1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Aga Khan University in Pakistan has retained Cielo Executive Search to lead the search process for the new Chair, Department of Paediatrics and Child Health. The overall responsibility of the Chair is to lead the Department to a position of academic and professional eminence, while furthering the goals and mission of the College of Medicine, and of the Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi. The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) works to improve the quality of life for tens of millions of people in 30 countries. 3. OVERVIEW – THE AGA KHAN UNIVERSITY

Over the last 35+ years, the Aga Khan University (AKU) has built a global reputation for its work to improve quality of life in developing societies through high-quality teaching, research and health-care delivery that reflects its core values of equity and pluralism. The Board of Trustees includes current and former leaders of such institutions as the University of California, San Francisco; the University of Toronto; and the American University in Cairo. Partners and supporters include the development agencies of Canada, France, Germany, the and the , as well as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Harvard Kennedy School and the University of Alberta. 4. OVERVIEW – THE MEDICAL COLLEGE, PAKISTAN

The Aga Khan University Medical College in Pakistan was established in 1983, as a part of the University’s Faculty of Health Sciences. The Medical College faculty has a tripartite mission of provision of quality patient care, creating new knowledge through research and educating the leaders of tomorrow.

Pakistan and other developing countries have unique challenges and AKU, being a first-world institution in a third-world setting, is in a singular position to help solve these problems through research and training. The research portfolio of the faculty is diverse and is spread across the basic sciences, translational, clinical and public health domains. The academic programs in the Medical College, which include undergraduate medical education and graduate programs (Masters, MPhil, PhD), attach great emphasis to the professional, personal and intellectual development of students, so that its graduates become contributory members and leaders of society, setting the benchmark for quality of care, developing innovative solutions to health challenges and providing policymakers with evidence-based recommendations.

The Aga Khan University Medical College works closely with the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the University Hospital to produce excellence in educational programmes and medical practice.

Research

Health related research has always been a high priority activity of AKU. For the Medical College (being a part of AKU’s Faculty of Health Sciences), the over-arching theme is 'Social and Economic Determinants of Health' (SEDOH), the current shorthand for describing health approaches that move beyond biomedical and behavioral risk factor approaches to health promotion. Research in AKU’s Medical College spans many disciplines but particularly emphasizes problems of the developing world, such as investigation of the causes and treatment of childhood diarrhea, studies of the immunological characteristics of tuberculosis and leprosy, genetic basis of disease within the Pakistani population and community-based health systems development. Faculty research can be either basic, translational or clinical.

The Medical College also has a Clinical Trials Unit dedicated to advance AKU’s research mandate.

The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), over the past three decades, has been a leader in delivering quality healthcare in the region, and has adapted to the rapidly changing and challenging healthcare needs of the people we serve. Demonstrating Quality and Excellence: Our quality standards are recognized through our accreditation by the Joint Commission International (JCI), the gold standard in quality and patient safety, and by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the gold standard in clinical laboratory testing. Training our Staff: We focus on training and developing our staff to improve and enhance their skills. This not only contributes to streamlining processes but also encourages them to enhance their practical skills to become leaders. Almost 40% of our workforce are females who make diligent contributions in different roles at the Main Hospital, Secondary Hospitals, Medical Centres, Clinical Laboratories and Pharmacies.

6. OVERVIEW – THE DEPARTMENT OF PAEDIATRICS AND CHILD HEALTH

The Department of Paediatrics and Child Health is committed to providing state-of-the-art high-quality clinical services to children & adolescent’s health. The Department consists of a group of dedicated and diverse full-time and part-time paediatric faculty.

The clinical services of the Children's Hospital are the second largest in the hospital and consist of 128 inpatient beds and spread over 13 locations. These include two general paediatric wards (with high dependency units, infection prevention units, and semi-private rooms). In addition there is an 8-bedded Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and a 4-bedded Paediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. Neonatal services include a 23-bedded Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and two well-baby nurseries.

Outpatient general and sub-specialty services are available at the main campus. In addition, community- outreach through the four secondary-care hospitals including both inpatient and outpatient services falls under the Department.

New services and specialties are continuously being developed and offered including Paediatric Palliative Care services and the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center.

Academic Programmes:

The Department has a robust academic portfolio with faculty involvement encompassing all levels of scholastic initiatives.

Paediatric Undergraduate Clerkship One of the most highly rated rotation by the Medical College students. It comprises of not only the hospital paediatrics rotation but also primary/secondary care rotation.

