A group of 65 youthful Farm Bureau leaders met re-, cently in Saginaw for a three-day Young Fanner training conference, based on'the "Participation - Key to Action~~ theme. j Speakers included three representatives of Michigan' Farm Bureau: Elton R. Smith, president; Dan Ree~, s~cretary-manager; and Dale Sherwin, legislative counsel;- Jack Angell, director of Broadcast Services, American Farm Bureau Federation; and Earl J. Hill, public relations, Consumers Power Company. Two-fold purpose of the meeting was to point out major objectives of Young Farmer activities in Michigan, and to encourage greater participation among young fanners in Michigan Fann Bureau. \Vith a state-wide membership of more than 52,000 families, the organization includes several thousand young farmers. The conference was conducted by the Young Farmer committee of MFB, and Larry Karsten of Presque Isle county was general chainnan. During the sessions, participants indicated interest in learning more about the history, philosophy and organiza- tional structure of Farm Bureau. Classes were devoted to discussion of these topics, along with others on marketing THE "COUNTRY COUSINS" - Young Farmer Communitx: Group of Calhoun county, and political education. -

In the Beginning In the days when only the American Indian inhabited the territory we know today as “Michigan,” explorers from Europe were actively seeking new lands for their mother countries. Two French explorers, Brulé and Grenoble (sometimes spelled “Grenolle”), were the first Europeans to cast eyes on the great Lake Superior around 1622, and were determined from that first moment to claim this new land for France. -

Historical Marker - S199 - Battle of Monguagon / Michigan Wyandot and Monguagon (Marker ID#:S199) Front - Title/Description Battle of Monguagon On August 9, 1812, Lieut. Col. James Miller and a force of about 600 American regulars and militia moved down Hull´s Trace in an attempt to bring desperately needed supplies from Frenchtown (Monroe) to Detroit. A similar effort had failed at Brownstown on August 5. Near the Wyandot village of Monguagon, American scouts ran into a British and Indian force of about 400 men led by Capt. Adam Muir and Tecumseh. Some ethnologists believe the Shawnee descended from the Fort Ancient people. The Shawnees were wanderers, who lived in many places in the south. They became associated closely with the Delaware in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Able fighters, the Shawnees stubbornly resisted white pressures until the Treaty of Greene Ville in 1795. At the time of the arrival of the European explorers on the shores of the North American continent, the American Indians were living in a network of highly developed cultures. Each group lived in similar housing, wore similar clothing, ate similar food, and enjoyed similar tribal life. In the geographical northeastern part of North America, the principal American Indian tribes were: Abittibi, Abenaki, Algonquin, Beothuk, Cayuga, Chippewa, Delaware, Eastern Cree, Erie, Forest Potawatomi, Huron, Iroquois, Illinois, Kickapoo, Mohicans, Maliseet, Massachusetts, Menominee, Miami, Micmac, Mississauga, Mohawk, Montagnais, Munsee, Muskekowug, Nanticoke, Narragansett, Naskapi, Neutral, Nipissing, Ojibwa, Oneida, Onondaga, Ottawa, Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Peoria, Pequot, Piankashaw, Prairie Potawatomi, Sauk-Fox, Seneca, Susquehanna, Swamp-Cree, Tuscarora, Winnebago, and Wyandot. -

Published 1989 by FAMILY LINE PUBLICATIONS INTRODUCTION Every effort has been made to achieve accuracy in this project, but interpreting the enumerator's hand-written material has posed problems. As an aid to deciphering many poorly written and misspelled names, the "Wood's Baltimore City Directory, 1861" was consulted. When an entry was found in the Directory where the first name and occupation agreed with the Census listing and the surname appears to be similar, the City Directory spelling was added in brackets in the text and added to the index. The original enumeration at the National Archives was consulted for all proofreading. The enumerator took great liberties in the spelling of surnames. Sometimes when an entry for a household carried over from one page to another the enumerator changed the spelling of the surname. We have retained both spellings in this book. Surnames were occasionally spelled phonetically, e.g. the name written as Knobloch in the Baltimore City Directory appears as Noblock in the census. The user is cautioned to check the index for all possible variations. In some sections it is obvious that the information was transcribed from the original record column by column rather than across the page, line by line, with frequent misalignment of the data on a particular line.
