    Before London started swinging: representing the British beatniks David Buckingham This essay is part of a larger project, Growing Up Modern: Childhood, Youth and Popular Culture Since 1945. In his autobiography, Personal Copy, the journalist and broadcaster Ray Gosling describes a feeling of imminent change that was shared by many young people at the very end of the 1950s: There was just this feeling… that we were important, that something was going to happen. How, and in what direction, we didn’t know. And we didn’t much care. It was a very, very, very odd feeling, but we felt it. Gosling himself came from a frugal working-class background in the provincial English city of Northampton. In 1959, he dropped out of university and set up a youth centre in Leicester that was run autonomously by a committee of young people. The academic Richard Hoggart – the author of The Uses of Literacy, who was soon to become the founding director of the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS) at Birmingham University – was on his management committee. Although Gosling’s youth centre collapsed, he developed the argument for youth-led welfare provision in a pamphlet for the Fabian Society; and he went on to build a career as a writer and public speaker, offering an insider’s perspective on the emerging youth culture of the time. He became associated with the New Left, and began to mix in the more cosmopolitan culture of London’s coffee bars, making friends with Stuart Hall (then the editor of the New Left Review) and the novelist Colin MacInnes, whom he described as his ‘mentor’.

It has meant different things at different historical moments of popular music and within academic, music press and industry discourses. Even though what independent music refers to might not be substantive, it has tended to signify an oppositional ethos comprising practices related to maintaining distinction from commercialised popular music. Historical narratives of popular music reveal that independent music or indie, has been defined and re-defined, from signifying an ethos of resistance comprising anti-major record label and anti- corporatisation attitudes, to rubrics of sound aesthetics, marketing categories and niche audience segments. Its different connotations then should not be assumed. Comprehension of different dimensions of independent music call for theorisation of youth, rebellion, alternative cultures, and their connections with musical forms, along with production and distribution-related organisational infrastructures revolving around them.

The conference was a milestone in the development of audio description in the UK and, as audio description passes its quarter century, it seems a fitting moment to reproduce the report of the proceedings which was approved for publication by RNIB but never printed. The conference resolution called for a national organisation of describers which would work with other professional bodies and visually impaired users, and RNIB undertook to set up a steering group which would carry out a survey of audio describers in the UK to determine their needs and views; develop a blueprint for a national association based on the findings of the survey; and organise a founding conference at which the blueprint would be presented. The second national conference on audio description, which took place at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on 30 April 1999, was also the founding conference of the new organisation.

    Smells Like Teen Spirit: Channelling Subcultural traditions in contemporary Dr Martens branding In 2012, the Dr Martens footwear company announced profits of £22 million with a 230% rise in sales from 2011-2012 (Jones, 2012). In the light of this achievement, this paper will investigate the ideologies behind recent marketing campaigns - ‘First and Forever’ (A/W 2011 and S/S 2012) and ‘Individual Style. United Spirit” (A/W2012) and will consider the specific branding strategies that have encouraged such consumer attention during this period. A textual analytical approach to promotional materials including website resources and product catalogue, will specifically identify the role that the brand’s heritage plays within the contemporary campaign. This paper will argue that youth subcultural appropriations of the brand during the 20th century are specifically channelled in the 21st century and provide an essential framework that positions the current identity of the brand in relation to its historical antecedents. It is argued that the Dr Martens’ company consciously promote the “cultural biography” (Kopytoff, 2001: 66) of their product and subsequently utilise subcultural tropes to attract the contemporary consumer. Keywords: subculture; style; branding; identity; advertising campaign Fashion’s preoccupation with previous decades’ styles and accessories dominates contemporary retailers’ consumer apparel. The Autumn/Winter 2012 season was particularly noteworthy in the prevalence of footwear that was once the sartorial domain of youth scenes known in academic circles as subcultures.
