NOTES ON THE FINANCIAL TIMES–ACTUARIES EQUITY SHARE INDICES IN 1989 BY J. C. H. BRUMWELL, M.A., F.I.A. ABSTRACT The process of updating company classificationscontinued. Seventy Index constituents were replaced during 1989,mostly as a result of takeovers, not quite a record. Only 46 replaced them, reflecting the difficulty in finding suitable new non-industrial constituents. The Mining Finance group was discontinued, but Engineering–Aerospaceand Water were introduced. Shipping & Transport was renamed Transport. KEYWORDS FT Actuaries Index; Ordinary Shares; London Market 1. Classification of Stock Exchange Securities by Industry The original classifications were set out in the 1970 note in this series (J.I.A. 97, 111–12). Subsequent amendments were set out in the notes for 1971–74, 1977, 1979–80 and 1983–88 (J.I.A. 97, 403; 99, 89; 100, 109; 101,199; 105, 85; 107, 81; 108, 85; 111, 203; 112, 87; 113, 173; 114, 143; 115, 333 and 116, 179). On 1 July 1989, a new category No. 21 (Aerospace) was introduced and 12 companies were reclassified in it from, with one exception, category No. 27 (Miscellaneous Mechanical Engineering). At the end of 1989, category No. 78 (Foreign Banks) was discontinued. All companies so classified joined category No. 77 (Banks), and the definition of the latter category was expanded additionally to include that of the former. The name of category No. 85, ‘Merchant Banks’, was simplified by dropping the words ‘and Issuing Houses’. Minor amendments were also made to the definitions of five categories during 1989. As a result of the quarterly meetings of the Classification Sub-Committee of the Joint Investment and Index Committee, the classifications of 56 companies were altered. -

The companies Lucas Industries plc, Solihull/UK ("Lucas"), and Varity Corporation, Buffalo, New York/USA ("Varity"), notified that they intend to enter into a full merger. Under the terms of the merger a new UK holding company, to be known as LucasVarity plc, will be created. The Lucas shareholders will own about 62% and the Varity shareholders about 38% of the new merged business. 2. The main objective has been to analyze the efficiency of such power trains to compare them with canoni- cal combustion engines, both in a tank-to-wheels basis and a well-to-wheels basis. One of the question formulations is if an electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle charged by public electricity generated by a fossil plant will result in any environmental alleviation at all, in excess of reducing the lo- cal tailpipe pollution. To establish reasonable figures about a car's energy consumption in dynamic drive cycles such as the NEDC and the US06, a comprehensive simulation model has been used. The simulation results are presented as an analysis of waste energy, directly leading to an estimation of the potential of hybrid electric locomotion as a method to save energy and thus fuel. To form an overview about the new emerging market of hybrid electric vehicles, some of the topical key power train components are briefly discussed; combustion engines, electric machines, supercapacitors and bat- teries. The overview is rounded off with a brief discussion about motives behind the popularity of hybrid propulsion as well as some economical as- pects from an end user point of view. -

INTRODUCTION This Corporate Plan was prepared by the Lucas Aerospace Combine Shop Stewards Committee for that section of Joseph Lucas Industries which is known as Lucas Aerospace. If a brief description of Lucas Industries is provided this gives an economic, technical and company background against which the performance and potential of its wholly owned subsidiary, Lucas Aerospace, can be viewed. It was also felt desirable to do so as some of the alternative products proposed elsewhere in this report, although emanating from aerospace technology, could more appropriately be handled, at the manufacturing stage, by production techniques and facilities available elsewhere in the Lucas organisations. Lucas Industries Ltd. Lucas Industries is a vast and complex organisation with design, development, manufacturing, sales and services activities in tl-te automotive, aerospace and industrial sectors of the economy. I The Company which was formed in 1877 now has some 80 000 employees and an annual turnover of approximately £300 000 000 and capital investment of £110 000 000. November-December 1991 Issue Number 135 EDITORIAL COMMENT Rare is the person who doesn't like a bit of praise now and then. I'm no exception, so I've been glad to hear the good words that many have said about the Society publications in the last few years. I hasten to add, though, that credit should go also to those who contribute feature material, photographs, even puzzling questions, for without all that input the Journals you read would be dull indeed. I was likewise buoyed by Matt Joseph's comments in his valedic tory president's message; I have striven to maintain the high quality standards set by my predecessors, and to introduce a comfortable level of innovation. I was intrigued, though, even bemused, to find that another of my virtues is in reminding others to do things ("gentle reminders," they're called, though I frequently became strident in my demands for news to print). Upon reflec ELECTION RESULTS ANNOUNCED tion, this seems less like a virtue than an awesome responsibility, keeping the wheels of administration turning. Put it down, perhaps, to the fact that long MARTIN HEADS SOCIETY lead journalists must always be preoccupied with the future. In the closing plaudits in the last issue I felt one officer received Jack L. Martin of Indianapolis, Indiana, was elected president of short shrift, and I ventured to say so, only to find that my words somehow the Society of Automotive Hi torians for the term October 1991 to October disappeared between the time the issue left my hands and when it emerged 1993. -

In this role, Dr. Smith is responsible for reinforcing AGCO’s leading market position in Europe and further expanding the company’s manufacturing footprint in Eastern Europe, Africa and Middle East. In particular, he leads AGCO’s efforts in developing the markets of Russia and Africa where AGCO sees significant growth potential in the agricultural equipment sector. Dr. Smith and his team are also responsible for improving AGCO’s distribution coverage and local assembly presence to leverage this immense growth potential. Dr. Smith has extensive international management experience and most recently was the Vice President & General Manager of the global Engine Components Division for TRW Automotive – one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers. He also was the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of TRW Automotive GmbH.
