Strongylognathus huberi, esclavista de Tetramorium caespitum, es la primera cita para Cataluña. El género más diversificado es Temnothorax - 13 especies- y ha proporcionado una posible especie nueva y otras (Temnothorax grouvellei, T. kraussei, T. angustulus, T. al- bipennis) que eran conocidas previamente de una o dos localidades en Cataluña. Otra especie parásita social, Bothriomyrmex hispanicus, es relativamente abundante en la zona. El macizo del Montsec merece un estudio más amplio geográficamente (sectores del Montsec de l’Estall, Montsec de Rúbies), ya que ha demostrado ser una zona bien conservada y muy rica mirme- cológicamente. Hypotheses: I would argue that social parasitism, whether in humans or ants societies, is based partly on self-interest and nature. Introduction This paper will attempt to bring to light a new study proposed by Professor Anil Hira in the field of bioeconomics studies. Though other nonhuman social societies, such as honeybees, can be used to draw parallels to human societies, in this paper I will focus specifically on ant social societies that are more “than a hundred million years older than humans” (Gordon, 2010, p.1). The reason I have decided to study ants and human societies is because both societies are the two most successful social organizations on the planet. Ants are one of the “most highly social of all organisms” (Wilson, 1991, p. 14) and dominate the insect world. Furthermore, like humans, ants succeed because they communicate effectively and efficiently (Hölldobler & Wilson, 1994). There is abundant literature on biological studies of ants; in the research for this literature review, I have selected some noteworthy literature on ant behaviour that I believe will 1 help to initiate a discussion on ant behaviour. The literature review includes the work of Hölldobler & Wilson, 1994, 2011; Gordon, 1999, 2010; Sudd, 1967; Moffett, 2010; Bourke & Franks, 1995; Hugh, 1967; Abbott, Lach & Parr, 2010; Gotwald, 1995 and Deslippe, 2010. -

Nansei Islands Biological Diversity Evaluation Project Report 1 Chapter 1
Introduction WWF Japan’s involvement with the Nansei Islands can be traced back to a request in 1982 by Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh. The “World Conservation Strategy”, which was drafted at the time through a collaborative effort by the WWF’s network, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), posed the notion that the problems affecting environments were problems that had global implications. Furthermore, the findings presented offered information on precious environments extant throughout the globe and where they were distributed, thereby providing an impetus for people to think about issues relevant to humankind’s harmonious existence with the rest of nature. One of the precious natural environments for Japan given in the “World Conservation Strategy” was the Nansei Islands. The Duke of Edinburgh, who was the President of the WWF at the time (now President Emeritus), naturally sought to promote acts of conservation by those who could see them through most effectively, i.e. pertinent conservation parties in the area, a mandate which naturally fell on the shoulders of WWF Japan with regard to nature conservation activities concerning the Nansei Islands. This marked the beginning of the Nansei Islands initiative of WWF Japan, and ever since, WWF Japan has not only consistently performed globally-relevant environmental studies of particular areas within the Nansei Islands during the 1980’s and 1990’s, but has put pressure on the national and local governments to use the findings of those studies in public policy. Unfortunately, like many other places throughout the world, the deterioration of the natural environments in the Nansei Islands has yet to stop. -

Friedrich Submitted to the Graduate Faculty in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Biology (Ecology track) The University of Toledo May 2010 Controlled burning and mowing are among the most common forms of disturbance in prairie grasslands. Extensive studies on vegetative responses to fire, grazing, and mowing have been investigated, however, there is a lack of information on how animals and particularly insects are affected by these disturbances. Ants in particular play vital ecological roles in nutrient cycling, soil structure and turnover, predation, and seed dispersal, but few studies have assessed ant response to land management practices in prairie ecosystems. This research will assess the short-term impacts of controlled burning and mowing on ant communities. Ants were sampled in 17 prairie sites, divided into three treatments (burn, control, mow) within the Oak Openings Region in Ohio. -

