You are going to tell your story as song lyrics. Write 4 verses in ABAB rhyming form (traditional ballad). See the example: I love to drive my car, I drive it very fast. It takes me very far, Driving is a blast! All verses must focus on the same theme/event and use the same rhyming format. Watch the video of a true event - Gordon Lightfoot - Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - as an example of a modern style ballad. Choice Board #2: Create a Melody A two part song or instrumental piece is called a binary form (AB form). It has an A section - usually called a verse, and a B section - called a chorus/refrain. Pick a theme or topic - write 2 different verses and one chorus(the B section will repeat between the verses) about your theme. ABAB Watch the following video clip Home on the Range Home on the Range - a traditional American folk song which is written in AB (binary) form. Use the Chrome Music Lab link to write 2 different melodies - one for the verse, another for the chorus. https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Song-Maker/ Record your song and send your work to your music teacher. Choice Board #3: Design an Album Cover You will be connecting art and music to graphically design your original album cover. Check out the following link: Design an Album Cover Follow the directions given in the project and don’t be afraid to be creative! When you have finished your project submit your work to your music teacher. Choice Board #4: Create your Album You are going to plan your first album! When piecing it all together, there are a lot of things you need to plan: 1) Your album title (what is the best title for what you are trying to portray) 2) How many songs will your album contain, and what are the names of each song 3) What genre would your music be associated with (Rock, Hip-hop, R&B, Pop, etc) 4) What would your instrumentation be (what instruments would you need for the entire album and/or individual songs 5) Where would you go to record your album? Once you have planned out your album, submit your work to your music teacher. Choice Board #5: See the Sound Sound vibrations travel through air, water, and even solid objects, but it is not possible to see the waves. What if we could see the waves in another way? This science of sound experiment makes sound more visible by forcing objects to react to the sound vibrations. Supplies Needed: 1) Empty clear mixing bowl 2) Plastic wrap 3) Large rubber band 4) Sugar crystals (Sugar in the Raw works great) Steps to seeing Sound Waves: 1) Wrap a sheet of plastic wrap over the mixing bowl so that it is tight, and secure with the large rubber band. Be sure that the plastic wrap is tight and does not sag. 2) Place a few of the sugar crystals on the top of the plastic wrap, placing them in the middle of the wrap. 3) Get close to the sugar crystal and say something loudly! What happens to the crystals? Did they move? 4) Experiment with louder and softer words or sentences to watch the sugar crystals react to the sound vibrations Write down what you observed with sound waves and how loud and soft sounds react to the crystals. Either write down your findings and email them, or record yourself discussing your experiment and submit it to your music teacher. Choice Board #6: 12 Bar Blues A 12-bar blues is divided into three four-bar segments. A standard blues progression, or sequence of notes (melody/lyrics) typically features three chords based on the first (written as I), fourth (IV), and fifth (V) notes of an eight-note scale. The I chord dominates the first four bars; the IV chord typically appears in the second four bars and the V chord is played in the third four bars. Think of the music you hear, like and enjoy. Songs can tell a story or be written more figuratively so the meaning is left open to the listener. Listen to these examples to give you an idea. You can get as complex or as simple as you desire. Approach the songs like. Bo Diddley “Who Do You Love” Bo Diddley B.B King and Stevie Wonder “The Thrill is Gone” B.B. King and Stevie Wonder This is a backing track you can use to sing over if you want to do a slower Blues Slow Blues Guitar Backing Choice Board #7: Write a Parody A parody song uses the original music of a song but changes the words to make it funny. Watch the video of Weird Al Yankovic’s parody of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” Weird Al Yankovic Parody Michael Jackson -- Beat It Choose a song you know - a folk song, children’s song , nursery rhyme, etc. Rewrite the words of the song using your own funny ones! Make sure the words fit the rhythm and melody of the original song. When you are finished, submit your parody as a Word or Google document to your music teacher. Choice Board #8: You’ve Got Talent! FOX is looking for a new music television show and they heard YOU have an amazing idea! A show that is completely different than any other music show on television. You are going to pitch your idea to the executives at Fox for your big break! Your music television pitch should include: 1) The name of your show 2) How it is different than all other music shows on television (currently or in the past) 3) How auditions will be held 4) What the final prize will be 5) What will keep audiences engaged and coming back for more 6) Why your show is the next big idea 7) Create a jingle/theme music for the show’s opening Submit your completed work to your music teacher.
