2017-2018 Annual Report 2017-2018 View
Founded in 1940, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) is the nation’s first civil and human rights law organization and has been completely separate from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) since 1957. From that era to the present, LDF’s mission has always been transformative: to achieve racial justice, equality, and an inclusive society. Adolph mounting threats, LDF remains equal to the task. This annual report is a testament to LDF’s remarkable success in and out of the courtroom. David W. Mills 1 message from the chairs of the board In 1978, LDF’s founder Thurgood Marshall said, “Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out, because this is your country. This is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on.” The NAACP Legal Defense Fund has been pursuing that mission since its founding. Through litigation and advocacy, LDF works to protect and preserve our democracy, so that its promises of liberty and justice can at last be made real for all Americans. -

This production is dedicated to Sam Shepard. A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR The Dance of Death has amazing significance to the whole world of contemporary drama. The "trapped" nature of its characters feels like Sartre's No Exit (and its classic line "Hell is other people"). And its foreshadow- ing of Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf is uncannily prescient, almost as if Albee "channeled" Strindberg in cooking up his own mixture of raucous verbal battle and deadly humor. -

WE STAND for DEMOCRACY. a Government of the People, by the People
A14 EZ RE the washington post . wednesday, april 14, 2021 EZ RE A15 ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT WE STAND FOR DEMOCRACY. A Government of the people, by the people. A beautifully American ideal, but a reality denied to many for much of this nation’s history. As Americans, we know that in our democracy we should not expect to agree on everything. However, regardless of our political affiliations, we believe the very foundation of our electoral process rests upon the ability of each of us to cast our ballots for the candidates of our choice. For American democracy to work for any of us, we must ensure the right to vote for all of us. We all should feel a responsibility to defend the right to vote and to oppose any discriminatory legislation or measures that restrict or prevent any eligible voter from having an equal and fair opportunity to cast a ballot. Voting is the lifeblood of our democracy and we call upon all Americans to join us in taking a nonpartisan stand for this most basic and fundamental right of all Americans.
