The Russian Tradition: Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10 AT 8:00 P.M. Tchaikovsky had great respect for the conventions of writing for ballet, but his ballet scores, of which Swan Lake was the first, are also masterpieces of orchestral writing. Of course, the ballet was meant to accompany the power of the music, which is often subsumed in the beauty of the dance. This concert will provide an opportunity to enjoy this music for its own sake. With his revolutionary score, The Rite of Spring, Igor Stravinsky created an unforgettable musical panorama of primitive Russia and its intimate and sometimes savage relationship with nature. Maestro David LaMarche, the highly acclaimed conductor of the world renowned American Ballet Theatre, brings the experience of countless performances with the most famous ballet dancers of our time to create his own unique interpretation of these great works.

Dvorak and Brahms MARCH 24, 2018 AT 8:00 P.M. Brahms and Dvorak had very different styles of composition, but they shared an esthetic of warm orchestral colors, deep emotion, and classical proportions. Brahms had great admiration for his younger colleague and was instrumental in establishing his reputation. The Second Symphony of Brahms is a towering masterpiece of optimism and was an instant success from its premiere in 1877. The Cello Concerto in B minor of Dvorak is one of the great romantic concertos, and remains to this day a touchstone of the cello repertoire. The extraordinary cellist, Sarah Miller, will dazzle you with her performance. Featuring: Sarah Miller, Violoncello and Scott Jackson Wiley, Music Director & Conductor Event Calendar
