Have you ever wanted drink a cold beverage with your favorite television news anchorperson or your favorite radio newscaster? Have you ever wanted to exchange quips with your favorite political commentator? This is your chance! With all apologies to the NBC TV program, the Milwaukee Press Club will celebrate its 121st anniversary on Thursday, November 9, 2006 in style by giving Southeastern Wisconsin residents the opportunity to meet and greet local media celebrities at a “Meet the (Milwaukee) Press” event. Taking place at The Newsroom Pub, 137 E. Wells Street in downtown Milwaukee (home of the Club), the celebration will begin with a 5:30 p.m. Attendees will then be entertained by more than 40 “celebrity bartenders”— media professionals from nearly all of the area’s media outlets and community leaders representing the movers and shakers of the area. Media outlets that have committed to tending bar include the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, M Magazine, MKE, WISN Channel 12, AM 620 WTMJ radio, WMCS, WKTI, Metroparent, Wisconsin Technology Works, Milwaukee Magazine, onmilwaukee.com, The Business Journal, Key Milwaukee magazine, Vital Source Magazine, Small Business Times, and Milwaukee Home & Fine Living.. (Others continue to sign on each day.) These journalists will be joined by community leaders who will pour on the festive spirit, including Milwaukee aldermen and frontrunners from UWM, Visit Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Brewers, Productive Knowledge, the Milwaukee Bar Association, Summerfest, and Zeppos and Associates. “The idea is to bring members of the media and community leaders together in one setting and invite the public to meet them in a way that otherwise wouldn't be possible,” commented Jon Anne Willow, president of the Milwaukee Press Club and Editor-in-Chief, Vital Source. About the Milwaukee Press Club: Dating back to 1885, the Milwaukee Press Club is the oldest continuously operating press club in North America and possibly the world. It currently has more than 300 members, representing a diverse community of media-focused professionals including representatives from nearly all local media outlets, public relations and marketing professionals, newsmakers, and individuals with an interest in the press. The Club hosts events throughout the year (including the annual City of Milwaukee Birthday Party), regularly recognizes excellence in journalism and commitment to the field via awards programs, and hosts local and national media celebrities for events. After efforts to establish a press club in Milwaukee failed in 1860, 1882, and 1883, four determined journalists formally established the Milwaukee Press Club on November 1, 1885. Initially, the Club was founded to provide a means of bringing together members of the newspaper profession. Today, operating with a broader focus in mind, the Club maintains a commitment to its original goal: elevating the journalism profession.
