Auction 87 To take place on 13 April 2019

Please post bids to Peter McGowan, Nethergreen House, 9 The Green, Ruddington, Notts NG11 6DY Or email: [email protected] The deadline is Tuesday, 9 April 2019. Late bids cannot be recorded. Ensure you include your current address and contact details. If you are bidding by email, please make sure you have received his confirmation of receipt. Successful bidders living outside the UK will be asked to pay for their lots before despatch. If two bids of the same amount are received for a lot, then the bid received first will take precedence, so early bidding is desirable. All lots now carry reserves, either at a default value of 75% of the estimate or at an undisclosed figure set by the seller. No bid will be accepted below the reserve. Take into account that some of our estimated prices appear rather too modest, and may be well overbid. We don’t claim that these estimates are wholly consistent, so make allowance for this. Remember that revised auction rules, issued last year, now apply. NB: See the members’ page of our website for images of this material.

Items unsold in our auctions eventually get added to the Web Offer pages that can be found at www.bookplatesociety.org/WebOffer2.htm where hundreds of exlibris owned by members are available for direct sale at fixed prices.

REPORT ON AUCTION 87 - HELD ON 13 APRIL 2019

Indicative pricing for early armorials is £16 for the usual medium-sized armorial (cheaper for common ones, but higher for rarities) and around £30 for large-size versions, but in the case of William Lord North of Carthlage (Lot 145, estimate £30) the hammer fell at £86. Next most expensive was a royal armorial for the Duke of Albany at £80 (Lot 176, est £35), followed at £70 by Badeley’s 1949 engraving for Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, last of the Queen’s aunts (Lot 175, est £25). Batches of Irish and Trophy plates went for £65 and £60 (Lots 159 & 158, estimated at £48 and £34 respectively. Over half of 61 lots fetching prices in the range £21 to £50 went for double the estimate, and nothing under estimate, so in aggregate realising £1,756 (est £978). Osmond’s “The Challenge” sold at £44 (Lot 40), Friend’s plate for gourmet André L Simon made £44 (Lot72), Gibbon’s designs for Diana Mitford’s first husband ran to £40 (Lot 160), and we saw the bookplates of actor-manager William Charles Macready, novelist William Harrison Ainsworth, and classicist Elizabeth Carter selling for £32, £31 and £30. Some large pictorials by CE Dawson (Lot 172) had been tipped to make more than the £35 paid, and a bookseller’s label for Edward Withers was undervalued at £32 (Lot 174, est £30). The 57 lots selling in the range £11-£20 achieved £864, much closer to the aggregate estimate of £795, and in the lowest range up to £10 were 44 lots selling for £335, half their £673 estimate. There were numerous bargains here, such as William Bucknall’s Jacobean armorial by Burghers for only £10 (Lot 117, est £20). Only nine lots (est £163) were left unsold, and overall the auction total of £3,316 compared favourably against the pre-sale estimate of £2,618 for those items.
