19 Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait American, 1819-1905 Solitude, Eagle Bay, Adirondacks, NY, 1883 21 Signed A. F. Tait. NA. and dated N.Y. 83 (lr); inscribed as titled on the backing Samuel Lancaster Gerry Oil on canvas American, 1813-1891 20 x 30 inches Apple Blossoms, circa 1860 Provenance: Signed S. L. Gerry (lr) Kennedy Galleries, New York; inv. A12862 Oil on board Herbert Shuttleworth, Amsterdam, NY 12 1/4 x 18 inches Thence by descent to the present owner Exhibited: New York, Hawthorne Fine Art LLC, Considered one of America’s finest animal painters, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait made his first trip to the Adirondacks in 1852. Life in the Open Air: American An enthusiastic sportsman, outdoorsman and amateur naturalist, he was inspired by the rustic terrain of the Adirondacks Painters Explore the White well into the later years of his life, spending many summers painting and sketching there. He built a summer camp on South Mountains, 1840-1910, Pond near Long Lake, eventually establishing a year-round home there named Woodside. While Tait lived much of the time Dec. 12, 2007-Feb. 9, 2008 in the Adirondacks, he also maintained a studio in New York City and spent his last years in Yonkers, NY. He painted in and C around Upper and Lower Chateaugay Lakes in the northern Adirondacks by 1852 and around Raquette Lake in Hamilton County $1,200-1,800 by the early 1870s. Just north of Old Forge in Herkimer County, NY, Eagle Bay is roughly thirty-five miles from South Pond. See Illustration

The panoramic view in the present work captures the majesty of the Adirondack region that so appealed to the artist. Perhaps pausing to drink in the pristine water, the three deer are rendered with the sensitivity characteristic of Tait’s paintings of wildlife. “America owes a heavy debt of gratitude to A. F. Tait,” wrote the editor of Antiques in 1933, “Though born an Englishman, he had lived in this country long enough, and loved it deeply enough, to record pictorially distinctive aspects of its life with penetrating sympathy and undeviating accuracy of detail.”

In 1931, Daniel Chester French was commissioned to sculpt a bronze portrait bust of Daniel Webster. Incomplete at the time of his death in October 1931, the final bronze was finished by French’s daughter, Margaret French Cresson. It stands by the Congregational Church in Franklin, New Hampshire, where Webster was born.

French was convinced that the monument should include a full-length standing figure of the orator, rather than the proposed portrait bust. By June 1931 he had already made some preliminary sketches or maquettes, which may possibly include the present work.

In a letter from July 11, 1931 to Senator George H. Moses, the sculptor wrote, “I am particularly interested in this monument to Webster, so much so that I have been led to make some sketch models, and the more I have considered the subject, the more I am convinced that if it is possible to afford it, there should be a statue rather than a bust or a relief. I feel so strongly about this, and I have developed so keen a desire to deal with the problem, that I feel disposed to make almost any concessions in my price to meet the appropriation available for the monument.”

We extend our gratitude to Chesterwood, the country home and studio of Daniel Chester French. C A Prominent New York Family $6,000-8,000 See Illustration 78 part 79

Doyle is honored to auction the collection of award-winning costume designer WILLA KIM and her husband, writer and illustrator WILLIAM PÈNE DU BOIS, son of the prominent American artist Guy Pène du Bois.

Willa Kim (1917-2016) The daughter of Korean immigrants, Wullah Mei Ok Kim (she later changed the spelling to Willa) grew up in Los Angeles and dreamed of becoming a fashion illustrator and painter. After graduating from Belmont High School, where she was an art editor of the yearbook, she studied art at Los Angeles City College and received a scholarship to the Chouinard Art Institute (now the California Institute of the Arts, CalArts).

She worked briefly as a fashion illustrator at the May Company department store in 1942 before joining Paramount Studios. There she worked with the famed costume designers Barbara Karinska and Raoul Pène du Bois on such films as Lady in the Dark (1944) starring Ginger Rogers.

In 1945, Broadway beckoned and Willa worked with Raoul on her first stage musical, Are you with It? She returned to Los Angeles to study art with Rico LeBrun, a leading modernist, at the Jepson Art Institute, but in 1950 came back to New York to work with Raoul on a number of successful Broadway productions, including Gypsy, The Music Man and Bells Are Ringing. On a visit to France, Willa and her friend, artist Margaret Stark, were invited to spend Thanksgiving with Raoul and the Pène du Bois family. It was during

this visit that Willa met Raoul’s cousin, William Pène du Bois, a writer and Willa is credited with having introduced two innovations to costume illustrator of children’s books. William Pène du Bois (1916-1993) William Sherman Pène du Bois was born in Nutley, New Jersey in 1916 into a family of artists. His father was the famed landscape and portrait painter Guy Pène du Bois, his mother was a designer of children’s clothing, and his older sister Yvonne was also a painter. The family moved to France when William was eight, and he attended the Lycée Hoche in Versailles and the Lycée de Nice in Nice, after which the family returned to Nutley. He was awarded a scholarship to the Carnegie Technical School of Architecture, but upon the sale of a book that he had written and illustrated while on vacation, he decided to forego college in pursuit of a career in books. In 1936, his first book, Elisabeth, the Ghost Cow, was published.

William entered the United States Army in 1941 and worked during the War as an artist and correspondent for Yank magazine, as well as editing the camp newspaper and illustrating strategic maps. Having written and illustrated five books prior to the War, William published his sixth book, The Twenty-One Balloons, in 1947. It was a fantastic tale of a retired

mathematics teacher’s hot-air balloon journey to Krakatoa and the airborne escape when the volcano explodes. The book was honored with the 1948 Newbury Award for best children’s book by the American Library Association. His prolific output includes a series inspired by the seven deadly sins, as well as tales of adventure and mystery with anthropomorphic animals cast as the heroes. He was twice a runner-up for the Caldecott Medal, which recognizes picture books for children: Bear Party (1952) and Lion (1957). The New York Times Book Review named his 1971 Bear Circus one of the ten best children’s books of the year.

In addition to his own works, William also illustrated books written by other authors, including works by Jules Verne, John Steinbeck, Issac Bashevis Singer, Rumer Godden and Claire Hutchet Bishop.

In 1953, William was one of the founding editors, and the first art director, of influential literary magazine, The Paris Review, along with Thomas Guinzberg, Harold L. Humes, Peter Matthiessen, John P.C. Train and George Plimpton, whose 1955 book, The Rabbit’s Umbrella, featured illustrations by William.

Following William’s marriage to Willa in 1955, the couple lived in New York until Photo by www.TomGrimes.com 1973, when William moved to France, where he lived for the rest of his life. 44 DOYLE • APRIL 5,5, 20172017 •• NEWNEW YORKYORK 17AM01-Willa-Kim-Bio.qxp_Layout 1 3/13/17 10:34 AM Page 6
