However, no full length work on the representation of queer sexualities in silent and early sound film has yet been published, although the articles and chapters of Dyer (1990), Kuzniar (2000) and Barrios (2003) are currently taken as the definitive accounts of these issues. However, each of the above studies deals with a specific country or region and, since their publication, a significant number of silent films have been discovered that were previously thought lost. There has also been a tendency in the past to map modern concepts of sexuality and gender on to films made nearly one hundred years ago. This thesis, therefore, compares the representations of male queerness and male-male intimacy in the films of America and Europe during the period 1912 to 1934, and does so by placing these films within the social and cultural context in which they were made.

Le genre cinématographique constitue une puissante norme socio-esthétique, particulièrement efficiente aux États-Unis. Renforcée par le studio system de l’ère classique1, cette catégorisation de la production cinématographique agit comme grille de lecture pour le spectatorat, et induit l’établissement et la maîtrise d’un certain nombre de codes de la part des instances productrices et interprétatives. Elle organise ainsi toute la cinématographie états-unienne, de la production des films (studios spécialisés dans certains genres) à leur réception (usage des catégories génériques par les spectateurs). Il est entendu que le genre est une catégorie mouvante et que les processus de genrification2 sont à étudier dans leur caractère dynamique. Certains films se situent aux croisements de plusieurs catégories génériques et témoignent de multiples généricités : films d’horreur comiques, comédies musicales fantastiques, westerns mélodramatiques, thrillers en costume d’époque, etc. Généralement associés aux B-movies, aux productions mineures et de moindre qualité, ces films hybrides sont d’un intérêt certain pour le chercheur : ils constituent des cas particuliers, des exceptions à la norme, et se présentent ainsi comme les supports potentiels de réceptions et d’interprétations3 singulières.
