Law

Doctorandus Degree (J.D.), Cum Laude ~~~ Aug. 17, 1990, University of Limburg (presently named: University of Maastricht), The Netherlands

~ As a result of the European degree equivalency movement, the “doctorandus” degree is no longer used and has now been formally replaced by the Master degree. Literally, the word Doctorandus means “he who has to become a ” and the degree did indeed represent a course of studies that was more akin to an PhD-Cand or ABD-“All but the dissertation” stage. But unlike the ABD, the Drs. degree was considered a terminal degree. There is no MD degree in Europe. The PhD is the only recognized doctoral degree.

~~ In the Netherlands, academicians seeking their degree were not considered students. Rather, they were usually employed and salaried by the university to undertake the research and write the dissertation. Some academicians were specifically employed to undertake their doctoral research project (typically four years); others (like myself) were expected to undertake doctoral research as part of their academic function in a specified period.

~~~ Prior to the European degree equivalency movement, all graduate studies in The Netherlands ended with a “Doctorandus” degree. Since completion of law studies in the U.S. rarely leads to a Master’s degree (LLM), but usually to a JD degree, the Dutch Drs. degree in law is most equivalent to the JD degree.
