The Rita Williams Popular Song Collection A Handlist A wide-ranging collection of c. 4000 individual popular songs, dating from the 1920s to the 1970s and including songs from films and musicals. Originally the personal collection of the singer Rita Williams, with later additions, it includes songs in various European languages and some in Afrikaans. Rita Williams sang with the Billy Cotton Club, among other groups, and made numerous recordings in the 1940s and 1950s. The songs are arranged alphabetically by title. So sang an Irish poet (Ó Baoighill and Ó Baoill, 17-18, my translation) and such, indeed, is the reputation our Saint enjoys in the tradition of Ireland’s most northerly county, Donegal, ‘Generous Columba’, is how another song (Goan, 19) describes him, for gifts and bounty were ever a part of his image there. It was believed, moreover, that this was a gift the Saint had especially asked God for: ‘You have given me sufficient but you didn’t give me a heart to spend it.’ ‘So long as the sun is in the sky,’ the Saviour replied, ‘the generous will never go to hell.’ (Watson, 99; my translation). -

ammer was the first film production company to exploit the ‘adults only’ X certificate for the purpose of horror entertainment. Not that everybody in late H1950s Britain saw the company’s innovative brand of Grand Guignol as entertainment. Detached eyeballs, severed limbs and splashes of Eastmancolor gore were eminently censorable, leaving some films so compromised that modern audiences struggle to see what all the fuss was about. The film’s scores, however, usually escaped the attention of those who struggled to keep up with the pace of cultural change. Hammer’s production design was noted for its elegance, and the actors the company employed were commendably understated, but composers and conductors usually appreciated that there was little call for subtlety in Hammer’s underlying approach. The posters proclaimed that these films were designed to shock, and as soon as the house lights dimmed it was the job of the theme music to heighten that anticipation. In the early years of Hammer horror the scores commissioned by John Hollingsworth and written by the prolific James Bernard were bombastic, doom- laden affairs, establishing Bernard’s trademark of echoing the syllables of the film’s title in the musical phrasing of the theme. The most famous example of this approach can be heard in the score for Dracula (1958), elements of which would be reprised numerous times up to and including The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires (1974). Bernard’s association with Hammer typecast him in the eyes of the snobbish film establishment, but under the baton of Hollingsworth’s successor, Philip Martell, he would prove his versatility with more lyrical themes for She (1965) and Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970). -

Bill Wrobel’s DVD Collection, Review & Music Analysis A man is often known by the company he keeps. I suppose this applies not only to people routinely around him but also to the specific kinds of music and dvds he purchases as a personal collection to enjoy. As John Burroughs wrote in his poem, Waiting : “My own shall come to me.” This is the law of attraction (like attracts like). Now: Food for the soul to me includes music. Music for most people is obviously a pleasure, refined or not, ridiculous or sublime. Music can calm ones nerves in the stresses of life; reminds you of the heavenly; reminds you of beauty while sometimes involved in the ugliness or drudgery of daily life; helps you feel better when life gets you down, and restores harmony and peace (if only temporarily). I happen to love Golden Age and Silver Age music (music that I grew up with), and of course this includes Romantic era classical music especially (Tchaikovsky, Delibes, Wagner, etc.). As most people who read my site already know, my top favorite film composers are Bernard Herrmann and Max Steiner. Then I like Jerry Goldsmith in most cases, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Tiomkin, John Barry, and so forth. So obviously I will buy dvds (and cds) that contain their music. I tend to buy more dvds than cds because the music was intended to be paired with the images on the screen. I enjoy both mediums but music married with film is the best or most effective expression since it was meant for that particular art medium.
