Chapter 1 Messing with People’s Minds without Rabbits or Hats In This Chapter ▶ Introducing magic and mentalism ▶ Deceiving the senses ▶ Looking into the human brain ▶ Examining how mentalism works or millennia sorcerers, shamans and priests used cunning, sleight of Fhand, clever ruses, gimmicks, gaffs and props to validate their authority and maintain control over the masses. Over several hundred years, however, the art of conjuring slowly morphed into a respectable form of entertainment. Magicians became admired for their skills instead of feared for their ‘mira- cles’. The nature of mental magic means that mentalists often walk a very fine line between entertainment and psychic fraud. In this chapter, I provide an introduction to the art of mentalism and the vari- ous ways in which you can, and in certain cases should never, use it. UnderstandingCOPYRIGHTED That Magic MATERIAL Is All in the Mind A mysterious man stands with his back to a woman on stage. He’s almost sinister looking, with his jet-black mane shaved into a widow’s peak. Nothing is said between the two people as they draw images on notepads – she draws the first thing that comes into her mind and he sketches the impressions he’s receiving from her. Ray Goulet By David Goodsell The wonderful things about a personal tour of Ray Goulet’s Mini Magic Musuem are the stories, the personal details about who previously owned the items and how Ray came to acquire them. Ray showed me three coin wands from the late 1800s. “I got these about 15 years ago from the estate of John Brown Cook, a great amateur magician who lived in New York City. He was great friends with Vernon, Carlyle, Slydini, and everyone else in New York. Cook was very wealthy and owned two Mercedes automobiles, with vanity plates that said Mr. Cook and Mrs. Cook.” Holding the wands in what can only be described as “with affection,” Ray continued. “All three are the same,” he told me, “but one is nickel plated, the second brass and the third a kind of gray, treated metal with black tips. I am familiar with Brema’s work and am pretty sure they were made by him. This looks like his work. These wands used 1800s half dollars, and look, the original half dollars are still in them – 1867, and 1889.” That is the icing on the collector’s cake! Turning toward the huge Houdini Master Mystifier “Bur- ied Alive” poster on the south wall, Ray rested his hand on the post of an upright frame holding well over a dozen small frames of glass, tilted in opposition, zig-zagging down the center of the frame. On top of the frame was a top hat. Picking up a goblet containing several coins, Ray explained how it worked. -

Teahen, PhD, Director Community College Leadership Program ABSTRACT This dissertation documents the justification, creation, and refinement of a traditional board game to be used in first-year experience (freshman seminar) courses. The board game enRolled allows students to play college in a guided classroom environment. The game creates a low-stakes environment for students to be able to fail at college without risking time and money. Further, it is designed to give students a relatable topic to debate. By having a common experience, students can distance themselves from what their expectations of college are and deliberate on the tangible game they have played. The discussions that stem from this play and the modification of the game elements are designed to help the students take ownership over the experience. Having a game experience to discuss allows a student to objectively analyze their player’s path through the academic setting and debate realistic and perceived unrealistic challenges. Through these discussions, it is possible for students to engage with content while having little to no firsthand knowledge. It is the hope of this author that the creation of enRolled leads to a more engaging curriculum in first-year experience courses. -
