1 INTRODUCTION

The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, awarded each year by the Eu- ropean Parliament, is intended to honour exceptional individuals who combat intolerance, fanaticism and oppression around the world. In 2016, the Prize was awarded to Basee Taha and Lamiya Aji Bashar - survivors of sexual enslavement by Islamic State who have beco- me spokespersons for women afflicted by IS’s campaign of sexual violence.

The European Parliament Information Offices (EPIOs) promoted the Sakha- rov Prize via various events and actions organised within the scope of the wider, year-long Human Rights campaign of the European Parliament, rai- sing awareness of the EP’s commitment to the protection of human rights around the world. This report looks at the EPIOs’ activities in more de- The 2016 Sakharov Prize laureates poster © European Union - European Parliament tail and presents key facts and figures concerning their organisation.

The promotion of the human rights campaign in the was ensured by both EPIOs. In Lon- don, given the far-reaching implications of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU for thousands of long-term residents and their families, choosing this theme for the discussion on human rights resulted in a high public turnout, a passionate debate and very good social media coverage (the EPIO London trended in second place on Twitter that day). Together with their co-hosts, University College London, EPIO London hosted a public event «Uncertain Future: Rights and Citizenship in post-Brexit Britain». It was particularly timely, coming after the High Court ruling that the Executive has no right to trigger Article 50 without Par- liament’s approval and several days before the Supre- me Court hearing of the Government’s appeal of this ruling. The panel of speakers were high profile, inclu- ding Barrister Schona Jolly. The EPIO Edinburgh held a public debate on the Sakharov campaign at Queen’s University, Belfast. The discussion forum, organised in partnership with Queen’s University Belfast Human Rights Centre, gave students the possibility to vote on their preferred candidate. The event was organised on the same day as the announcement of the decision by the EP Conference of Presidents on the Sakharov Prize 2016 winners in Strasbourg. The members of the au- dience also favoured the 2016 laureates: Nadia Murad and Lamiya Aji Bashar. A public debate organised in partnership with the Glasgow Human Rights Network at the Glasgow University premises also selected the eventual winners as their favoured candidates for the prize. The attendees discussed both the practical and symbolic merits of each nominee, as well as the role and purpose of the Sakharov Prize as an initiative.
