Millions of people – especially those living in rural areas in de- veloping countries – collect these products daily, and many regard selling them as a means of earning a living. This Agrodok presents an overview of the major commercial wild plant products from Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific. It explains their significance in traditional health care, social and ritual values, and forest conservation. It is designed to serve as a useful source of basic information for local forest dependent communities, especially those who harvest, process and market these products. We also hope that this Agrodok will help arouse the awareness of the potential of NTFPs among development organisations, local NGOs, government officials at local and regional level, and extension workers assisting local communities. Case studies from Cameroon, Ethiopia, Central and South Africa, the Pacific, Colombia and Suriname have been used to help illustrate the various important aspects of commercial NTFP harvesting. -

Historical Setting of the Guianan Plant Heritage The Guianas are embedded high in the green shoulder of northern South America, an area once known as the "Wild Coast". They are the only non-Latin American countries in South America, and are situated just north of the Equator in a configuration with the Amazon River of Brazil to the south and the Orinoco River of Venezuela to the west. The three Guianas comprise, from west to east, the countries of Guyana (area: 83,000 square miles; capital: Georgetown), Surinam (area: 63, 037 square miles; capital: Paramaribo) and French Guiana (area: 34, 740 square miles; capital: Cayenne). Perhaps the earliest physical contact between Europeans and the present-day Guianas occurred in 1500 when the Spanish navigator Vincente Yanez Pinzon, after discovering the Amazon River, sailed northwest and entered the Oyapock River, which is now the eastern boundary of French Guiana. -

Landrum (Myrtaceae): anatomia do caule e da folha de uma planta medicinal Dayana Lacerda Custódio1; Rosana Marta Kolb2; Terezinha de Jesus Faria3; Edmilson Bianchini4 Abstract The study of medicinal plants involves several areas of science. Anatomy contributes to species identification and consequently, with quality control of plant product. This paper describes the leaf and stem anatomy of Pimenta pseudocaryophyllus (Gomes) L.R. Landrum (Myrtaceae), collected in Seasonal Semideciduous Forest. The studied organs presented uniseriate epidermis covered by a thick cuticle and secretory cavities. The stem showed a continuous ring of vascular tissues around the pith, with phloem on both sides of the xylem. The leaf was hypostomatic, with trichomes on the abaxial face, with bifacial mesophyll and amphicrival vascular bundle, surrounded by a sclerenchymatous pericycle in the petiole and in the midrib. Among the histochemical tests, positive results were obtained for lipids, phenolic compounds, starch and calcium oxalate (druses). The species had anatomical features typical of the family and the secretory cavities present in leaves and stems were related to the secondary metabolites detected. Keywords: Secondary metabolites. The database presents and describes the flora found within the land site of a proposed sustainable resort-residential development of advance design designated as Villa Mi Terruño (VMT). It has been expanded to cover general flora of Culebra. FMT publishes this photographic website to offer Culebra residents, our island visitors, guest from Puerto Rico or afar and website visitors a visual and learning experience as they enjoy the Flora of Culebra in its entire splendor. It will hopefully enrich the visitors and residents life experience as they appreciate and better understand their subtropical environment in the Caribbean island of Culebra. The Flora Digital Database will also allow website visitors, students and professional and amateur naturalist to do research and enjoy a specialized photographic database of the dry subtropical Flora of Culebra with ample references. -
Kinetics and Thermodynamics of Dispersed Oil Sorption by Kapok Fiber

The physicochemical characteristics of kapok fiber were investigated using BET, SEM, FTIR, XRD, contact angle and elemental analysis. The oil droplet size distribution at different temperatures was analysed using a Coulter counter, and its relationship with sorption was investigated. The effects of dosage, hydraulic retention time and temperature, on the sorption performance were studied. The result indicates that the sorption of dispersed oil by kapok fiber is spontaneous, endothermic and agreed with the pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics. The amount of oil that could be removed is about 28.5 %, while that of water is less than 1 % of the original amount (0.5 dm 3). Kapok is a promising natural hydrophobic fiber for dispersed oil removal from oily wastewater. Keywords: dispersed oil, hydrophobic, kapok fiber, kinetics of sorption, thermodynamics of sorption Introduction There has been an increasing concern over the presence of dispersed oil in oily wastewater [1]. Most of the earlier and related works are mainly concerned about the removal of floating oil from the surface of water, and to be more specific, in the remediation of marine oil spills caused by the accidental release of petroleum from tankers and drilling rigs. The usual steps are to employ boomers and skimmers, to contain and collect the oil, and then to apply dispersant on the remaining oil slick to break it up into small droplets that would dilute and travel to deeper parts of the ocean and away from the coastline [2]. -

Weaver Abstract St. John, and probably the Cnnamon Bay watershed, has a hstory of human use datng to 1700 B.C. The most notable mpacts, however, occurred from 1730 to 1780 when sugar cane and cotton producton peaked on the sland. As agrculture was abandoned, the sland regenerated n secondary forest, and n 1956, the Vrgn Islands Natonal Park was created. From 1983 to 2003, the staff of the Internatonal Insttute of Trop cal Forestry montored 16 plots, stratfied by elevaton and topography, n the Cnnamon Bay watershed. -
