This area has been used as a guide for the study, which has not been constrained by the boundary in exploring the reasonable options for development. It includes land to the west, south and east of the existing village of Whitchurch and stretches south towards Publow and Woollard. Emerging Whitchurch Strategic Framework: November 2018 11 Whitchurch Village Neighbourhood Plan Whitchurch Village Neighbourhood Plan seeks to guide development in the village until 2042, and was approved in December 2017. The overall vision for the village is: to remain as a distinct, stable, separate and sustainable community in a valuable Green Belt setting; to work with developers and the new communities to achieve improvements and integration for all its residents. The main objectives of the Plan are to maintain the village identity and increase sustainability, manage and maintain the Green Buffer, ensure that new development is integrated within the village, set out impacts on the A37 and seek improvements for the community arising from future growth. There is a established hierarchy of plans and once adopted, the strategic policies in the JSP as well as the Local Plan will take precedence over the Neighbourhood Plan. The Neighbourhood plan will then need to be updated to conform to the strategic policies of both the JSP and Local Plan . Fig. 5. The Whitchurch Village Character Assessment identifies two characters within the search area including; 1- east of the village farm clusters associated with Horseworld, 5- A37 Bristol Road. Also, two of the Rural Fringes RF1- south of the village, RF2- North East- Stockwood Vale overlap the search area. The diagrams opposite illustrate the four character areas in relation to the study search area boundary. The first halt was at the d|Iiuri[h tif lelhitttmntli which Mr. Freeman described as an excellent example of the earliest type of the Somersetshire churches of which there were any remains, and was the best worthy of study of any he knew, retaining, as it did, many of its original features, which in many cases had been very much altered. It was of the early local type, when the cross form seemed to have been very common ; and this form was preserved in this case, whereas in many of the earlier churches it had given way to the predominant west-end towdi*, as at St, Cuthbert^s, at Wells. This church at Whitchurch was an excellent example of the transitional style towards the end of the 12 th or the beginning of the 13th century, the corner shafts being among the best specimens of transitional work anywhere.

Perhaps, if we are ready for a welcome new look at the place-names of the Bristol area: “reworking” what is already known, and surprising us with unexpected and sometimes humourous insights. The beautiful cover image of the Clifton Suspension Bridge leaves us uncertain where we are standing, and momentarily confused by a negative view “through the looking glass”. Whether this effect was accidental, or whimsically deliberate, it is bound to catch the potential reader's attention! This attractive volume, printed by 4word, Bristol, is the first of a new venture published by the English Place-Name Society. Professor Richard Coates (of the University of the West of England, Bristol) is currently the Society's Honorary Director and General Editor, as he modestly omits to tell us on the back cover. Pinpointing a gap in the place-names market, Coates is deliberately aiming for a new readership in large centres of population: Brighton and Hove, and Leeds, are also available now in this city-names series. Here we have names chosen from a 'greater Bristol', including the city itself. There are some 200 Gloucestershire names, 100 from Somerset, and the remaining 40-odd are from historic Bristol proper.     THE BATH REGION from Late Prehistory to the Middle Ages Mick Aston Introduction This essay is concerned with a city in its region over a long period. Bath is a good example to study, for two reasons. Firstly, the city itself and the region around have been well examined by anti­ quarians over several centuries - very many sites have been located from late prehistoric to medieval times. Much of the early landscape also remains in the form of earthworks and abandoned field systems. Secondly, Bath itself has been occupied for a long, but reasonably certain· length of time. Unlike most towns and cities, something is known of the origins of the place and how and why it developed. Its close relationship with its hinterland over two millennia has, however, not been studied and that is the aim of this essay. The Physical Background Bath lies at the southern end of the Cotswolds, on the river Avon and 30km inland from the Severn estuary. The surrounding region is very 'unEnglish' in terms of its scenery. The city lies in a deep valley with steep slopes all around, rising to almost level flat-topped plateaux at Lansdown (to the north-west), Charmy Down (to the north-east), Bathampton, Claverton and Combe Downs (to the east and south-east), and Odd Down and Southdown (to the south and south-west). There is little flat land in the stream and river valleys in the Bath region, except at Bath itself and around Bathford and Bathampton. The sides of the valleys are steep, with deep combes everywhere.

The purpose of this phase of the work has been to more clearly establish the capacity and strategic development requirements at each strategic development location which has been used to inform JSP Policy 7. Accessing prospects for delivery The previous iteration of the Joint Spatial Plan – Towards an Emerging Spatial Strategy (TESS) (Nov. 2016) included a range of potential Strategic Development Locations across the West of England and assigned a broad dwelling capacity to each. This work was supported by evidence published in the ‘Assessment of Strategic Development Locations – Beyond Settlement Boundaries – Locational Dashboards’. The templates presented in this document are a continuation of this earlier work. For each of the proposed SDLs (listed in the table below), a template is provided which focusses on the delivery challenges and opportunities faced at each SDL and the approximate scale of development potential achievable.

START from Pensford Post Office and walk along Church Street turning RIGHT up the lane (Culvery Lane) before The Rising Sun. NOTE: The blue memorial plaque on the Pensford Post Office building commemorating Bernard Stanley “Acker” Bilk MBE (see Walks 1 and 3 for further details). NOTE: The height marker for the Flood Level 1 on the building at the corner which commemorates the 10th-11th July 1968 flood which swept away the main bridge across the A37. NOTE: If you have a drink later at The Rising Sun, you will see inside the pub that the waterline from the 1968 flood is still evident. BB. Go UNDER Pensford Viaduct 2 and through a kissing gate into Culvery Wood 3. NOTE: As you do so, look at the date of 2002 on the viaduct downpipe hopper when maintenance work was carried out. NOTE: The sign at the entrance to Culvery Wood which was acquired by the Woodland Trust in 1997. CC. FOLLOW the footpath DOWNHILL and through a kissing gate and LEFT into a field alongside the River Chew 4. NOTE: This is part of the Three Peaks Way, a circular walk of around 26 km (16 miles) including Pensford, Chew Magna and Clutton. The Three Peaks are Maes Knoll, Knowle Hill and Blackberry Hill. DD. FOLLOW the footpath through another four fields to arrive at the small hamlet of Bye Mills 5.
