Geisler, with a shared theological heritage, differ in their interpretation of Exod 1:15-21 and Josh 2:1-7 that addresses the ethical issue of lying to save life. -

Christian Wessely Elijah Siegler, Coen. Framing Religion in Amoral Order Baylor University Press, 2016 I would hardly seem the most likely candidate to review a book on the Coen brothers. I have not seen all of their films, and the ones I saw … well, either I did not understand them or they are really as shallow as I thought them to be. With one exception: I did enjoy O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000). And I like A Serious Man (2009). So, two exceptions. And, of course, True Grit (2010) – so, all in all three exceptions1 … come to think of it, there are more that have stuck in my mind in a positive way, obfuscated by Barton Fink (1991) or Burn After Reading (2008). Therefore, I was curious wheth- er Elijah Siegler’s edited collection would change my view on the Coens. Having goog- led for existing reviews of the book that might inspire me, I discovered that none are to be found online, apart from the usual flattery in four lines on the website of Baylor University Press, mostly phrases about the unrivalled quality of Siegler’s book. Turns out I have do all the work by myself. Given that I am not familiar with some of the films used to exemplify some of this book’s theses, I will be brief on some chapters and give more space to those that deal with the films I know. FORMAL ASPECTS Baylor University Press is well established in the fields of philosophy, religion, theol- ogy, and sociology. So far, they have scarcely published in the media field, although personally I found two of their books (Sacred Space, by Douglas E. -

A Serious Man (2009) “Receive with simplicity everything that happens” --Rashi Major Credits: Directors: Joel and Ethan Coen Script: Joel and Ethan Coean Cinematography: Roger Deakins Editing: Roderick Jaynes (pseudonym for Joel and Ethan Coen) Music: Carter Burwell Cast: Michael Stuhlbarg (Larry Gopnik); Richard Kind (Uncle Arthur); Fred Melamed (Sy Abelman); Sari Lennick (Judith Gopnik); Amy Landecker (Mrs. Samsky) Background: Following the success of No Country for Old Men (2007), the Coen brothers felt free to return to an uncharacteristically personal story that they had been thinking about for many years. Set in 1967 in an upper Midwest suburbia like the one outside Minneapolis in which they were raised, A Serious Man draws upon Joel’s and Ethan’s memories as it re-tells the Biblical tale of Job. Although generally praised by critics (earning a Best Picture nomination from the Academy under its newly expanded system of selecting ten movies instead of five), the film, perhaps not surprisingly, did not generate the same buzz as their multiple Oscar-winning Western. Nevertheless, it remains one of their most skillfully crafted works, one that manages to be both painfully funny and deeply disturbing. Its reputation will almost surely grow. Cinematic Elements: 1. The Yiddish prologue, with its narrowed frame, sepia tone, and focused lighting, evokes both the style of silent movies and the vernacular language and storytelling of the Yiddish theatre. Although the Coens have explicitly denied any relevance to the modern story, the prologue clearly resonates with the themes and tone of the rest of A Serious Man. 2. Music: The Coens again collaborate with their favorite composer, Carter Burwell, and the film’s eclectic score—from the Jefferson Airplane’s “Don’t You Want Somebody to Love” to Sidor Belarsky’s melancholy Yiddish song “The Miller’s Tears”—reinforces the film’s shifts from hallucination and dream to comedy and melodrama. -

I. We learn how to help people in crisis (2:11-13). A. Notice what Job’s friends did (11-12). 1. They heard about Job’s trouble (11). 2. They went to be with Job. 3. Their goal was to comfort him. 4. They wept and grieved with Job (12). B. Notice what Job’s friends did not do (13). 1. They did not hide their grief (no plastic smiles!). 2. They did not rush Job. 3. They did not speak to Job seven days and nights. C. Notice some marks of a good friend. 1. A good friend makes personal sacrifices. 2. A good friend is a good listener. 3. A good friend engages in the ministry of presence. 4. A good friend exhibits humility. 5. A good friend is real. II. We learn how NOT to help people in crisis (chapters 3-37). A. Here’s what Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar did (chapters 3-31). 1. They said true things but failed to get all the facts. 2. The problem wasn’t so much what they said but what they didn’t know (11:7-8). 3. They said there had to be sin when there wasn’t (8:4; 11:6; 18:19; 22:5). 4. They preached truth at Job instead of ministering truth to him. -

HUMOR AND PHILOSOPHY IN THE MOVIES OF JOEL AND ETHAN COEN A Report of a Senior Study by Geoffrey Bokuniewicz Major: Writing/Communication Maryville College Spring, 2014 Date approved ___________, by _____________________ Faculty Supervisor Date approved ___________, by _____________________ Division Chair Abstract This is a two-part senior thesis revolving around the works of the film writer/directors Joel and Ethan Coen. The first seven chapters deal with the humor and philosophy of the Coens according to formal theories of humor and deep explication of their cross-film themes. Though references are made to most of their films in the study, the five films studied most in-depth are Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading, and A Serious Man. The study looks at common structures across both the Coens’ comedies and dramas and also how certain techniques make people laugh. Above all, this is a study on the production of humor through the lens of two very funny writers. This is also a launching pad for a prospective creative screenplay, and that is the focus of Chapter 8. Some of my poems may be good (perhaps even very good), some are merely average and far too many are pleasing only to me. I do not pretend to be a great poet; I am just a man who has experienced both joy and grief and has reflected on these in words. I write because I know The God listens who reads my heart; who finds worship in every smile and tear; who receives each joy as praise and who will heal every wound. The words on these pages have sprung from the realization that I have no one on whom I can depend other than God. These poems are cries to Him for help; praise to Him for His wonder; and reflections of the universe He has made for us to enjoy. They are the marks of my passage through this wonderful life He has given me. I hope that in seeing my footsteps your own may be made more sure. These poems are my worship to God. It is my prayer that in reading them you will be encouraged to worship God and praise Him for the life He has given you, regardless of its pain or joy. The Prologue, i, ii J oB is a wealthy Edomite sheikh of long ago, the greatest and most prosperous of them all, a man of blameless piety, scrupulous, even ultra-scrupulous in every slightest duty, perfect, upright and devout. ·Jehovah Himself testifies to his unswerving integrity, unique among the sons of men, but the Satan chal lenges this statement in the midst of the heavenly court. Job is but a time-server. Strip him of his wealth, kill his children, and he will renounce God with the rest. And so the Satan is permitted to deprive Job of everything, possessions, servants, chil dren, but not to touch Job himself. Bedawi raids begin, and lightnings and storm-winds complete the destitution, but Job in his poverty is as devout as Job with his wealth. The heavenly court gathers again, with God still sure of Job's integrity and the Satan still unbelieving. Now the Satan is permitted to smite Job with a loath some 'leprosy' (probably ecthyma), in which the sufferer is covered from head to foot with raw and itching ulcers. Job's wife breaks under the strain, but Job remains steadfastly devout. The last three verses of ii tell of the visit of Job's three friends, who hear of his misfortunes and come to comfort him. -

Publishing one issue each semester, Wide Angle serves as a conduit for the expression and critique of that imagination. A joint publication between English majors and faculty, the journal embodies the interdisciplinary nature of the Department of English at Samford University. It provides a venue for undergraduate research, an opportunity for English majors to gain experience in the business of editing and publishing, and a forum for all students, faculty, and staff to publish their best work.
