This is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on.” The NAACP Legal Defense Fund has been pursuing that mission since its founding. Through litigation and advocacy, LDF works to protect and preserve our democracy, so that its promises of liberty and justice can at last be made real for all Americans.

  • 'Grey's Anatomy' Star Talks About Black Representation in Media As Well As His Provocative Acceptance Speech at the 2016 BET Awards
Philip Martin Gallery At the opening of photographer Kwame Brathwaite's new show "Celebrity and the Everyday," the 'Grey's Anatomy' star talks about black representation in media as well as his provocative acceptance speech at the 2016 BET Awards Fans of Grey’s Anatomy grew concerned last month when the dashing Dr. Jackson Avery, played by Jesse Williams, vanished from the popular TV show for a few weeks, fueling speculation until his recent return. "I was off shooting a movie called Random Acts of Violence, and I'm back. Crisis of conscience, lost his child, lost his ex-wife, lost a patient, so ventured out into the woods and find himself, which I think men need to do more often. Let's call it a mental health angle," Williams said of 2712 S. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90034 philipmartingallery.com 310 559 0100 Philip Martin Gallery his disappearance when The Hollywood Reporter caught up with him at Philip Martin Gallery in Culver City where he introduced a new show, "Celebrity and the Everyday" (through Dec. 22), a collection of photos by 80-year-old photographer Kwame S. Brathwaite, co-curated by Williams and the artist's son, Kwame Jr. For more than 50 years Brathwaite has trained his lens on African-American subjects: Muhammad Ali in the Congo, seated alone in profile on a bench on a gray day by the water; a furrow-browed Bob Marley, guitar in hand, lost in thought during a sound check; or model Ethel Parks, a member of Grandassa Agency, featuring only African-American women and founded by Brathwaite and his brother, Elombe Brath, to challenge white beauty standards.

The "trapped" nature of its characters feels like Sartre's No Exit (and its classic line "Hell is other people"). And its foreshadow- ing of Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf is uncannily prescient, almost as if Albee "channeled" Strindberg in cooking up his own mixture of raucous verbal battle and deadly humor.

  • How Grey's Anatomy Fooled Me Into Thinking I Had Cancer
Intersect, Vol 13, No 2 (2020) How Grey’s Anatomy Fooled Me into Thinking I Had Cancer: A Conversation on the Uses of Empathy and Misinformation in Medical Dramas Neil Wary Stanford University Abstract It’s often hard to distinguish between fact and opinion, especially in today’s age of media. This becomes a controversial topic once the media disperses information that could potentially be harmful to the public, particularly involving medicine. In this essay, a patient case is used as motivation to understand the complex relationship between medical misinformation in the media and empathy. Following is a discussion of how misinformation and empathy work with the human mind, and how medical dramas use them to their advantage. Then, Grey’s Anatomy is used as a case study to see how the show implements empathy and misinformation. Finally, an analysis of the positives and negatives of the medical drama is presented along with suggestions of how to improve medical dramas – particularly looking at possible outcomes for positive change in this medium of communication. Wary, How Grey’s Anatomy Fooled Me Acknowledgements To Dr. Rebecca Richardson, Program in Writing and Rhetoric Professor at Stanford University, for helping with the preparation and revision of this manuscript. 2 Wary, How Grey’s Anatomy Fooled Me A 19-year-old male with no past medical history presents in clinic with tachycardia. The patient was scheduled for a stress echocardiogram to assess heart structure and function. In the initial ultrasound, however, a mass was found in the patient’s heart. The patient’s stress echocardiogram was cancelled, and the patient was referred to a cardiologist.
