TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The new micro-dolichopodid genus Haromyia gen. nov. and the type species H. iviei sp. nov. are described from the island of Dominica in the Lesser Antilles. Males and females of Haromyia are distinguished by the large setae on a bulging clypeus, minute size, and wing veins that are nearly straight and evenly diverging from wing base. Haromyia does not fit readily into any contemporary dolichopodid subfamily, although it superficially resembles the Enliniinae and Achalcinae. Haromyia should be regarded as incertae sedis until the dolichopodid subfamilies can be refined, particularly to better incorporate the tropical diversity of this large family. Three new genera, Cryptopygiella Robinson, Dominicomyia Robinson, Micromedetera Robinson, and 69 new species were described in that work (Robinson 1975). -

Griphomyia gen. nov. with G. gravicaudata sp. nov. as type species, is described from rainforest in soutbem Thailand. Although it possesses a stalked hypopygium wh ich is considered as an ancestral feature, the presence of symmetrically sclerotized pseudotracheae, denticulate epipha ryngeal prongs, and a wing boss, ali indicate that the new genus is qui te derived. The morphology of the male genitalia places it rather in the Peloropeodinae with encapsulated hypopygiwn thau in the Sympycninae with an apical, sessile hypopygiurn. Key words: Diptera, Griphomyia n. gen, Thailand. INTRODUCTION The empidoid fatma ofSouthAsia is very poorly k:nown. As an example only 9 species of Dolichopodidae have been reported up to now from Thailand (DYTE, 1975), a figme which should be at !east 50 times higher. lt is not surprising, therefore, that even small col lections yield numerous undescribed taxa. The present study is a first contribution to the dolichopodjd fauna of Thailand. Here we describe a new species belonging to a new genus. The stalked male genitalia would at first suggest that the genus is medeterine but examination of the mouthparts and other somatic characters shows that it is not. In fact considering the indistinct delineation of many subfamilies (ROBINSON, 1970 ; ULRICH, 1980), it is very difficult to place. -

Altogether, 1,564 species taxa (identifi ed at least to the genus level) from 25 orders of Hexapoda have been recorded from the Socotra Archipelago to date. In addition, members of Diplura and Ephemeroptera are known from the archipelago as well, but they have not been identifi ed so far. The most speciose order in Socotra are beetles (Coleoptera) with 540 species. The total number of endemic taxa described from the archipelago is 662 species, which represents 42% of all known species. The vast majority of species is known from the main Socotra Island (1,520 species, 635 endemic taxa). The diversity of insects in Socotra is briefl y commented on and compared with the nearest archipelago – the Seychelles. Key words. The collection was started by Dr. L.H. Hale during 1970, and was resurrected and expanded from 1979 due to the foresight and energy of Dr “Jack” Tenorio, who also contributed a great number of specimens. Originally the collection was intended as an insect collection to assist identification of insects affecting agriculture, horticulture and silviculture in the Northern Marianas, and to contribute to the ability of pupils and students to learn more about the subject. During 2001 the collection was expanded to include all terrestrial and freshwater invertebrates, and a collection management protocol was established (see Appendices 1 and 2). The collection was originally owned by the CNMI Department of Land and Natural Resources , and was on loan to the NMC Entomology Unit for curation. During 2001 it was transferred to the NMC by agreement with Dr. “Jack” Tenorio, who emphasized the need to maintain separate teaChing material as well as identified specimens in the main collection. -

Silva Balcanica, 17(2)/2016 Forestry AND riparian lonG-LEGGED FLIES (DIPTERA: DOLICHOPODIDAE) from SARNENA SREDNA GORA Mountain WITH new records FOR BULGARIA Mihail Kechev University of Agribusiness and Rural Development, Bulgarian Scientific Selection-Technical Union - Plovdiv Abstract Thirty four dolichopodid flies were collected from six localities in Sarnena Sredna Gora Mountain, Bulgaria. Two species (Peloropeodes acuticornis (Oldenberg) and Neurigona erichsoni (Zetterstedt)) are new to the fauna of Bulgaria. Peloropeodes acuticornis is new to the Balkan Peninsula. Two other species previous described from Bulgaria (Teuchophorus chaetifemoratus Pollet et Kechev and T. medovoensis Kechev, Negrobov et Grichanov) are found in this survey and another localities for the country are given. Two dolichopodids are dominant in this region – Hercostomus gracilis (Stannius) (35.2%) and Poecilobothrus regalis (Meigen, 1824) (14.8%). The information over two-year survey is summarized in the faunistic list. Dolichopodid diversity is discussed and tabled together with previous investigation of Omurovska River. Key words: Dolichopodidae, Sarnena Sredna Gora Mountain, Omurovska River, Bulgaria Introduction Family Dolichopodidae, also called long-legged flies, is one of the most abundant families of true flies with more than 7200 described species worldwide. Most of them within the family are predators and dwell aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats. Relatively well studied regions in Bulgaria are Northern Black Sea Coast (Beschovski 1964, 1967, 1971, 1973), the Western Rhodopes (Kechev, 2007; 2010) and the Upper Thracian Plain (Kechev, 2012a, b; Kechev, Ivanova, 2015). The main purpose of this work is to investigate the dolichopodid diversity of poorly studied area such as Sarnena Sredna Gora Mountain and to complete the list of known species of Omurovska River. -

Keys are provided, and the key to Chrysosoma includes all described Micronesian, Polynesian, and eastern Melanesian species. I Introduction The family Dolichopodidae is well represented in collections from Micro nesia, and more than 3,000 specimerts are available for study. The fauna is rich and comprises both endemic and witlespread species. Proper study of the Micronesia~ fauna requires a good knowledge of the described Australasian and Oriental faunas. However, many dolichopodid species cannot be identified without ready acbess to type material. As well, genera within many subfamilies are poorly defined. For these reasons, the family will not be considered as a whole as is custom~ry for the "Insects of Micronesia." Only 3 subfamilies (Sciapodinae, Medeterinae, Sympycninae (in part» are treated here. These have been the subject of rece*t regional revisions (Bickel 1987, 1994) or comprise well-defined genera in the region (Negrobov, 1975). The remaining Sympycninae and the subfamilies, Diaphorinae, Dolichopodinae, and Hydro phorinae, will be treated in a future iwork (I have not seen Micronesian Babin- dellinae).
