Our museum is thus still a relative newcomer on the international scene. Nonetheless, in this fairly short period, the Van Gogh Museum has established itself as one of the liveliest institutions of its kind, with a growing reputation for its collections, exhibitions and research programmes. The past year has been marked by particular success: the Van Gogh and Gauguin exhibition attracted record numbers of visitors to its Amsterdam venue. And in this Journal we publish our latest acquisitions, including Manet's The jetty at Boulogne-sur-mer, the first important work by this artist to enter any Dutch public collection. En la era Meiji (1868-1912), los pintores japoneses de estilo occidental pusieron el foco de atención en Francia como modelo pictórico. Paralelamente, la revalorización del Greco comenzó en Francia y fue extendiéndose progresivamente por Europa. En el presente trabajo se trata de mostrar el itinerario histórico en el que los pintores japoneses conocieron al Greco a través de sus contemporáneos franceses, llegando a interpretar las obras del Greco en su propio contexto. Palabras clave: El Greco, Suda Kunitarō, Shirakaba, Museo de Arte Ohara. Abstract: The Ohara Museum of Art in Japan preserves The Annunciation by El Greco, which was purchased on 1922 in Paris. During the Meiji era (1868-1912), the Japanese painters with western style focused their attention on France as a pictorical reference. At the same time, the re-evaluation of El Greco began in France and gradually was spread throughout Europa. This paper attempts to show the historical itinerary in which those Japanese painters discovered El Greco through their contemporary French painters and, finally, came to interpret El Greco’s works by their own context. Sifuentes-Jáuregui This dissertation explores Paul Gauguin's Noa Noa (“fragrant” in Tahitian), a fictionalized “memoir” of his first journey to French Polynesia, which includes a transformative episode recounting a trip into the forest to collect wood for carving into sculptures. In Gauguin scholarship, this episode has provoked speculation because of the eroticized way in which the artist describes his relationship with his young Tahitian male guide on the expedition; several scholars have argued that this episode of Noa Noa is designed to trouble conventional bourgeois boundaries, while others have offered sharp postcolonial critiques. I offer a different reading of this episode, arguing that the forest journey in Noa Noa replays the journey to the cedar forest in the myth of Gilgamesh, and that the artist’s transplantation of this ancient Assyrian epic to a Polynesian setting adds a ii new layer to our understanding of the transnational and transhistorical nature of Gauguin's primitivism.

In 1937, she leaved Italy for Paris and met André Breton and the Surrealists. Inspired by their theories, she experimented the « automatic drawing ». She beccame a friend of Georges Bataille, Victor Brauner, Paul Éluard and Max Ernst without integrating the group. Her first monographic exhibiition took place in New York, in 1939. Leonor Fini realized many portraits (Jacques Audiberti, Jean Genet, Anna Magnani), costumes for theater, ballet and opera. She also illustrated texts by Marcel Aymé (La Vouivre), Edgar 1 Leonor Fini (1908-1996) Poe, The Marquis de Sade (History of Juliette, 1945). Many poets, writers, painters and critics dedicated her monographs, essays or poems as Jean Cocteau, Giorgio De Chirico, Éluard, Ernst, Alberto Moravia... In the mid 40's, ihe studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris, and was a student of Nicolas Untersteller and Demetrios Galanis. His life in Montmartre definitively left a mark on his work. Moretti would come everyday on la place du Tertre, at la Crémaillère, meeting point for young people, portraitists, guitar players, chess players, but also dansers who were coming to party in the evening, as well as lovers huging in the inside yard.

    Museum & Society, 12 (2) 65 Embodied discourse in the bourgeois museum: performative spaces at the Ordrupgaard collection Rasmus Kjærboe* Abstract In a suburb just north of Copenhagen is Ordrupgaard. At the inauguration in 1918, it was arguably the best collection of impressionism open to the public outside France and the USA. This paper has two goals: First, to reconstruct and analyze the important yet little known original exhibition ensemble at Ordrupgaard, and second, to develop a view of the bourgeois art exhibition as a performative ritual. Building on ideas of exhibition narratives and visitor involvement derived from diverse work done within museology and museum studies, the paper proposes a close examination of how collective memory and performative embodiment drive exhibition experience. From this, Ordrupgaard emerges as an early example of a museum that offers its audience the possibility of a pleasurable enactment of middle class identity within a setting encompassing nature, art and architecture. The case of a small collection museum therefore reveals important mechanics at work within a potentially much larger field of institutions. Let us say it is a nice summer day circa 1919. The destination is a mansion on the edge of the large forest of beeches and oaks.
