Rok obhajoby disertační práce: 2011 Abstrakt: V naší práci se zabýváme problematikou specifických aspektů sportovních subkultur ve vztahu k učení, motivaci a adherenci k dané pohybové aktivitě. Zkoumanou skupinou je subkultura bajkerů. Účastníky výzkumu jsou jezdci a jezdkyně ve věkovém rozpětí 17 aţ 35 let, kteří na vysoké či špičkové výkonnostní úrovni provozují downhill, tedy sjezd, downhill freeride, fourcross, slope style, freestyle a flatland biking. Sběr dat proběhl prostřednictvím focus groups, individuálních rozhovorů a zúčastněného pozorování. K zpracování dat byl pouţit program ATLAS.ti 5.0 Analýza a interpretace dat byla realizována tvorbou zakotvené teorie. Výsledkem práce teoretický model, který interpretuje zkoumané jevy jako součást procesu negociace retence a apropriace kulturního kapitálu v síti kontextuálních vztahů, které jsou tvořeny koncepty kmenové učení, lifestyle a rizikový sport. The year of presentation: 2011 Abstract: This paper represents a qualitative study of specific aspects of learning, motivation and adherence to sport activity. The studied population is the subculture of bikers. Research sample was composed of male and female riders ranging in age between 17 and 35 who compete in BMX / MTB flatland, freestyle, slope style, or fourcross. Data was collected through focus groups, individual interviews and participant observation. The qualitative data analysis software ATLAS.ti 5.0 was used as a platform for the grounded theory-based analysis and conceptualisation of data. The results are in the form of a theoretical model. This model interprets the studied phenomenons as a part of a process of negotiation of retention and appropriation of culcural capital within a network of contextual relations of the studied concepts of tribal learning, lifestyle and risk sport. Taking up in-depth portraits of different aspects of living and growing up in a media-saturated era, the series takes an innovative approach to the genre of the ethnographic monograph. Through detailed case studies, the books explore practices at the forefront of media change through vivid description analyzed in relation to social, cultural, and historical context. New media practice is embedded in the routines, rituals, and institutions—both public and domestic—of everyday life. The books portray both average and exceptional practices but all grounded in a descriptive frame that ren- ders even exotic practices understandable. Rather than taking media content or technol- ogy as determining, the books focus on the productive dimensions of everyday media practice, particularly of children and youth. The emphasis is on how specific communities make meanings in their engagement with convergent media in the context of everyday life, focusing on how media is a site of agency rather than passivity. Abstract Skateboarding is widely regarded as a subculture that is highly resistant to any type of integration or co-option from large, mainstream companies. In 2002 Nike entered the skateboarding market with its Nike SB line of shoes, and since 2004 has experienced tremendous success within the skateboarding culture. During its early years Nike experienced a great deal of backlash from the skateboarding community, but has recently gained wider acceptance as a legitimate company within this culture. The purpose of this study is to examine the specific aspects of authenticity Nike was able achieve in order to successfully integrate into skateboarding. In order to investigate the case of Nike SB specifically, the concept of company authenticity within skateboarding must first be clarified as well. This study involved an electronic survey of skateboarders.

    Youth Perceptions of the Olympic Games: Attitudes Towards Action Sports at the YOG and Olympic Games Associate Professors Belinda Wheaton and Holly Thorpe University of Waikato, New Zealand Final report for The IOC Olympic Studies Centre Advanced Olympic Research Grant Programme 2015/2016 Award June 2016 ABSTRACT The IOC faces a significant challenge, that is, how to stay relevant to contemporary youth amid changing sport participation and consumption patterns and growing competition from mega-events such as the X Games. This project critically examined youth perceptions of the relevance and significance of the Olympic Games, and the Youth Olympic Games. It focused particularly on the attitudes of participants in newer, action sports (i.e., skateboarding, surfing, BMX, snowboarding, parkour, kite-surfing), as well as the cultural processes leading up to and following the short-listing of surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Online surveys, media analysis and interviews provide rich and nuanced insights into the experiences, attitudes, opinions, debates and politics that influence youths’ current and future participation in, and consumption of, the Olympic Games. Ultimately, this project reveals generational differences in attitudes towards action sports inclusion in the Olympic Games, as well as changing perceptions among those working most closely with the IOC to prepare their sports for possible Olympic inclusion. Furthermore, this report highlights the power and potential of action sports inclusion into the Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games, as well as some of the ongoing and new challenges for such significant changes to both the infrastructure of action sports cultures and industries, and to the transforming landscape of Olympic sport.

  • Abstract Extreme Sport Athletes' Perceptions
    ABSTRACT EXTREME SPORT ATHLETES’ PERCEPTIONS ABOUT SPORT PSYCHOLOGY AND USE OF MENTAL SKILLS Given the inherent danger of FMX and the association between the consistent use of mental skills and successful performance (Weder, 2009), an investigation of FMX athletes’ uses of sport psychology skills is warranted. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to investigate amateur FMX athletes’ perceptions about sport psychology and their use of mental skills. Nine amateur male FMX riders between the ages of 18-26 years (M = 21.67) participated in the study. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with each athlete. The interviews were audio-taped then transcribed verbatim. The interview transcripts were inductively analyzed following qualitative analysis procedures commonly used in sport psychology research (Côté, Salmela, Baria, & Russell, 1993). Peer debriefing and review were used throughout the data analysis process to address the validity of the emerging findings. Results showed that the athletes had little knowledge of sport psychology and how it could benefit their performance. However, all nine described using mental skills in some capacity prior to, during and after their participation. Inductive analysis resulted in five main categories: Performance Challenges, Mental Toughness, Performance Preparation, Attention Control and Anxiety Control. It is anticipated that the results of the study will provide insight regarding the culture of extreme sport athletes and offer suggestions about how sport psychology consultants may

Cognizant of the diminishing numbers of youth viewers, and the growing success of the X Games – the ‘Olympics’ of action sport – the International Olympic Committee (IOC) set about adding a selection of youth-oriented action sports into the Olympic program. In this article we offer the first in-depth discussion of the cultural politics of action sports Olympic incorporation via case studies of windsurfing, snowboarding, and bicycle motocross (BMX). Adopting a post-subcultural theoretical approach, our analysis reveals that the incorporation process, and forms of (sub)cultural contestation, is in each case unique, based on a complex and shifting set of intra- and inter-politics between key agents, namely the IOC and associated sporting bodies, media conglomerates, and the action sport cultures and industries. In so doing, our article illustrates some of the complex power struggles involved in modernizing the Olympic Games in the 21st century.