Il s’agit d’une fourmi parasite de colonies de fourmis du genre Tetramorium Mayr, 1855. Les nouvelles stations sont situées en milieu dunaire sur le littoral médocain. Une liste de 40 espèces de fourmis qui fréquentent cet environnement est donnée. Mots-clés - Hyménoptères, Formicidae, Strongylognathus huberi. Introduction Il existe actuellement 230 espèces décrites de fourmis qui sont des parasites sociaux, soit environ 2 % de toutes les espèces de fourmis connues (BUSCHINGER , 2009). On peut définir le parasitisme social comme la coexistence au sein d’une même colonie de deux espèces de fourmis dont l’une est parasite de l’autre. Les modalités du parasitisme peuvent prendre diverses formes. Il peut être, selon les espèces, temporaire ou bien permanent. Les adaptations morphologiques et comportementales de l’espèce parasite peuvent être plus ou moins importantes. D’une manière générale, les espèces parasites sont plus rares et plus difficiles à détecter lors d’inventaires faunistiques. Au cours de l’été 2012, la persévérance de l’un d’entre nous (CF) a permis la découverte de plusieurs colonies de Strongylognathus huberi Forel, 1874 à Lacanau- Océan (commune de Lacanau). -

LeBoeuf Abstract Trophallaxis is a complex social fluid exchange emblematic of social insects and of ants in particular. Trophallaxis behaviors are present in approximately half of all ant genera, distributed over 11 subfamilies. Across biological life, intra- and inter-species exchanged fluids tend to occur in only the most fitness-relevant behavioral contexts, typically transmitting endogenously produced molecules adapted to exert influence on the receiver’s physiology or behavior. Despite this, many aspects of trophallaxis remain poorly understood, such as the prevalence of the different forms of trophallaxis, the components transmitted, their roles in colony physiology and how these behaviors have evolved. With this review, we define the forms of trophallaxis observed in ants and bring together current knowledge on the mechanics of trophallaxis, the contents of the fluids transmitted, the contexts in which trophallaxis occurs and the roles these behaviors play in colony life. We identify six contexts where trophallaxis occurs: nourishment, short- and long-term decision making, immune defense, social maintenance, aggression, and inoculation and maintenance of the gut microbiota. Though many ideas have been put forth on the evolution of trophallaxis, our analyses support the idea that stomodeal trophallaxis has become a fixed aspect of colony life primarily in species that drink liquid food and, further, that the adoption of this behavior was key for some lineages in establishing ecological dominance. -

Developing Biodiverse Green Roofs for Japan: Arthropod and Colonizer Plant Diversity on Harappa and Biotope Roofs

Nomura URBAN NATURALIST Developing Biodiverse Green Roofs for Japan: Arthropod and Colonizer Plant Diversity on Harappa and Biotope Roofs Ayako Nagase1,*, Yoriyuki Yamada2, Tadataka Aoki2, and Masashi Nomura3 Abstract - Urban biodiversity is an important ecological goal that drives green-roof in- stallation. We studied 2 kinds of green roofs designed to optimize biodiversity benefits: the Harappa (extensive) roof and the Biotope (intensive) roof. The Harappa roof mimics vacant-lot vegetation. It is relatively inexpensive, is made from recycled materials, and features community participation in the processes of design, construction, and mainte- nance. The Biotope roof includes mainly native and host plant species for arthropods, as well as water features and stones to create a wide range of habitats. This study is the first to showcase the Harappa roof and to compare biodiversity on Harappa and Biotope roofs. Arthropod species richness was significantly greater on the Biotope roof. The Harappa roof had dynamic seasonal changes in vegetation and mainly provided habitats for grassland fauna. In contrast, the Biotope roof provided stable habitats for various arthropods. Herein, we outline a set of testable hypotheses for future comparison of these different types of green roofs aimed at supporting urban biodiversity. Introduction Rapid urban growth and associated anthropogenic environmental change have been identified as major threats to biodiversity at a global scale (Grimm et al. 2008, Güneralp and Seto 2013). Green roofs can partially compensate for the loss of green areas by replacing impervious rooftop surfaces and thus, contribute to urban biodiversity (Brenneisen 2006). -

The internal sac of P. maculicollis bears hand saw-like spines, which are arranged in a row. Healing wounds were found on the vagina of this species, whose females were collected in the field during a repro- ductive season. However, the number of the wounds is low in comparison to the number of the spines.
