The recovery plan is based upon the belief that State and Federal conser- vation agencies and knowledgeable, interested individuals should endeavor to preserve the Socorro isopod and its habitat and to restore them, as much as possible, to their historic status. The objective of the plan is to make this belief a reality. The best information available was used to produce this recovery plan. It is hoped the plan will be utilized by all agencies, institutions and individuals concerned with the Socorro isopod and its ecosystem to coordinate conservation activities. Periodically, and as the plan is implemented, revisions will be necessary. Revisions will be the responsibility the task of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in cooperation with the New Mexico Game and Fish Department and implementation is the task of the managing agencies, especially the New Mexico Game and Fish Department. This completed Socorro Isopod Recovery Plan has been approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The plan does not necessarily represent official positions or approvals of cooperating agencies and does not necessarily represent the views of the New Mexico Game and Fish Department. -

THREATENED AND ENDANGERED SPECIES OF NEW MEXICO 2008 BIENNIAL REVIEW DRAFT First Public Comment Period March 11, 2008 New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Conservation Services Division DRAFT 2008 Biennial Review of T & E Species of NM, 3/11/08 THREATENED AND ENDANGERED SPECIES OF NEW MEXICO 2008 Biennial Review and Recommendations Authority: Wildlife Conservation Act (17-2-37 through 17-2-46 NMSA 1978) EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: A total of 118 species and subspecies are on the 2008 list of threatened and endangered New Mexico wildlife. The list includes 2 crustaceans, 25 mollusks, 23 fishes, 6 amphibians, 15 reptiles, 32 birds and 15 mammals (Tables 1, 2). An additional 7 species of mammals has been listed as restricted to facilitate control of traffic in federally protected species. A species is endangered if it is in jeopardy of extinction or extirpation from the state; a species is threatened if it is likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range in New Mexico. Species or subspecies of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, mollusks, and crustaceans native to New Mexico may be listed as threatened or endangered under the Wildlife Conservation Act (WCA). During the Biennial Review, species may be upgraded from threatened to endangered, or downgraded from endangered to threatened, based upon data, views, and information regarding the biological and ecological status of the species. Investigations for new listings or removals from the list (delistings) can be undertaken at any time, but require additional procedures from those for the Biennial Review. The 2006 Biennial Review contained a recommendation for maintaining the status for 119 species and subspecies listed as threatened, endangered, or restricted under the WCA, and uplisting four species (Arizona grasshopper sparrow, Pecos bluntnose shiner, spikedace, and meadow jumping mouse ) from threatened to endangered and downlisting two species (shortneck snaggletooth and piping plover) from endangered to threatened. -

A, 4ème étage, pièce 405, 7 quai St Bernard, 75005 Paris, France Abstract Exosphaeroides quirosi is described from a karstic stream and its associated cave sink located 390 m above sea level and 23.5 km inland from the east coast of Espíritu Santo (Vanuatu, SW Pacific ocean). This is the first purely freshwater sphaeromatid isopod reported from an oceanic island, and is a new example of colonization of an oceanic island freshwa- ter habitat by a typically marine taxon. E. quirosi differs from any other representative of the family in the peculiar con- dition displayed by the exopod of pleopod 4, which has a falcate outline, is distinctly longer than the corresponding endopod, and has the medial margin of the proximal segment produced into a foliaceous endite. Seemingly, the sexual dimorphism expressed in the presence/absence of a setulose fringe on the pereopods has not been recorded in any other sphaeromatid. -

