The Recent Mollusks: Gastropoda: Harpidae, Vasidae, and Volutidae BY WILLIAM K. EMERSON' INTRODUCTION The present paper continues a study of the Recent marine mollusks collected in west Mexican waters during the course of the expedition. Previous reports considered the family Conidae (Emerson and Old, 1962), the superfamily Cypraeacea (Emerson and Old, 1963a), and the super- families Strombacea, Tonnacea, and Cymatiacea (Emerson and Old, 1963b). The present report treats the gastropod families Harpidae, Vasi- dae, and Volutidae. Specimens were taken by shore and intertidal collecting, by skin div- ing, and by dredging from a small skiff and from the schooner "Puritan." Dredging operations were restricted to depths no greater than 50 fathoms. The itinerary and descriptions of the collecting stations were recorded in the general account of the expedition (Emerson, 1958). The present collection contains three of the four eastern Pacific species that represent the families covered by this paper. The arago- nite shell and surface ocean habitat of the atlantids makes them particularly susceptible to ocean acidifica- tion and ocean warming, and atlantids are likely to be useful indicators of these changes. However, we still lack fundamental information on their taxonomy and biogeography, which is essential for monitoring the effects of a changing ocean. -

Accepted 11-V-2001) Abstract: The mollusks in Manuel Antonio National Park on the central section of the Pacific coast of Costa Rica were studied along thirty-six transects done perpendicular to the shore, and by random sampling of subtidal environments, beaches and mangrove forest. Seventy-four species of mollusks belonging to three classes and 40 families were found: 63 gastropods, 9 bivalves and 2 chitons, during this study in 1995. Of these, 16 species were found only as empty shells (11) or inhabited by hermit crabs (5). Forty-eight species were found at only one locality. Half the species were found at one site, Puerto Escondido. The most diverse habitat was the low rocky intertidal zone. Nodilittorina modesta was present in 34 transects and Nerita scabricosta in 30. Nodilittorina aspera had the highest density of mollusks in the transects. Only four transects did not clustered into the four main groups. The species composition of one cluster of transects is associated with a boulder substrate, while another cluster of transects associates with site. -

These taxa represent the major gastropod groups in the intertidal and shallow water ecosystems of the Philippines. This distribution is described with reference to the McManus (1985) basin isolation hypothesis of species diversity in Southeast Asia. I examine species-area relationships, range sizes and shapes, major ecological factors that may affect these relationships and ranges, and a phylogeny of one taxon. Range shape and orientation is largely determined by geography. Large ranges are typical of mid-intertidal herbivorous species. Triangualar shaped or narrow ranges are typical of carnivorous taxa. Narrow, overlapping distributions are more common in the central Philippines. The frequency of range sizesin the Philippines has the right skew typical of tropical high diversity systems. -

S. Krishnan): [email protected]. Abstract Radular morphologies of 22 species of the genus Conus from Indian coastal waters were analyzed by optical and scanning elec- tron microscopy. Although the majority of species in the present study are vermivorous, all three feeding modes known to occur in the genus are represented. Specific radular-tooth structures consistently define feeding modes. Species showing simi- lar feeding modes also show fine differences in radular structures. We propose that these structures will be of value in species identification in cases of ambiguity in other characteristics. Examination of eight discrete radular-tooth components has allowed us to classify the studied species of Conus into three groups. We see much greater inter-specific differences amongst vermivorous than amongst molluscivorous and piscivorous species. We have used these differences to provide a formula for species identification. The radular teeth of Conus araneosus, C. augur, C. bayani, C. biliosus, C. hyaena, C. lentiginosus, C. loroisii, and C. malacanus are illustrated for the first time. In a few cases our study has also enabled the correction of some erroneous descriptions in the literature. -

In the spring of 1876, Mr. W. J. Fisher, of San Francisco, who had previously, in 1873, been connected as Naturalist with the IT. S. S. Tuscarora Telegraph Sounding Expedition, under Commander George E. Belknap, conceived the idea of chartering or purchasing a small vessel and making an investigation of the shores and islauds of Lower California and the Gulf of California in the interest of natural history. Through the generosity of Mr. Fisher, the greater part of the mollusks collected by him were given to me, and became a part of the Stearns Collection, now incorporated into the greater collection of the IT. S. National Museum. Mr. Fisher's collection, though made, as it will be seen, many years ago, has not heretofore ))een brought to notice. Notwithstanding this lapse of time, its value, through the importance of the information it furnishes on the geographical distribution of most of the species enum- erated, has not been impaired by delay in publication, as no subsequent collector has touched at or visited so many localities around the shores of the Gulf and of Lower California, or if any such collection has been made it has not been made known. Many of the localities have not pre- viously been mentioned, either by collectors or authors. The impor- tance of Mr. Fisher's collection, in its bearing upon the Molhisca of the Tres Marias, is worthy of special mention; it would of itself justify the publication of the list, for it exhibits more fully the mollusk-fauna of this interesting and little-known group of islands, and includes a greater number of species than any and all previous publications.
