In 1862 Osgood Mackenzie began cultivating the 50-acre site – starting from bare rock and a few shrub willows. He devoted his life to creating this oasis of plants from around the world which flourish on a latitude more northerly than Moscow. Famous for its rhododendrons, Inverewe also has the most northerly planting of endangered Wollemi pines, Himalayan blue poppies, olearia from New Zealand and Tasmanian eucalyptus.
