The Ancestry of Susannah Moore, my Great (x8) Grandmother (born Susannah Drew in 1676 at Bishop's Cannings, ) By Mark Wareham Last updated 20th January 2014 The information contained in these spreadsheets is gathered from several sources. I have tried to use recognised source material where it is available such as Visitation reports of the Harleian Society of the 16th and 17th centuries, wills, county histories or other reference books. There is some information from the internet such as Wikipedia Or some independent study and where that is the case I have tried to point that out as it is generally less reliable. For maternal ancestral branches refer to the worksheets arranged in alphabetical order according to family name.

Ancestral connection - I had some doubts about whether Henry Drew was connected to John Drew of Southbroome below. However the discovery that Annes (or Alice) Burden's possible elder brother went to Oxford at about the same time as Henry's possible elder brother John seems to have made this link more likely than not. In favour of the connection - * Henry's marriage to Annes (or Alice) Burden - the Burden family were landowners in the Bishops Cannings area. * Link between the Burden family at Oxford and Henry and his brother John, at the same time. * Annes Burden was probably baptised just two miles from Bishops Cannings at Stanton St Bernard. * Henry used the names Thomas and John which, along with his name, were ones used in the Drew of Southbroome family. * The dates, places and ages link. * Henry settled just four miles from Southbroome and I can find no evidence of any other Drew family in the area other than those of Devizes. * There is no alternative lineage for Henry son of John Drew of Southbroome that I have discovered. * There was some wealth in Henry's line as is evidenced from the fact that his son and grandson's property was administered or inherited through a will. Doubts about the connection - * Henry's wife was recovered as 'Annes' rather than Alice. But she was not Anne and this may be a transcription or recording error. * John said in his will of 1614 that his son Henry would inherit, as would his wife if he dies, when he 'hereafter marries'. However Henry Drew of Horton married in 1606. * The fact that Henry Drew matriculated in 1608, a few months after his wife had their first child and just over a year after he married. However this is not impossible. On balance and despite the continuing questions I believe that this lineage is more likely than not and so have published this history on that basis and until otherwise proven wrong by new facts.

Southbroom House, Wikipedia The first known owner of Southbroom House was John Drew (or Trew), a wealthy Clothier from Devon. When John Drew occupied the Estate in 1501 it consisted of the House, a dovehouse, small park, orchards, and gardens. A small pond was thought to have existed on the state at that time although this was not shown in later records. The could probably have some connection with 'Drews Pond' which is on the outskirts of Devizes. The estate passed to John Drew’s grandson who was also called John. Then he died in 1614, the estate passed to his son, Robert.'

The Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Magazine - Page 133 by Edward Hungerford Goddard, Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society - Natural history - 1860 (Google Books) Trewe? It has been stated in Vol. iii. p. 177 of this Magazine, that in a deed of temp. Henry VII., the first Lessee of Southbroom is called John Trewe; and that this is the oldest form of the name at this place. On this point our Editor has observed to me that he is not acquainted with Trewe as a Wiltshire gentilitial name: but that Drew was an ancient and abundant name in the Western, counties, and, as such, still adheres to three parishes which some have considered, but as he thinks quite erroneously, to have been called after the Druids: viz. Drew's Teignton (Co. Devon), Stanton Drew (Co. Som.) and Littleton Drew (Co. Wilts). There were also in North Wilts, Drews of Seagry, temp. Edward III.; and of Ogbourne St. George so late as 1565. He thinks that in the case of John Trewe, above mentioned, there may have been an accidental error by the clerk who wrote the deed, such as often happens either from similarity of sound (as Tenison for Denison, or Tuckett for Duckett), or when a deed is prepared at a distance from the spot. In this case the error seems to be immediately corrected in the deed next following, by the restoration of the proper name Drew, "alias Trewe," as such mistakes, once made, are obliged to be referred to in subsequent documents. The representatives of the Southbroom family repudiate the variation of 7'rttce. The name of William Ferrebe, clerk, and Lawrence Dretce are found in juxta-position so early as 1398, as fellow-commissioners sent to attend a Convention. (Rymer, viii. 54.)