Paediatric Residency Program Highly rated by incumbent trainees not only in Karachi but all over Pakistan. It is also one of the largest programs in university having more than fifty residents, rotating in four different hospitals in two cities. Many of the alumni of program are now faculty in the department or in other academic institutions all over the world.

Fellowship Programs From the first neonatology fellowship to the most recent first endocrinology fellowship in Pakistan, the department has to its credit many national firsts including hematology-oncology, neurology, infectious diseases and critical care. In addition to these there is also a robust cardiology fellowship being offered by the department. Most of these are accredited by College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) for FCPS training.

Graduate Programs and Other Course Educational Endeavors Departmental faculty is deeply involved in various graduate programs offered by the university like Masters programs in Epidemiology& Biostatistics, Health Policy & Management, Health Professions Education, MPhil in Biological and Biomedical Sciences and PhD in Health Sciences.

The faculty offers research methodology course every year for its trainees in addition to many short courses and workshops on manuscript writing, systematic reviews etc. Faculty is also actively involved in CME and CPD activities at national and international levels.

Research:

Research is a particular strength of the Department. Over the past five years, the Departmental faculty secured extramural grants in excess of $82 million. The major funders include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Gavi Alliance, NIH USA, CDC USA, UNICEF, WHO, Wellcome Trust and others. The focus is on community-oriented research of public health importance, and the major topics covered include malnutrition, infectious diseases particularly vaccine preventable diseases, neonatal health, and others.

The Department along with the affiliated Center of Excellence of Women and Child Health manages various community field sites across the country and also has infectious diseases and nutrition labs that support the field-based research. There is a broad base of faculty scientists, with more than 15 faculty receiving extramural grants in the past five years. The Department collaborates heavily with other Departments within the University and with outside institutions in its research, both national and international.

7. POSITION DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Chair, Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Reports to: Dean, Medical College, Chief Executive Officer, AKUH (Pakistan) and Divisional Chair, Women and Child Health

Location: Karachi, Pakistan

The Chair has overall responsibility for the conduct of the academic mandate of the department, consistent with the mission and policies of the Aga Khan University and the Aga Khan University Hospital, inclusive of the outreach facilities incorporated within AKU.

Specific Responsibilities:

Faculty ▪ Develop a departmental staffing and recruitment plan to fulfill the academic goals of the department. Consultation and agreement with the Service Line Chief for service-related plans and with Section Heads regarding academic plans is required. ▪ Establish a letter of expectations for each faculty member. The expectations for education and research should be based on the overall departmental plans for these areas, while the service expectations will be provided by the SLC. ▪ Conduct performance appraisals for faculty members and use input from SLCs regarding service performance and Section Heads for academic performance. ▪ Provide career counseling and promote career development for faculty members. Identify professional training and development requirements in consultation with Section Heads and SLC for Faculty Development Awards. ▪ Prepare dossiers for appointments, promotions and credentialing/privileging of faculty for approval by the concerned authorities.

Academic Goals ▪ Set a strong academic tone in all activities of the Department through organizing rounds, conferences, journal clubs, research seminars and bench training. ▪ Promote innovation regarding teaching methods and research methodologies.

▪ Place an emphasis on undergraduate medical education and appoint and support a person responsible for undergraduate medical education. Rotation in the hospital of undergraduate students and interns will be coordinated with the SLC. Apply curriculum and PMDC guidelines. ▪ Foster postgraduate medical education by appointing persons responsible for residency and fellowship training. ▪ Foster continuing education in coordination with the Department of Continuing Professional Education. ▪ Prepare a strategic research and teaching plan (four-year scope) for the Department and the departments/sections and define that in an annual plan for faculty in the LoE's. Foster research development by recruiting researchers within the resources available. Develop a grant acquisition plan for the department. ▪ Be an advocate for the Department in University and Faculty affairs. The Chair is expected to attend the Medical College Faculty Council and Joint Staff Committee meetings and other committees of the University as required.

Service Goals ▪ Ensure the development and application of medical quality management methods within the department, including practice guidelines and audits. ▪ Support the CEO and SLC(s) to ensure that the annual business plans and budgets are developed according to the Service Line objectives and application of quality management methods within the Service Line, including practice guidelines and audits. ▪ Support the development of new services and initiatives that contribute to the financial sustainability of the hospital. ▪ Collaborate in constructive participation in the hospital's goals and initiatives. ▪ Establish effective risk management principles and a patient satisfaction feedback evaluation system. ▪ Foster good professional and working relationships and partnerships with other departments and service lines. ▪ Foster good relations with community physicians and other organizations in the community. ▪ Ensure the productive and cost-effective use of human, material and capital resources entrusted to the department. ▪ Attend the Joint Staff Committee, Credentials Committee and other hospital committees as appropriate.

