ANT TRIBE ANT TRIBE A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts in Art By Yan Zhao Shenyang Aerospace University Bachelor of Engineering in Industrial Design, 2005 August 2012 University of Arkansas ABSTRACT “Ant Tribe” describes the post-80s generation university graduates who live together in poor conditions without social security in communities around China's major metropolises. They dream of a better life in big cities but struggle with low–paying jobs. These struggling “elites” have become the fourth weak social group, after peasants, migrant workers and unemployed people. The reason why these college graduates are compared to ants is that they are like ants: clever, hardworking, politically weak and living in groups. The real world is always different from the ideal world of the “Ant Tribe” in China. They often lose their purposes in a complex society. It is more important for them to recognize the distance between the real and imaginary in order to rethink whether it is a right choice to stay in a big city and try to realize their dreams. -

As many degrees of symbiosis, a phenomenon in which two unrelated organisms coexist over a prolonged period of time while depending on each other, occur, it is not easy to unequivocally define parasitism (Cheng, 1991). -

Through the lens of postmodern theory, the thesis explores the concept and essence of liberal arts education as reflected in the curriculum of the Christian universities through a qualitative methodology, focusing on the analysis of historical archival material. The purpose is to find insights for today’s trend towards reviving liberal arts education in China’s elite universities as a way of countering the influence of utilitarianism and neo-liberalism in an era of economic globalization. ii Acknowledgements The completion of this Master thesis marks the accomplishment of two years’ academic study at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). STEINER, Birgit C. SCHLICK-STEINER & Karl MODER Abstract We present a morphology-based identification engine for ants of the Tetramorium caespitum/impurum complex, em- bedded in the world wide web. Using classificatory discriminant analysis the facility allows one to discriminate wor- kers of nine very similar species, namely T. caespitum (LINNAEUS, 1758), T. impurum (FOERSTER, 1850), T. hungari- cum RÖSZLER, 1935, T. tsushimae EMERY, 1925, and T. spp. A - E. Identification requires 21 characters, captured with high-precision morphometry. The identification engine includes verbal and graphic character definitions as well as an entry mask for morphometric data. Upon data entry, probability values for the sample's membership to each of the nine species are returned. We recommend users to apply and put on record a probability cut-off. Abstract In this study I examined ant biodiversity in Alberta. Over a two-year period, 41,791 ants were captured in pitfall traps on five sand hills in central Alberta and one adjacent aspen parkland community. Using additional collections, I produced a key to the 92 species of ants known from Alberta, Canada. The central Alberta sand hills had the highest recorded species richness (S = 35) reported in western Canada with local ant species richness inversely related to canopy cover. Forest fires occurred in the sand hills during both years of sampling, allowing me to examine the response of ants to fire. -
Executive Summary
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The U.S.-China Trade and Economic Relationship China is now the second-largest economy in the world and the world’s largest manufacturer. Its market exceeds that of the United States in industries such as automobiles, mobile handsets, and per- sonal computers. Although Chinese leaders acknowledge the need to balance their economy by increasing domestic consumption, China continues to maintain an export-driven economy with poli- cies that subsidize Chinese companies and undervalue the renminbi (RMB). While the RMB rose by roughly 6 percent in nominal terms over the last year, it is still widely believed to be substantially undervalued. For the first eight months of 2011, the U.S. trade deficit with China increased 9 percent over the same pe- riod in 2010. The U.S. trade deficit with China is now more than half of the total U.S. trade deficit with the world. In the year to date ending August 2011, the United States exported about $13.4 billion in advanced technology products to China, but imported over $81.1 billion in advanced technology products from China, for a deficit of about $67.7 billion. This is a 17 percent increase in the advanced technology products deficit for the same period over the previous year, ending in August 2010. The Chinese government’s special treatment of state-owned en- terprises (SOEs) is of particular concern to U.S. businesses, as it can overcome comparative advantages of competitors, thereby harming American economic interests. China’s SOEs are also an issue of contention in government procurement, as China seeks to wall off a large portion of its economy from foreign competition. -

Myrmecological News 12 219-235 Vienna, September 2009 Social parasitism among ants: a review (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Alfred BUSCHINGER Abstract The latest review of social parasitism in ants was published in 1990. Since then, comparatively few new parasitic species have been discovered, but research has progressed our knowledge of the evolution of social parasitism and the mecha- nisms involved in the maintenance of parasitic relations between species. Temporary social parasitism, slave-making, inquilinism and xenobiosis are confirmed as the primary manifestations of ant social parasitism. So-called intraspecific social parasitism should be clearly set off against the obligatory interspecific relations of social parasite and host species. A few evolutionary transitions from one of the interspecific forms to another do occur, mainly from slave-making to a derived, workerless state. Nevertheless there is no evidence for the evolution of all types of social parasitism towards inquilinism via multiple pathways as had been formerly suggested. Emery's rule sensu lato has been confirmed by mole- cular techniques. Host-parasite recognition is mediated by cuticular signatures and involves imprinting. Increasingly, social parasitic ants are considered interesting with respect to understanding conflict and cooperation among ants. Co- evolution of social parasites with the respective host species and influence of social parasites on host populations are inten- sively studied. There are still unanswered questions with respect to the unequal distribution of social parasites among the extant ant subfamilies and genera, as well as their geographic distribution including the lack of slave-makers in the tropics.
