historical sketch of each town and village in the United States, to be read on this Centennial Fourth of July and a copy to be filed in the public archiws as data for the future historian, is in every way wise and commendable. But in an outdoor, promiscuous assemblage, surrounded with all the existing circumstances attending the celebration, it is impossible to carry out the scope of the proclamation without making tedious what under other circumstances would only be interesting, and I shall, therefore, content myself with presenting a very brief outline of a few of the more interesting incidents of the earliest history of our city. The word Pueblo (Spanish ) means originally people; thence it came to be applied to various tribes or peoples of the conquered Indians of New Spain who lived chiefly in villages; afterwards the word became a generic term for a village in which people resided, and lastly made the name of a few particular towns, as is the case with ours. It is, however, pertinent to remark here that this city cf ours never was a Spanish or Mexican town in any sense, nor at any time in all its history.
