A Sky-Fm que siempre me acompañó hasta en las madrugadas más cansadas. “El todo es mucho más complejo que la suma de sus partes” Aristóteles iv RESUMEN GENERAL Se presenta la información del análisis de la macrofauna de invertebrados marinos asociados a las comunidades de manglar de las bahías de Ohuira y Topolobampo, Sinaloa, México. Se muestrearon diez estaciones (I-X) a lo largo de un año (2010-2011), estudiándose organismos asociados al sistema radicular del manglar, al sedimento y la fauna errante. En cada zona se midió la temperatura del agua, el oxígeno disuelto, el pH, la salinidad, la materia orgánica y la textura de los fondos. Se identificaron 258 especies, resultando 12 phyla: Porifera (11 especies), Cnidaria (tres), Ctenophora (una), Platyhelminthes (una), Nemertea (una), Annelida (Polychaeta) (28), Sipuncula (una), Mollusca (115) Arthropoda (85), Ectoprocta (dos), Echinodermata (seis) y Chordata (Ascididae) (cuatro). Las especies con mayor abundancia absoluta fueron el cirripedio Amphibalanus amphitrite y el molusco gasterópodo Vermetus indentatus con 13,624 y 11,033 organismos (30.73% y 24.84% respectivamente de todas las muestras). La salinidad fue el único parámetro que resultó más bajo (EI) que en el resto de las zonas de muestreo. La estación VI presentó mayor riqueza de especies con 145, mientras que la I tuvo solamente 39 especies. En el Análisis de Componentes Principales (ACP) sobresalen tres componentes: PC1 (40.818), PC2 (22.058) y PC3 (15.984) destacando la relación entre las especies recolectadas y la salinidad del agua, la temperatura y el fitoplancton tóxico, así como la materia orgánica y el pH. El análisis por agrupación muestra a dos conglomerados principales donde sobresalen la estación I en un grupo y la VI en otro (la menos y más biodiversa). v GENERAL SUMMARY Analysis provides information of marine invertebrate macrofauna associated with mangrove communities in Ohuira and Topolobampo bays, in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico. Ten stations (I-X) were sampled over a year (2010-2011), studying organisms associated with root systems of mangroves, sediment and wildlife wandering. In each area was measured the next variables: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, organic matter and texture of the funds were these plant communities inhabits. A total of 258 species were identified, resulting in 12 phyla: Porifera (11 species), Cnidaria (three), Ctenophora (one), Platyhelminthes (one), Nemertea (one), Annelida (Polychaeta) (28), Sipuncula (one), Mollusca (115) Arthropoda (85), Ectoprocta (two), Echinodermata (six) and Chordata (Ascididae) (four). The species with the highest absolute abundance were the barnacle Amphibalanus amphitrite and the mollusk gastropod Vermetus indentatus with 13,624 and 11,033 specimens (30.73% and 24.84% of all samples). Salinity was the only parameter that was lower (EI) than the other sampling areas. Station VI showed higher species richness with 145 species, while station I had only 39 species. In the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) protrude three components: PC1 (40.818), PC2 (22.058) and PC3 (15.984) highlighting the relationship between collected species and water salinity, temperature and phytoplankton, also the organic matter and pH. El listado de especies incluye las formas de vida en relación con el sustrato, criptofauna o epifauna, así como su tipo de distribución en las 2 principales regiones zoogeográficas marinas para el golfo de México: Carolineana y Caribeña; se incluyen también las especies que sólo se encuentran en el golfo de México. El listado incluye 195 especies pertenecientes a 9 grupos, de los cuales Crustacea es el más diverso con 73 especies, seguido por Mollusca con 69 y Echinodermata con 18; los grupos con menor riqueza específica fueron: Chelicerata con 2 especies y Platyhelminthes y Sipuncula con una sola especie cada grupo. Del total de especies 74 son nuevos registros de localidad y 7 nuevos registros para Veracruz.