8. CITY/COUNTRY OVERVIEW

KARACHI

Karachi is one of the most dynamic and cosmopolitan cities in Asia and is also known as the "City of Lights" and "The Bride of the Cities." With a population of approximately 16 million, Karachi is the largest and most populous city in Pakistan and the capital of the province of Sindh. It is Pakistan's premier industrial and financial centre, in addition to being considered as the cultural, economic, philanthropic, educational and political hub of the country. Situated on the Arabian Sea, Karachi serves as a transport hub, and is home to Pakistan's two largest seaports, the Port of Karachi and Port Bin Qasim. It also is the site of Pakistan's busiest airport, Jinnah International Airport.

Karachi is the most linguistically, ethnically, and religiously diverse city in Pakistan. It is a melting pot of ethno-linguistic groups from throughout Pakistan, as well as migrants from other parts of Asia. Nearly half of the population speak as their first language, with Punjabi and Pashto the second most common languages. Many people also speak English, particularly those in the younger generations and workers in the financial and business districts. Karachiites adhere to numerous sects and sub-sects of Islam, as well as Protestant Christianity, and community of Goan Catholics. The city also is home to large numbers of Hindus, and a small community of Zoroastrians.

The most important historical sites in Karachi are the hundred-year old tombs located in the Chowkandi graveyard, as well as many buildings from the Raj era, including the , and Sindh High Court and . Karachi has many beautiful beaches, parks and coastal mangrove forests. The city is also home to some of Pakistan's most important cultural and artistic institutions and events, such as The National Academy of Performing Arts, the National Museum of Pakistan, Mohatta Palace and the Karachi Literature Festival. Shopping in Karachi is an enjoyable experience, since the city holds a complex network of malls having branded imported and local products, as well as small flea markets selling local traditional crafts. Located close to Karachi are the historic city of Thatta, Kirthar National Park, Keenjhar Lake, Haleji Lake Wildlife Sanctuary, Makli necropolis, Sufi shrine of Bhit Shah and archaeological site of Kot Diji.

With its location on the coast, the climate in Karachi remains generally mild and pleasant throughout the year. There are two seasons, with a relatively long summer season which includes the monsoon rains from July to September, followed by a drier and cooler winter period over December and January. PAKISTAN

Renowned for its love of cricket and breath-taking mountains, Pakistan is a historically rich country that has shown considerable economic progress since its independence in 1947. Officially known as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Pakistan translates to 'Land of the Pure'. It is the sixth most populous country in the world, with a population of over 200 million at an average annual growth of 2.4 percent, of which over 31 per cent are aged between 15 and 29.

Pakistan has a 1,046-kilometre coastline along the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman in the south and is bordered by India to the east, Afghanistan to the west, Iran to the southwest, and China in the northeast. It occupies a geopolitically important location at the crossroads of South Asia, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

Pakistan is an ethnically and linguistically diverse country, with a similarly diverse geography and wildlife. The country consists of an assortment of cultures and traditions, introduced through the numerous kingdoms, empires and dynasties that have ruled Pakistan throughout its history.

More than sixty languages are spoken in the country. Urdu is the national language understood by over 75% of Pakistanis. Both Urdu and English are the official languages of Pakistan, with English primarily used in official business and government, and in legal contracts. Regional and provincial languages include Sindhi, Punjabi, Pashto and Baluchi.

Pakistan’s landscape is blessed with picturesque mountains, green valleys, snowcapped peaks and lakes and pristine beaches; on the other end of the spectrum, the more metropolitan areas and cities are dynamic and busy. Within Pakistan's landscape there are the flat fertile flood plains of Punjab and Sindh provinces, nurtured by the Indus, which is the country's longest river and a key water resource. Pakistan's northern highlands contain the Karakoram, Hindu Kush, and Pamir mountain ranges, with some of the world's highest peaks. These include K2, the second highest mountain the world, and five of the fourteen mountain peaks over 8,000 metres, which attract adventurers and mountaineers from all over the world. Pakistan's largest and least populated province is Baluchistan situated on the Baluchistan Plateau in the south and west.
