    Personalization of political newspaper coverage: a longitudinal study in the Dutch context since 1950 Ellis Aizenberg, Wouter van Atteveldt, Chantal van Son, Franz-Xaver Geiger VU University, Amsterdam This study analyses whether personalization in Dutch political newspaper coverage has increased since 1950. In spite of the assumption that personalization increased over time in The Netherlands, earlier studies on this phenomenon in the Dutch context led to a scattered image. Through automatic and manual content analyses and regression analyses this study shows that personalization did increase in The Netherlands during the last century, the changes toward that increase however, occurred earlier on than expected at first. This study also shows that the focus of reporting on politics is increasingly put on the politician as an individual, the coverage in which these politicians are mentioned however became more substantive and politically relevant. Keywords: Personalization, content analysis, political news coverage, individualization, privatization Introduction When personalization occurs a focus is put on politicians and party leaders as individuals. The context of the news coverage in which they are mentioned becomes more private as their love lives, upbringing, hobbies and characteristics of personal nature seem increasingly thoroughly discussed. An article published in 1984 in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf forms a good example here, where a horse race betting event, which is attended by several ministers accompanied by their wives and girlfriends is carefully discussed1. Nowadays personalization is a much-discussed phenomenon in the field of political communication. These values have made Europe objectively one of the best places for its citizens to live and to thrive. Membership of the EU has served to inspire Member States to foster these values to the fullest. In the process, the European community has evolved into a political entity with democratic institutions to safeguard and promote the values we cherish, namely through our directly elected European Parliament, which in tum elects the European Commission. Furthermore, democratically elected governments back the members of your Council. There still are however, flaws in the democratic fabric of our ever-evolving Union. Today we urge you and your Council to address one of these flaws. A European Union that values equality between the citizens that make up our society should have institutions that reflects those values. Currently the Act concerning the election of the members of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage is limiting citizens' representation in the European Parliament, where their Members exercise their right to maternity, paternity or parental leave during the latter stages of pregnancy or following the birth of a child. Not only are such limitations creating a democratic deficit for some European citizens but they further undermine the core European tenet of gender equality, with the majority of Members affected being pregnant and post-natal women.

We call for an EU budget that strengthens economic, social and territorial cohesion. The Commission wants to spend more money on “Fortress Europe” and on economic stimulus programmes for military corporations. It wants to make cuts to the Cohesion Policy and the Social Fund from which all citizens and regions benefit. The Council must call on the Commission to end austerity and reduce the wealth gap between poor and rich regions. Member states still disagree with the reform of asylum and migration policies and still are not supporting the southern European countries. The proposed compromise of the Bulgarian Presidency does not solve the problem. Without more solidarity, without a fair redistribution of refugees, and without safe and legal access, the EU is failing to comply with its human rights obligations. Debate: Tuesday Dennis De Jong - Debate with the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte Prime Minister Rutte is well known for his saying that to have a vision one needs to go to the eye doctor. But this is just a smokescreen: the vision he advocates is purely neoliberal and pri- oritises the interests of multinational companies. Het referendum dat de journalistiek niet wilde ABSTRACT In verschillende Europese landen vindt in het voorjaar van 2016 een referendum plaats. De Nederlandse kiezer mag naar de stembus voor een raadgevend referendum over het associatieverdrag tussen de Europese Unie en Oekraïne. Nederland kent geen grote referendumtraditie en daarom is er ook nog weinig bekend over hoe de Nederlandse media over een referendum berichten. Dit geldt overigens niet alleen voor Nederland, want vergeleken met verkiezingen is er nog relatief weinig onderzoek gedaan naar hoe de media een referendumcampagne verslaan, terwijl journalisten bij een referendum een veel belangrijkere taak hebben in het informeren van de kiezer. Dit komt doordat referenda vaak over Europese verdragen gaan waar burgers, journalisten en soms zelf politici weinig voorkennis over hebben. Daarbij gaat het Oekraïne-referendum ook nog eens over een land waar de Nederlandse media in het verleden weinig aandacht voor hadden. Deze studie vindt het daarom relevant om inzicht te krijgen in hoe de media over dit referendum berichten en hoe die berichtgeving tot stand komt. Via een kwantitatieve inhoudsanalyse analyseert deze studie het brongebruik, de aard van de berichtgeving en de gebruikte argumenten, terwijl via interviews inzicht wordt verkregen in de overwegingen van journalisten. Uit de resultaten van deze studie kan de conclusie worden getrokken dat de journalisten veel informatie geven over het referendumonderwerp.

This is an intolerable situation in an EU where so much wealth has been amassed. During the Porto Social Summit governments pushed for many policies but when it came to taking decisive action to fight poverty and generate employment they remained toothless. The digital and ecological transitions are major challenges that require the EU to have social policy at the heart of its daily action.     EU ELECTIONS Factsheet: MEPs that voted FOR NATURE in the COMMON FISHERIES POLICY TECHNICAL CONSERVATION MEASURES (TCM) REGULATION INFO In 2016, the European Commission made a proposal to establish new fishing rules in europe. These rules range from the mesh size of the net to to limit fishers from catching baby fish, to temporal closures to limit the impact of fishing on marine ecosystems (such as when seabirds are bycaught). On 16th January 2018, the European parliament voted on this file. Below we provide voting information on 4 key amendments that provide indication whether Members of the European voted for strengthening of the protection of marine ecosystems or on the contrary. Vote on AM 83 (Approved 358 in favour, 314 against, 5 abstained) This amendment changed the definition of driftnets to allow for semi-driftneting (when there is an anchor attached to the bottom of the net). Semi-driftnets are a major problem for the marine environment and by changing this definition, it doesn’t ban them from being used in particular in the Baltic and Mediterranean. Many marine species are bycaught in driftnets, including semi-driftnets. MEPs who voted in favour (+) of this amendment voted for the dilution of the definition and hence supported for increased number of marine species to drown in fishing gear (driftnets). 2. Vote on AM 295 (Not approved 175 in favour, 454 against, 43 abstained) This amendment set a quantifiable target that within 5 years, the bycatch of juvenile fish would be reduced by 50%.
