By the way, the number that appears in brackets in the catalogue, World War 2 1939-1945 18 ie (1814) is a data base number so no need to quote it when ordering. Postage is always extra and insurance is available upon request. Overseas orders by credit card only. Postage will be by cheapest and most practical means possible unless otherwise requested. (In Australia, Express Post is the quickest and carefully handled by Australia Post. Express Post has increased to $17 for a 3kg satchel (this includes everything OVER 500gms and under 3kg). So if you want it quick use Express—bit slower is the 3kg red satchel - $15 which includes post pack and TLC). Our terms for first-time buyers are ‘payment up front’. Established buyers can pay by credit card, cheque, money order etc on receipt of an invoice. Catalogue 194 comes to you from the dead of winter here in chilly Perth where it was down to 1 degree this morning. And we’ve had lots of good, soaking rain with a lot more to come over the next week or so. Not bad for the driest capital city in Australia! A bit more rain may see the dams and aquifers topped up in prep for a following savagely hot summer. I think those twins El Nina and El Ninyo or whatever they’re called, are toying with us here in the West. But I also see that the south east and Canberra are experiencing snow falls. We were posted to Canberra in the mid ‘80s when it last snowed there. At Duntroon we always checked (visually) how far down Mt Taylor the snow line was before we would head out the bush. A bitter place in winter is Canberra and meltingly hot in summer. Anyway, I enjoy the cold and my beloved loves the heat so there you are! We’re still ploughing along with the ‘SIMMO’ project and have sold 750 of the 1,000 printed. So those who have yet to secure a signed copy you’d better do so quick smart as they will be all gone. (listed in the Biography section of this list) On the cover of this catalogue we present some very rare pieces indeed. The first item is an original ‘Murray’s’, a compilation list by unit of every Australian soldier who served in the Boer War 1899-1902. This is actually from the Ken White collection and is priced at $1,800. Serious collectors will want this. And the star piece this month is a 3 volume set of ‘Butler’s Medical volumes of WW1’. They are in excellent condition but to enhance the lot we have included a rare serviette ring from the Duntroon Officers Mess, named to LtCol Butler who was RMO of the College and lived in the Mess. He would have used this serviette ring at every meal. Accompanying this is another small book he wrote about ‘Diggers. Also two photographs of a dedication plaque and church in which he figures. There is also a good biographical article in a AWM journal. The entire lot is priced at $2,800. If further info or other photos needed just let me know. I’m also open ‘by appointment’ for a visit to the book room to view these items. Now that the nonsense election is finally out of the way we may be able to get on with our lives in a civilised manner not having to tolerate one more lying politician in our ears. Fair dinkum! Dramatic License: Histories Of Kenyan Theater, 1895-1964 Abstract This dissertation demonstrates how theatrical performances allowed for African political interventions into many of the most significant political moments in enyK a’s colonial history. Though the African majority was largely blocked from participation in the white settler colony’s centralized political institutions, many Africans found roles as musicians, audience members, and even actors within their colonizers’ ubiquitous pastime of amateur theater. By refashioning themselves as performers, disenfranchised people of color reinvented themselves as political actors—arming themselves with the language and ideology of the imperial state and using that language to both participate in and to undermined colonial politics. Bringing expressive culture to bear on Kenyan history, suggests that East African political culture has a dual nature that complicates narratives of collaboration or resistance. The great body of studies published on Kenyan colonial history to this point have given us a rich understanding of both ethno-historical forces and the frameworks of major political tensions.

    The Practice and Poetics of Fieldwork: Hugh Cott and the study of camouflage. Journal of Historical Geography Abstract This paper examines the practice and poetics of the British zoologist Hugh Cott’s fieldwork in order to explore the hybrid nature of developments in biological and military camouflage. Specifically focusing on two fieldtrips conducted in the 1920s to the Amazon and the Zambesi, and by examining how Cott communicated his scientific findings through photography and art this paper reveals that the performance of scientific knowledge production is spatially contingent; born of embodied, creative and demanding experiences and through multiple human and nonhuman engagements. Finally, it examines how this knowledge was transferred and utilised to develop mid-twentieth military camouflage. Thus, this paper considers how the craft and aesthetics of fieldwork shapes how nature is observed, recorded and communicated as scientific knowledge and military technology. Keywords: fieldwork, biography, camouflage, science, art, observation 1 Hugh Cott (1900-1987) was a British zoologist, dedicated to the study of adaptive coloration in nature (or camouflage); he was also a proficient wildlife photographer, gifted technical illustrator and influential Second World War camoufleur. The relationship between Cott’s scientific-self and these other diverse and seemingly discrete aspects of his character raises interesting questions surrounding the cultural nature of knowledge production and the performance of science. In particular, Cott’s combined use of the scientific and the aesthetic to communicate the uses of biology to the military is a useful means through which to narrate the history of camouflage as an entanglement of science, art and militarism.

Army Intelligence doctrine changes as appropriate and as required. The primary impetus towards positive change begins with the observations and lessons learned that impact real-world implementation of tactics, techniques, and procedures. Doctrine was never intended to be so abstract that an advanced degree in physics is required to comprehend it; instead, doctrine is supposed to build, with theory and reality supporting one another. The theoretical underpinning provides the basic material that is adapted to the particular venue; the real-world applications, in turn, sometimes change our methodologies. Technology and advanced capabilities significantly influence the type and na- ture of data needed and desired by decision makers. Innovative and adaptive field expedient methods can become doctrinal solutions. For all these reasons, doctrine is always evolving and adapting. (Ronald Penrose, 1941, Home Guard Manual of Camouflage, p.13) This thesis approaches the cultures and geographies of military conflict, charting the history of military camouflage through a multi-faceted biography of this technology’s life-path. By studying the scientific biography of Dr Hugh Cott (1900-1987), eminent zoologist and skilful artist turned camoufleur in WWII, entwined with the fragmentary mobile biographies of other camouflage practioners, including artists, animals and even a magician, the sites and spacings of camouflage’s life-path from the late-nineteenth century into the Desert War are traced.

    Annotated Bibliography Primary Sources Foot, M. R. D., and J. M. Langley. MI 9: Escape and Evasion. Biteback Publishing, 2020. This book was used to provide information about the various members of MI-9 through a primary source. This was crucial to our research as it gave critical information on the escape and evasion methods used. This primary source provided in depth information from members of these groups. Hutton, Clayton, et al. Official Secret: The Remarkable Story of Escape Aids, Their Invention, Production, and the Sequel . Odhams Press Limited, 1961. This primary source was a novel written by Christopher Clayton Hutton himself. From this source we were able to get first hand accounts from his experiences. He detailed the process of how he was able to come to successfully print on silk, which was specifically expanded on in the Silk Map page. This source helped us significantly in understanding the explicit steps taken that led up to the success of creating silk maps Hutton, Clayton. Their Official Secret: the Remarkable Story of Escape Aids Invention, Production, and the Sequel. Pickle Partners Publishing, 2015. This source is an autobiography from Clayton Hutton. It details his life and experiences with MI-9. We used it for general knowledge, as well as background information on Clayton Hutton. This information was used to help understand the inventions and the aid provided. Langley, James. Fight Another Day. 1974. ​ ​ A book about World War II by James Langley, a soldier in the British Army. The book was useful to understand the importance of having morale in war, specifically, how the escapees of MI9 gave hope to the rest of the soldiers who were still imprisoned.
