Quaternary Bat Diversity in the Dominican Republic

SIMMONS1 ABSTRACT The fossil record of bats is extensive in the Caribbean, but few fossils have previously been reported from the Dominican Republic. In this paper, we describe new collections of fossil bats from two flooded caves in the Dominican Republic, and summarize previous finds from the Island of Hispaniola. The new collections were evaluated in the context of extant and fossil faunas of the Greater Antilles to provide information on the evolution of the bat community of Hispaniola. Eleven species were identified within the new collections, including five mormoopids (Mormoops blainvillei, †Mormoops magna, Pteronotus macleayii, P. parnellii, and P. quadridens), five phyllostomids (Brachy- phylla nana, Monophyllus redmani, Phyllonycteris poeyi, Erophylla bombifrons, and Phyllops falcatus), and one natalid (Chilonatalus micropus). All of these species today inhabitant Hispaniola with the exception of †Mormoops magna, an extinct species previously known only from the Quaternary of Cuba, and Pteronotus macleayii, which is currently known only from extant populations in Cuba and Jamaica, although Quaternary fossils have also been recovered in the Bahamas. Differences between the fossil faunas and those known from the island today suggest that dispersal and extirpa- tion events, perhaps linked to climate change or stochastic events such as hurricanes, may have played roles in structuring the modern fauna of Hispaniola. 1 Division of Vertebrate Zoology (Mammalogy), American Museum of Natural History. -

Venkat Sankar 2019 1 Mammals of Central Mexico Juan Cruzado Cortes and Venkat Sankar (author; [email protected]) August 5-10, 2019 Beautiful scenery at Barrancas de Aguacatitla; Mexican Volcano Mouse; Mexican Ground Squirrel Introduction While searching for mammals in Oaxaca this March, Juan told me that a mammalogist friend of his in Tabasco, Dr. Rafael Avila Flores, had found some amazing bats in an area of karst near the state’s border with Chiapas. These included a number of impressive and distinctive species I’ve long wanted to see, like the Sword-nosed Bat and White-winged Vampire Bat. I had to visit, and with few breaks this summer thanks to academic commitments, this was the perfect choice for a long weekend’s trip. Juan suggested we spend a few days in Mexico City with another biologist friend, Melany Aguilar Lopez, to find several endemics of the Mexican Plateau, and then connect to Tabasco. And so a plan was formed! A Photographic Field Guide to the Bats of the West Indian Island of Dominica Lloyd W. Towers III Dominica 2007 Dr. James Woolley Dr. Robert Wharton Texas A&M University 1 ABSTRACT No current field guide incorporates photographs and descriptions of all of the species of bats known to occur on the island of Dominica. The guide presented here is based on bats captured using mist nets and insect nets at various locations on the Archbold Tropical Research and Education Center and the Morne Trois Pitons National Park in Dominica. The field guide provides several pictures that show important identifying features of the five bat species that were captured. INTRODUCTION There are 12 species of bats found on Dominica. These are as follows: Pteronotus davyi, Noctilio leporinus, Brachyphylla cavernarum, Monophyllus plethodon, Artibeus jamaicensis, Ardops nichollsi, Sturnira lilium, Natalus stramineus, Eptesicus fuscus, Myotis dominicensis, Tadarida brasiliensis, and Molossus molossus (Genoways et al. 2001). Several field guides have been created for Antillean bats, but there is not a field guide with photographs specifically for the bats of Dominica. Gannon et al. (2005) provided an illustrated field guide entitled Bats of Puerto Rico, and it provided illustrations and descriptions of N. leporinus, A. jamaicensis, B. cavernarum, E. fuscus, T. brasiliensis, and M. molossus. However, there were not many photographs of the bats and the field guide was only concerned with Puerto Rico. Baker et al. (1984) provided an identification key with photographs of N. leporinus, B. cavernarum, A. jamaicensis, A. nichollsi, S. lilium, M. dominicensis, T. brasiliensis, and M. molossus in their publication Occasional Papers: Field Guide to Antillean Bats, but again, the focus of the publication was not on Dominica specifically. -
Bats in the Subgenus Natalus

NUMBER 1977 DECEMBER 22, 1959 Bats of the Subgenus NYatalus BY GEORGE G. GOODWIN The geographical distribution of the bats in the subgenus Natalus is now known to be from Baja California, southern Sonora, southern Chihuahua, and Tamaulipas, Mexico, south through Central America to the Canal Zone in Panama. The only records for the mainland of South America are San Esteban, Venezuela, and Natal and Minas Gerais, Brazil. In the West Indies its range extends from Curasao and Trinidad north to the Dominican Republic and Cuba. With the exception of a difference in the size of Natalus major there is a close similarity in the external appearance of all the named forms in the group. Climatic conditions do cause some local variation in color; humid tropical regions produce a predominance of dark reddish specimens, while pale buffy specimens are characterisic of dry arid re- gions. Cranial characters, however, are sufficiently well developed to identify named forms. Up to the present time no one has attempted to make a first-hand study of the named forms in the subgenus Natalus or to determine the status of the type species, Natalus stramineus Gray. Walter W. Dal- quest (1950) published a comprehensive review of the genera in the family Natalidae and listed a brief summary of described forms de- rived from the literature. Gray (1838, p. 496), in his six-line description of the genotype, gave no inkling of the source from which he derived the name Natalus.
