Almost on your doorstep is Trsteno Arboretum, a lush Renaissance garden which is open to the public. Known as the 'Pearl of the Adriatic' Dubrovnik is within 10 km of Villa Lorena. Its Medieval and Baroque quarter is a UNESCO world heritage site and is protected within its thick walls. Inside the walls you find an array of cafes, restaurants, konobas, and shops, especially along the Stradun (the main road), but also church domes, fountains, monasteries and fortified city gates. Group excursions by kayak are strongly recommended and very popular with children and adult alike. From the top of Mount Srd, easy to reach by cable car from Dubrovnik, you can enjoy some striking panoramic views over the city and the sea.     ancient Pterocarya stenoptera (champion), Thuyopsis dolobrata and Phyllocladus alpinus ‘Silver Blades’. We just had time to admire Michelia doltsopa in flower before having to leave this interesting garden. Our final visit was to Fonmom Castle, the home of Sir Brooke Boothby who had very kindly invited us all to lunch. We sat at a long table in a room orig- inally built in 1180, and remodelled in Georgian times with beautiful plaster- work and furnishings. After lunch we had a tour of the garden which is on shallow limestone soil, and at times windswept. We admired a large Fagus syl- vatica f. purpurea planted on the edge of the escarpment in 1818, that had been given buttress walls to hold the soil and roots. There was a small Sorbus domes- tica growing in the lawn and we learnt that this tree is a native in the country nearby. We walked through the closely planted ornamental walled garden into the large productive walled vegetable garden. This final visit was a splen- did ending to our tour, and having thanked our host for his warm hospitality, we said goodbye to fellow members and departed after a memorable four days, so rich in plant content and well organised by our leader Rose Clay. There were 15 representatives of Chlorophyceae and 10 Cyanobacteria, as well as scattered representatives of Schizomycetes, Xanthophyceae and Mycota. Five diatoms were present throughout the research period: Achnanthes affinis Grun., A. microcephala Grun.. Cocconeisplacentula Ehr., Synedra ulna Ehr., and Gom- phonema dichotomum Kiitz. The maximal number of species was detected during the winter and spring, and the minimum number in autumn. The saprobic index, based on the characteristic species determined in the benthic community (ranging from 1.7 to 2.2) indi­ cated moderate impurity. It also contains a wood of Aleppo pines, as well as one of holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) in vari­ ous stages of degradation and poorly developed stocks of littoral, thermophilic, pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens Villd.j. The practice of introducing exotic species in the area goes as far back as to the early 16th century, and has been kept up.
