The year 2011 was another busy and productive year for ISIS Malaysia. Important new international initiatives like the Conference on Global Movement for Justice, Peace and Dignity were launched and additional programmes relevant to national policies at home were also implemented.

The Institute was able to add to its skills and talent pool during the year by recruiting additional research staff. Recognising the critical importance of brain power to a think tank operating in the national, regional and wider international stage, ISIS continues to search for top class expertise that is within its financial capacity.

2011 has been another productive year for ISIS Malaysia, with major noteworthy events. It is with great pleasure and pride that I outline some of them below:

In February, ISIS Malaysia, in collaboration with the International Movement for a Just World (JUST) Malaysia, and the Civilization Studies Center (MEDAM), organized a conference in Istanbul themed Justice, Peace and Dignity. The keynote speakers were The Hon Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak and The Hon Ali Babacan, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey. The conference and in particular Prime Minister Najib’s contribution were widely broadcast by BBC in its World Debate series.

ISIS Praxis Seminar 2011: Knowledge for Action in the Coming Year 3 March 2011, Renaissance Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

This inaugural ISIS Praxis Seminar, themed ‘Knowledge for Action in the Coming Year,’ aimed to provide participants with information-rich analyses and views, in an interactive environment, to assist them in the areas of corporate planning and growth strategies.

The topics discussed were: • Is the world on the brink of a currency war, inflation, or a sovereign debt crisis? Understanding QE2, capital flows and the real economy 2011; • Critical innovative technology and industrial trends today; PRAXIS Seminar Role Players • Expanding amidst contraction? 25th Asia-Pacific Roundtable 30 May – 1 June, Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

ISIS Malaysia’s signature event, the Asia-Pacific Roundtable, celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2011. It attracted more than 350 security experts, policy- makers, scholars, researchers and journalists, from 30 countries across the Asia-Pacific region.

The Roundtable was opened by The Hon Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin who delivered the Keynote Address entitled, ‘Reflections on Southeast Asia and the Broader Region.’

A total of 61 role players made presentations, covering issues such as China’s foreign policy, water security, the naval arms race, the Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality (Zopfan); ADMM Plus; the future of North Korea; and the political puzzle of Participants of the 25th APR Thailand.

The Forum with the theme ‘Youth of Malaysia: Uniting the Nation’ provided a venue for the youth to share and discuss their visions for the country’s future.