The Drewe family of Devon

Burke's Landed Gentry 1848 Ed … Norman family of DREW, of Drewscliffe, Hayne and Sharpham, in Devon, descending from Richard, Duke of Normandy, the Conqueror's grandfather, … The following is the preamble of the Drew pedigree, as arranged by Ulster, King of Arms, in Dublin, viz, "The pedigree of the ancient and knightly family of Drew of Devonshire, the lineal descendants of Drogo, or Dru, a noble Norman, son of Walter de Ponz, and brother of Richard, ancestor of the Cliffords, who accompanied William the Conqueror into England, and of the several branches &c. &c. This Walter, or William de Ponz, or Ponce, or Pouze was Earl of Arques and Thoulouse, and Third son of Richard, Duke of Normandy, grandfather of William the Conqueror, and came to England with his victorious and Royal nephew, (see Burke's Peerage, Barony of De Clifford.) "He had issue three sons, Walter, Drew and Richard, … But Drew, the second son, was, as Prince expresses himself, the "stirp" of the family of Drew, in Devon, where he had no less than seventy three manors at the time of the Domesday survey, … speaking of the change of the name Drogo to Drew, says: the first parish that taketh name from Teign River, Drew's Teignton, honouring the name of its ancient landlord, DrogodeTeign, by time's continuance mollified into Drew. Through the heiress of Prideaux of Adeston, the Drew family in general descends in a direct line from John, King of England; Dermot McMurrogh, King of Leinster; the King of Connaught; Lewelyne, Prince of all Wales; the King of Man; the Earl Strongbow; Hugh de Laci, Justice of Ireland; the Bigods, Earls of Norfolk; the Genevilles, Lords of Trim, in Ireland; the Mortimors, Earls of March; and the Montacutes, Earls of Salisbury.

* John Drewe to William Drewe and the connection to the Devon family - In the 1623 Visitations of Wiltshire the pedigree only goes as far as to state that the family 'claimeth from the family of Drewe in Devon'. I believe that this link is substantiated because - 1) the Drew family arms recorded and substantiated in the 1623 Visitations are virtually the same as those of the family of Sharpham in Devon (lion passant, ermine). 2) William Drewe of Kene had two sons called John, the senior of which survived and married Jane Crewse. Whilst the junior John's subsequent line is not recorded in the 1564 Visitations of Devon. However the dates fit as well as the third son of William Drewe of Kene would have been born about 1480. 3) John Drew who purchased Southbroom House in about 1500 was a wealthy clothier and was of the right social status to be descended from the Drew's of Devon.

Sir Roger of 1328 was 2nd Earl of March, restored to his grandfather's title. He fought at Crecy in 1346 and was one of the original Knights of the Garter.

Sir Roger of 1287 was 1st Earl of March. Became the lover of Queen Isabella and led a successful revolt against King Edward II. He was hanged at Tyburn in 1330 by the young King Edward III.

Sir Edmund of 1271 was 2nd Baron Mortimer. Edmund was knighted by King Edward at Winchester, and served in the king's Gascon and Scottish campaigns. He was mortally wounded in a skirmish near Builth, and died at Wigmore Castle.

Sir Roger of 1231 was 1st Baron Mortimer. Ally of King Henry III against Simon de Montfort and fought at Lewes and killed de Montfort at Evesham, returning his head to his wife at Wigmore as a gift. Mortimer's tombstone at Wigmore read - "Here lies buried, glittering with praise, Roger the pure, Roger Mortimer the second, called Lord of Wigmore by those who held him dear. While he lived all Wales feared his power, and given as a gift to him all Wales remained his. It knew his campaigns, he subjected it to torment." Orcheston family

I disagree with the above line because there is no reference to Montacute I disagree with this line because the Montacute ancestry is too late and the Mortimer ancestry is alleged to come from 'Will, Earl of March' to connect to an Earl of Salisbury called William. Whilst a first however there was no William who was 'Earl of March'. generation Earl of Salisbury was called William this was not of the Montacute line. The line also does not connect with the correct Mortimer who was Earl of March who descended from the Geneville family.

The following line I support because it corresponds with the description of the Drew family lineage in Burke's Landed Gentry 1848 - (see Drew line page 1). The line below also agrees with a the line of Sir John Wilmot Prideaux in 'A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Peerage and Baronetage of the British Empire by Burke which states that Sir Piercy Prideaux married Isabella daughter of William Montacute, Earl of Salisbury and King of Man. This Earl must be the 2nd generation because the Earls of the 1st creation were not Kings of Man.