Accepted 11-V-2001) Abstract: The mollusks in Manuel Antonio National Park on the central section of the Pacific coast of Costa Rica were studied along thirty-six transects done perpendicular to the shore, and by random sampling of subtidal environments, beaches and mangrove forest. Seventy-four species of mollusks belonging to three classes and 40 families were found: 63 gastropods, 9 bivalves and 2 chitons, during this study in 1995. Of these, 16 species were found only as empty shells (11) or inhabited by hermit crabs (5). Forty-eight species were found at only one locality. Half the species were found at one site, Puerto Escondido. The most diverse habitat was the low rocky intertidal zone. Nodilittorina modesta was present in 34 transects and Nerita scabricosta in 30. Nodilittorina aspera had the highest density of mollusks in the transects. Only four transects did not clustered into the four main groups. The species composition of one cluster of transects is associated with a boulder substrate, while another cluster of transects associates with site.

Abstract: Peru is an ecologically diverse country, with 84 life zones in the Holdridge system and 18 ecological regions (including two marine). 1910 molluscan species have been recorded. The highest number corresponds to the sea: 570 gastropods, 370 bivalves, 36 cephalopods, 34 polyplacoforans, 3 monoplacophorans, 3 scaphopods and 2 aplacophorans (total 1018 species). The most diverse families are Veneridae (57spp.), Muricidae (47spp.), Collumbellidae (40 spp.) and Tellinidae (37 spp.). Biogeographically, 56 % of marine species are Panamic, 11 % Peruvian and the rest occurs in both provinces; 73 marine species are endemic to Peru. Land molluscs include 763 species, 2.54 % of the global estimate and 38 % of the South American esti- mate. The most biodiverse families are Bulimulidae with 424 spp., Clausiliidae with 75 spp. and Systrophiidae with 55 spp. In contrast, only 129 freshwater species have been reported, 35 endemics (mainly hydrobiids with 14 spp. The paper includes an overview of biogeography, ecology, use, history of research efforts and conser- vation; as well as indication of areas and species that are in greater need of study.

E-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY: The gastropod shell use of the hermit crab Calcinus californiensis was studied at Troncones, Guerrero, Méx- ico. Hermit crabs were captured at two different levels of the intertidal zone, in wave-protected and wave-exposed sites. C. californiensis occupied shells of 18 gastropod species. At both wave-action sites, Cantharus sanguinolentus was the most occupied shell. Columbella sp. was used more by females than by males, and Nerita scabricosta was more used by males. The frequency of use of the shells was different between the different wave sites. N. scabricosta and Columbella sp. were occupied more at the wave-protected than at the exposed sites; C. sanguinolentus and Stramonita biserialis were occupied more at the exposed sites. The hermit crabs at the wave-exposed sites occupied heavier and thicker shells compared with the crabs from the protected sites. The Olmstead-Tukey diagram showed eight shell species as dominant in the wave-protected sites, and seven in the wave-exposed sites. The species were on sandy and rocky beaches, coastal lagoons, estuaries, mangroves, rocky breakwaters of ports, and shallow subtidal areas (14–47 m depth). A total of 78 bivalve species and 82 gastropod species were recorded. Most of these were associated with sandy and rocky beaches and breakwaters of ports. The estuaries host 30 species and the coastal lagoons only two. In the shallow subtidal there were 18 gastropod species and 40 bivalve species representing 36.3% of all. This study adds 24 bivalve species and 29 gastropod species not recorded in previous studies for a total count of 213 species (102 bivalves and 111 gastropods) for Gulf of Tehuantepec.

Rehder Research Curator, Division of Mollusks Introduction An outstanding patroness of the arts and sciences in eighteenth- century England was Lady Margaret Cavendish Bentinck, Duchess of Portland, wife of William, Second Duke of Portland. At Bulstrode in Buckinghamshire, magnificent summer residence of the Dukes of Portland, and in her London house in Whitehall, Lady Margaret— widow for the last 23 years of her life— entertained gentlemen in- terested in her extensive collection of natural history and objets d'art. Among these visitors were Sir Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander, pupil of Linnaeus. As her own particular interest was in conchology, she received from both of these men many specimens of shells gathered on Captain Cook's voyages. Apparently Solander spent considerable time working on the conchological collection, for his manuscript on descriptions of new shells was based largely on the "Portland Museum." When Lady Margaret died in 1785, her "Museum" was sold at auction. The task of preparing the collection for sale and compiling the sales catalogue fell to the Reverend John Lightfoot (1735-1788).
