For over a quarter-century the Friends of Acadia Benefit Auction has provided essential support for programs that directly benefit Acadia National Park. From its memorable beginnings as a fine art sale at the Northeast Harbor Neighborhood House to last year’s 25th Anniversary, this has been a special event that strengthens the personal connection each of us feels for this magnificent place. Acadia is unique among national parks, having been created by private donations of land by farsighted individuals. The legacy of private support continues, and today the great majority of contributions for our work comes from people like you who treasure Acadia. For 29 years, preserving this jewel of a park has been the sole focus of Friends of Acadia, and we are grateful to each person whose stewardship makes it possible. The Benefit Auction Chair Courtney Urfer Thompson and committee volunteers have been working throughout the year to make this a spectacular evening. We appreciate the volunteers, Benefit Patrons, and Business Sponsors who make the Benefit Auction possible. A special “thank you” goes to the many artists, individuals, and businesses who contributed the fantastic auction items in this preview catalog. By participating in the Benefit Auction—by bidding on live or silent auction items at the event, bidding online until August 18, sending in an absentee bid, or by simply attending the event or making a donation in support of it—you will make a real and lasting difference in the protection of Acadia. We will use proceeds from the Benefit Auction to support new and ongoing programs in Acadia that protect natural and cultural resources, engage youth, and contribute to a quality visitor experience in the park. Funds contributed during this year’s Paddle Raise will help Acadia National Park restore historic vistas along the carriage roads and park loop road—see details on page 10. Let’s all celebrate Acadia this evening! Through your purchases and your presence, you are continuing the legacy of preservation for our beloved park. With appreciation, David R. MacDonald Edward L. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Salzburg is the birthplace of Wolfgang Mozart and was the filming location for much of the beloved musical. You and 3 guests will stay at Schloss Leopoldskron, dubbed the “Sound of Music” palace because it was the site of several outdoor scenes in the film and its “Venetian Room” was completely replicated to be used as a setting for the ballroom scene.