New genera and species of sphaeromatid isopod crustaceans from Australian marine coastal waters. Memoirs of Museum Victoria 60(2): 309–369. Australia has a great diversity of sphaeromatid isopods, both in terms of species and genera, with 187 recorded species and subspecies in 58 genera. This contribution records and describes a further four genera: Austrasphaera gen. nov., Cassidias Richardson, 1906, Koremosphaera gen. nov. and Pedinura gen. nov. and ten new species: Austrasphaera berentsae sp. nov., A. springthorpei sp. nov., Cassidias australiensis sp. nov., Exosphaeroma agmokara sp. nov., Exosphaeroma alveola sp. nov., Koremosphaera colonus sp. nov., Margueritta sandyi sp. nov., Moruloidea perionasus sp. nov., Pedinura flindersia sp. nov. and Pedinura mokari sp. nov. Several appear to be common and widely distributed, with both species of Austrasphaera and Pedinura flindersia ranging from Vic. to WA; Pedinura mokari is recorded from Vic. and SA while Cassidias australiensis is recorded from the NT to the North-West Shelf, WA. The remaining species are restricted to or near to their type locations. A brief diagnosis is given for Exosphaeroma and an annotated list of all accepted species is provided, including incertae sedis species and some recent exclusions from this genus. -

Studies may invertebrate conservation; include measures of body size but typically group individuals into size/age psi (w); classes or compare populations. Such broad comparisons may obscure the social selection. details of interactions that ultimately determine how socially contingent characteristics evolve. We propose that understanding cannibalism is facili- tated by using an interacting phenotypes perspective that includes the influ- ences of the phenotype of a social partner on the behaviour of a focal individual and focuses on variation in individual pairwise interactions. We investigated how relative body size, a composite trait between a focal individual and its social partner, and the sex of the partners influenced pre- cannibalistic aggression in the endangered Socorro isopod, Thermosphaeroma thermophilum. We also investigated whether differences in mating interest among males and females influenced cannibalism in mixed sex pairs. We studied these questions in three populations that differ markedly in range of body size and opportunities for interactions among individuals. -

CRUSTACEA FROM THE BOLSON OF CUATRO CIENEGAS, COAHUILA, MEXICO GERALD A. COLE Route 4, Box 892 Flagstaff, Arizona 86001 ABSTRACT Twelve crustaceans are known from the Cuatro CiCnegas basin. These include: the cirolanid isopods Speocirolana ther- mydronis, Sphaerolana interstitialis, Sphaerolana affinis; one stenasellid isopod Mexistenasellus coahuila, the first of the Stenasellidae found in the New World; and two endemic hadzioid (weckeliid) amphipods originally assigned to Mexiweckelia, M. colei, and M. particeps. M, part;ceps will be re ferred to the monotypic new genus Paramexiweckelia (Holsinger, in press), These six species were described from the basin and are endemic to it; *Ie genera Sphaerolana and, Paramexiweckelia have no representatives outside the basin. Other crustaceans include: a species of the brine shrimp, Artemia; another anostracan, probably a species of Streptocephalus; an harpacticoid copepod similar to Cletocarnptus albuquerquensis; an ostracodrefer- able to Chlarnydotheca,' an amphipod much like Hyalella azteca, although designated here simply Hyalella; and the decapod Palaemonetes suttkusi, The last species, Chlamydotheca, and H, azteca were described originally from Mexican material. The within clade relationships of these taxa are not as definitively demonstrated because taxon sampling for some groups is still limited. In our analyses the Sphaeromatidae are shown to be unequivocally monophyletic. This is contrary to the morphology-based analysis by A. Brandt and G. Poore in 2003, which included only five Sphaeromatidae and found the family to be paraphyletic. The Ancinidae are also upheld, and the Valvifera is the sister taxon to Serolidae. Surprisingly Plakarthrium (Plakarthiidae) is nested within the Sphaeromatidae in most analyses. -

El presente trabajo integra una lista de especies de crustáceos isópodos acuáticos continentales de México con referencias taxonómicas originales, sinonimias, localidades tipo y distribución. El listado comprende un total 6 familias que agrupan 49 especies, de las cuales sólo 10 son epigeas, mientras que las 39 restantes son hipogeas registradas en manantiales termales y cuevas de los sectores oriental y centro del país, así como en cenotes de los estados de Yucatán y Quintana Roo. Los grupos más diversifi cados en México son cirolánidos y asélidos, que se encuentran tanto en aguas superfi ciales como en hábitats hipogeos. La región geográfi ca con mayor número de especies es el noreste, de Chihuahua a Tamaulipas, en tanto que carecen de registros toda la vertiente del Pacífi co y algunos estados del centro y sur del país.
